Chapter 2

Author: ChimeZ
Before I left, I planned to clear my personal things out of the office and give them back their stuff.

I found Nash outside Faye's private office.

He was installing the biometric lock on her door himself. An unopened air purifier and a few expensive velvet throw pillows sat nearby.

"A little lower." Faye gestured. "When I'm in flats, I might not be able to reach the retinal scanner."

Nash didn't hesitate. He pulled the panel off and rewired it.

When he heard footsteps, he glanced back at me. "What are you doing here?"

I held out a worn multitool knife. Years ago, when we'd had to escape a protest that turned ugly, he'd given it to me for protection.

"Here. This is yours."

Nash looked startled.

"Just keep it. Why are you giving it to me?"

"In case I don't get another chance to give it back."

He missed what I meant. He just tossed the knife into a cardboard box full of junk.

"Good timing. We haven't moved Faye's couch into her office yet. You're strong. Come give me a hand."

I didn't move.

Faye waved her hands quickly. "No, it's okay. Cora's going to Dayaka. She must be busy handing off her work and packing."

Nash snorted and went back to his wiring.

"A workaholic like her? She can pack a carry-on in ten minutes. What's keeping her so busy?"

I turned and left.

The whole time, he never once asked what day I was leaving.

Grant was in his office, going through case files.

I set the original crisis playbooks we'd stayed up all night drafting together on his desk.

He took them, then seemed to remember something.

"Leave your camera and memory cards too." Grant filed the case folder away. "At the industry gala next week, Faye wants to show a documentary about how the company grew. She needs the old footage."

I'd bought that camera with my first bonus. It held almost everything from those early years: the five of us struggling in the garage and every celebration after a win.

"That's my personal property."

"We're just borrowing it to pull a few photos. It's not like we're keeping it."

He nodded toward the door. Faye walked in and looked at me eagerly.

"Cora, I just want to pick a few pictures from when everyone was starting out, so clients feel like we're a complete team with real history."

"But you weren't there when we were starting out."

Faye went white.

Grant frowned and shot me an accusing look.

"Was that necessary? She just wishes she could've joined us sooner."

"So you take my past to make up for what she missed?"

Grant seemed to run out of patience. He reached out to snatch the office key card from my hand.

"It's just for a few days, for the company's image. Don't make such a big deal out of it. After the gala, I'll have Jared give it back to you."

I looked at him for two seconds, then let go.

"Fine."

There was nothing on that camera I couldn't live without. I'd backed up everything that mattered to my own hard drive long ago.

I'd barely made it to the door when Ray stopped me in the hallway.

He tossed an encrypted external hard drive into my arms.

"Perfect timing. This has the company's core surveillance footage and reviews of our PR campaigns from the last few years. Put together an impressive résumé for Faye."

"She wasn't part of any of that crisis work."

"That's why she needs your files." Ray sounded impatient, as if it were obvious. "Cut out the footage where you appear, change your name to Faye's on the campaign reviews, and add a few photos of her working. For you, that's one night's work."

I looked down at the hard drive in my hand.

It held footage from the night we landed our first eight-figure deal, along with countless moments of us hugging and cheering after we'd solved a tough case.

Now they wanted me to erase myself from that history with my own hands, so Faye could take my place and claim a flawless "core partner" résumé.

"Okay."

My knuckles went white, but I put the hard drive in my pocket.

That caught Ray off guard.

"You're agreeing that easily?"

"Didn't you say I'd get over my tantrum in a few days?"

He rubbed his nose and relaxed.

"As long as you've come around. Big picture first."

That night, Jared kept his promise and took me to dinner.

Once the steaks came out, he kept his head down, typing on his phone.

Faye complained in the group chat that the security system at her new apartment was too complicated, and he immediately called the building manager to have it replaced.

Then Faye said she was worried she couldn't handle the press at next week's gala, and he sent her one voice message after another, patiently coaching her.

My steak went cold, the fat congealing into a white crust, and he never looked up once.

"Jared."

"Hm?"

"Do you remember what I'm doing tomorrow?"

His thumbs stopped, and he finally looked up.

"Going into the office to hand over your files?"

"Something like that."

He looked relieved and clinked his wine glass against mine.

"Don't look so serious all the time. Do a good job in Dayaka. I promised you I'd come see you."

Outside the restaurant, he leaned down and gave me a quick, careless kiss on the forehead.

"When the time comes, the four of us will all come to Dayaka to see you."

I didn't call him on the lie.

Back at my apartment, I plugged the hard drive into my computer.

I did cut every shot that showed my face.

Then I logged into the company network and used my own access to revoke the licenses on every analysis model and risk-modeling engine I'd built myself.

Those models had cost me countless days and nights. Faye wasn't getting them handed to her.

I unplugged the hard drive and dropped it into a manila shipping envelope.

This was my last parting gift to them.

A paper empire, all show and no substance without me.

The night the summit ended, I turned down every dinner invitation and drove alone to Professor Vance's apartment uptown. He cooked me a warm, homemade meal himself."Are you planning to stay in Nova City this time?" He handed me a glass of red wine he'd let breathe.I shook my head."Next week I'm flying to Senar City. The Alliance has a new international coordination project there.""Another five years?""Maybe longer."He paused, still holding his glass. Then he smiled, pleased."Go on, kid. That's the stage you belong on."A cool wind blew as I said goodbye to the professor.I'd just walked out of his building when I saw Jared's car parked in the shadows by the curb.He got out but didn't rush over. He stopped a few steps away, keeping a polite distance."Faye left the industry two years ago. She couldn't take the pressure of front-line PR."Jared spoke quickly, as if he were desperate to explain himself."The four of us cut her off a long time ago. Cora, we really do know we were w

Cora's POV:In the fifth year, the situation in Dayaka finally stabilized.I was 35 that year.I'd risen from a newly arrived envoy to the International Relief Alliance's Chief Crisis Officer. The Dayaka Multilateral Mediation Model I'd developed had even been adopted as a textbook case study in global public crisis intervention. At the end of that year, Alliance headquarters arranged for me to fly back to Nova City as a special representative to the Global Public Relations Summit, where I'd give the opening keynote. When my flight landed at Nova City International Airport, I finally regained access to my personal communication devices after five years. The moment my screen came on, my old voicemails and work emails flooded in.Jared alone had sent hundreds of emails. The early ones were condescending demands and orders. Then came anxious questions, and finally, apologies. The most recent one was timestamped three months earlier."Cora, I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just hope you

Cora's POV:Dayaka was 100 times harsher than any power struggle across a conference table in Nova City.In my first week at the crisis intervention center, I rode with a relief convoy to the edge of the fighting. The air was always thick with gunsmoke and scorching dust.Harlan, the center's director, handed me a heavy bulletproof vest."Regretting signing that five-year agreement yet?"I fastened the buckles and shook my head."Quite the opposite. I've never been more certain of a decision in my career."Harlan smiled."Conditions here are brutal. You don't miss the good life in Nova City at all? Or your friends back there?"I adjusted my helmet strap, my face calm."All I've got in Nova City are old clients and former coworkers. No friends."Harlan didn't ask any more.Three months into the project, the Humanitarian Corridor Multilateral Negotiation Plan I'd led the effort to draft proved crucial when fighting suddenly broke out. Both sides agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire, allowing hu

The next day, word spread throughout Nova City's PR industry that Cora had started her classified mission as an envoy ahead of schedule.International Relief Alliance headquarters issued an official announcement. Cora had ranked first in the overall evaluation and been chosen for a special program at the Dayaka Crisis Intervention Center. That deployment agreement had never been an ordinary business contract. It was an offer to join an elite program, and Cora was the only person in Nova City who'd made it.The employees who'd cornered and mocked her in the lounge two days earlier went pale when they saw the announcement.Outside the break room, Brianna, Faye's newly promoted assistant, was still trying to explain herself to Jared."Mr. Blake, we were just joking around with Cora that day. Who knew she was so petty she'd actually leave?"Jared stopped and looked at her coldly."That cup of scalding black coffee two days ago. Did you knock it over?"Brianna's smile froze. "I swear, my ha

Early the next morning, Jared drove the other three to the International Relief Alliance's Nova City branch. The person who came out to meet them was Professor Vance, Cora's old mentor.Jared pressed him with question after question, but the professor only answered with a calm question of his own."May I ask in what capacity you're inquiring about the whereabouts of an envoy on a classified mission?"Jared's voice was low. "I'm her fiancé. All four of us are her partners."The professor pulled up a document and turned the monitor toward them."I'm sorry, but in the file Envoy Hayes submitted, none of your names are listed as emergency contacts or beneficiaries."Jared's hand tightened on the edge of the desk."Professor, we just had a small misunderstanding. She's only doing this out of spite. Please, make an exception. We just need a few minutes on the phone with her.""I'm sorry. The Alliance has strict security rules."Nash grew agitated. He planted both hands on the desk and tried

The military plane roared down the runway and took off.Following protocol, Reyes took my anti-tracking pouch."From now on, your Alliance code name is 'Envoy C.'"Your old job, your relationships, your communication records. They all get sealed up with this pouch."I looked out the window at the thick darkness and nodded."Understood."For the whole 13-hour flight, I was calmer than I'd ever been.I didn't have to watch for red alerts in the media monitoring system, clean up after someone who'd angered the press, or tiptoe around Faye's fragile ego.It felt a little strange, but it cleared my head....Third-person POV:At that same moment in Nova City, Faye's senior partner party was in full swing.Nash had just had the staff adjust the warm lights over the flower wall.
