Chapter 2

Author: Soda
My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. Forcing myself to sound steady, I called out, "I... I just went to bed, Matteo. Is something wrong?"

A beat of silence hit the hallway.

"I heard noise in your room." His tone stayed dead cold, pure authority. "Get some rest if you're fine."

His footsteps slowly faded away.

Losing all strength, I slid down the door and collapsed onto the floor. I gasped for air, my palms dripping with cold sweat.

How is this even possible?

If the floating texts were right, Matteo in real life was the ruthless mob boss controlling the whole underworld. And me? I was just a plain finance worker in thick glasses and conservative suits. We had lived together in this mansion for three months, and he always looked at me like I was invisible.

But on that encrypted app just now...

The glowing texts exploded in mid-air once again:

[Babe! Stop doubting it! He IS 'Shadow'! What kind of magic potion did you give him over the last six months?!]

[That bitch Sienna is using you as a pawn! Don't let her get you killed by a mafia don! RUN while you still can!]

The texts jolted my memory.

Sienna, the spoiled daughter of a loan shark, started all of this.

Six months ago, Sienna slammed a thirty-thousand-dollar check in front of my face.

"Get this man for me in three months," she said, chewing her gum with contempt. "You'll get another forty grand when it's done."

I desperately needed money for my mother's medical bills back then. Sienna, with her explosive temper, was already blocked on all his socials.

She handed me a brand-new encrypted account. The profile picture showed her back in a backless dress at a Miami bar. The screen name was "Siren."

And the target had only one code name—"Shadow."

"He likes hot, bold women, but he's extremely picky," Sienna pointed at the screen. "Use your copywriting skills. Play me, and seduce him."

For that seventy thousand dollars, I threw away my good-girl persona and transformed into the intoxicating "Siren."

I chased him for four whole months. Every day, I studied how he talked, testing him with flirty yet teasing texts.

Until two months ago, he finally texted, "Let's date."

At that moment, I thought my job was done.

"Sienna, here's your account back. He agreed to date you," I found Sienna.

But Sienna shoved the phone back at me, totally impatient. "I'm going on a two-month cruise next week! Keep chatting for me. I'll meet him when I get back! You'll get your final pay!"

Those extra two months threw everything completely off track.

"Shadow," rumored to be a cold, bloodthirsty man, turned insanely clingy and possessive after we made it official.

Once, I casually texted, "Your voice is so hot. I want to hear you sing." The very next day, he sent his first private voice note.

That deep, raspy, breathless voice struck my nerves instantly.

I felt a secret thrill for him. I thought I was falling for a sexy, mysterious guy online, but reality just slapped me hard in the face—

He was Matteo.

The cold-blooded mafia don who climbed to the top on a pile of bodies!

Ding-dong.

The phone in my hand vibrated again. A new message popped up on the encrypted app:

Shadow: [Baby, the cold shower didn't cool me down.]

Shadow: [Did you hang up on me because you're tired of me?]

Looking at those two lines, my hands trembled uncontrollably.

My heart pounded like crazy.

How could a powerful mafia don act like a needy, desperate lover through my earbuds?

"Dumbass."Inside the closet, Matteo leaned close to my ear, his raspy voice dripping with lethal coldness.A chill ran down my spine. I gasped, accidentally bumping my forehead hard against his chest. The footsteps outside stopped dead in their tracks."Who's there?!" Sienna's sharp voice shot up an octave.I held my breath, every single nerve pulled taut.Matteo's large hand instantly slammed over the back of my head, holding me still.Dead silence outside.Sienna paused, pacing around with heavy suspicion. The closet sat in a complete blind spot behind a curtain, so she couldn't see us.A moment later, her footsteps faded away completely. The coast was clear.I looked up from his chest into his dark, deep eyes, finally asking the question that had been burning inside me: "Sienna said you two crossed the line two months ago. The red marks on her neck were proof."The moment he heard those words, the coldness in his eyes vanished. Sheer panic took over. His long fingers gripped my sho

Inside a five-star hotel suite in London, I had just put on a simple black evening dress I bought myself when the door flew open.Matteo stood at the doorway, his face expressionless. Two bodyguards stood behind him, holding an insanely luxurious garment box.He didn't say a word, but I already knew what he meant.I put down my speech notes, raising an eyebrow at him. "Knock first, Don Matteo. Basic manners.""Do we really need to be that polite with each other?" Matteo raised a hand, signaling his bodyguards to set the box down. The lid opened, revealing a dark, custom-tailored evening gown. Sharp cuts, rich fabric—it matched his suit perfectly."Custom-made for you months ago." Matteo's gaze was burning, intense, and possessive. His voice dropped low. "You are representing all of America as the main speaker tonight. Don't embarrass me."My cheeks flushed. Represent him? Since when are we a thing? The floating text was already losing its mind, flashing crazy comments to egg us on. I t

"Nora, you're fired! Pack your shit and get the hell out!"Just as I expected, Victor's petty act of revenge landed on my desk two days later. No real reason, no severance pay. According to him, not suing me for the company's loss was him being generous. This was purely his revenge after getting humiliated by Matteo.I looked at the termination letter without a trace of anger or begging."I hope you don't regret this decision, Mr. Vance," I said with a cold laugh.I tossed my work ID onto the desk, packed my things, and walked out of that toxic finance firm without looking back.Losing my job wasn't the end of the world. It felt like freedom.I completely abandoned the idea of applying for another low-level clerk job.I had only one goal now: the national elite financial executive exam in two months. If I made it into the top three nationwide, I'd get the golden ticket to the Global Capital Summit in London!Late at night, after finishing the last set of risk models, I collapsed onto t

I never expected to see Matteo again. That day, I was working my usual rotation at the bank counter. A long, calloused hand rested on the glass, holding an unlimited black card and a sleek ID. I looked up. Matteo was standing right on the other side. His piercing blue eyes locked onto me like a predator pinning down its prey."I need to make a transaction." His voice was low, heavy, and completely stripped of warmth.I pushed down the storm in my chest, took the card, and pulled up his records in the system. The next second, the sheer volume of his assets and cash reserves popped up on my screen. My breath hitched. In that instant, the cold, brutal reality of our two different worlds hit me hard. He was the undisputed king controlling the entire underground financial world. I was just a low-level worker living on a monthly paycheck."Done staring?"Matteo leaned forward suddenly, his breath brushing against my ear. His familiar, cold cedar scent instantly wrapped around me.His eyes we

The next afternoon at 3:00 PM, Sienna stomped into the finance office in her four-inch red heels. She was late. She reeked of expensive designer perfume, but it couldn't hide the heavy stench of last night's hangover. She slammed her limited-edition Hermès bag onto my desk and stared down at me. She didn't say a word. The silence was creepy.I didn't even look up. My fingers flew across the keyboard. "Miss Vance, please don't interrupt my work.""Stop acting so high and mighty," Sienna sneered. She pulled down the neckline of her low-cut dress, exposing her collarbone right in front of my face.It was covered in bright red hickeys and dark bruises. The second my eyes swept over her neck, Sienna's pride exploded. She leaned in close, her voice dripping with nasty malice and cheap bragging."See this? Last night in the Peninsula penthouse, Matteo went wild!"She giggled, her eyes burning with trashy greed. "He pinned me to the couch, then the rug, over and over. That Don intensity? He al

"Break the lease? What the hell are you talking about?!"Sienna's piercing screech exploded from my phone the second I walked into the motel bathroom. My eardrums throbbed."Nora! The elite financial executive seminar starts tonight! Only twenty spots nationwide!" Her heavy breathing rasped through the speaker. She was losing her mind. "I dropped two hundred grand just to get in! I'm giving you the privilege to sit in and take attendance for me. You should be thanking me!Now you tell me you're moving and can't take attendance for me?!"I pulled the phone away, grabbed a paper towel, and kept my voice ice-cold. "Miss Vance, our contract only covers texting. Taking your class costs extra. Besides, aren't you supposed to meet your ‘Shadow' at the Peninsula penthouse tonight at eight?"The line went dead silent for half a second. Then came her smug, nasty laugh. "Smart girl. That's right, I've got way bigger fish to fry! Screw that stupid class. Let them kick me out!"Little did she know,
