Chapter 4

Author: ChimeZ
Late that night, an all-black armored SUV pulled up outside my building.

Professor Elliot Vance, the crisis management mentor who'd brought me into the field, video-called me one last time.

He looked at the black car behind me, his voice heavy.

"Cora, are you really going alone? A place like Dayaka will eat you alive."

"That's the fight I want."

On the screen, the professor sighed.

"If you run into anything you can't handle, call me. You're the student I'm proudest of. Don't throw your life away for someone else's future."

My eyes stung.

In a place like Nova City, where profit came first, at least there was still someone who actually cared whether I lived or died.

As for Jared and the others...

After they left my apartment, they went to the club we used to go to all the time, to get ready for Faye's senior partner welcome party.

The unread count in the group chat I'd muted kept climbing.

Nash posted a picture of a flower wall.

"Cora, you've got the best taste. Get over here and fix this. The colors are a mess."

Grant replied underneath, cold as ever.

"She's still throwing a fit. Don't spoil her."

Ray posted a picture of a custom cake with five little figures on it.

"Give her a few days of eating sand in Dayaka, and she'll fall in line. Then we'll set up a livestream for her."

I ignored them.

Reyes opened the car door for me.

"Cora, once you're in the car, the highest-level radio silence protocol kicks in. You'll lose access to your personal phone and social media accounts. Is there anyone else you need to contact?"

"No."

I got in the car.

A notification popped up at the top of my screen.

Faye had changed the group name from "The Founding Five" to "Nova City Core Team."

Right after that, she sent a screenshot.

My nickname in the group had always been "The Irreplaceable Brain," which Jared had picked himself. Now it had been changed to "Exiled to Dayaka."

Faye added a giggling emoji.

"I was just trying to lighten the mood. Cora won't be mad, will she?"

Nash replied right away.

"If she's mad, she can walk back from Dayaka and change it herself."

Ray posted a string of laughing emojis.

Grant didn't say anything, but he liked Faye's message.

Jared replied last.

"Suits her."

I watched the whole circus and felt nothing.

They had no idea.

In a moment, I wouldn't even be their so-called Dayaka exile.

I opened the settings and left the group.

Then I deleted all four of them from my contacts, one by one.

My finger was hovering over Jared's name when a private message from him came in.

"Stop this.

"Come to Faye's party later, and bring that hard drive with you."

An order, like always.

Even now, he still thought I'd come running whenever he called.

I didn't reply. I just hit delete.

Reyes handed me a metal pouch that blocked tracking signals.

"Turn it off and put it in here. For five years, you can't contact anyone on the outside without authorization, and nobody on the outside can track you."

I held down the power button.

The second the screen went dark, ten years of ties to Nova City were cut clean.

The black SUV eased into the night traffic.

Outside the window, the familiar bright city streets slid away behind us.

We were about to pull up to the checkpoint for the high-security airfield when my hand brushed something cold and hard in my trench coat pocket.

It was my metal badge, the one I'd tossed to Faye that day. Its shine had faded over the years.

She must not have wanted it with my name engraved on it, so she'd slipped it back into my coat pocket when nobody was looking.

We'd grown up together and spent ten years building something from nothing, side by side. In the end, there wasn't even a goodbye.

The security gate slowly lifted.

Reyes looked at me.

"Once you're through this gate, there's no turning back."

I rolled down the window.

The cold night air rushed in and swept away the stuffiness.

I opened my hand and took one last look at the metal badge with the company emblem on it.

I flicked my wrist.

The badge hit the concrete barrier beside the checkpoint with a clang, then bounced into a dark recess at the edge of a storm drain grate.

The car didn't slow down.

It carried me toward the waiting military plane, bound for a battlefield halfway around the world.

And I didn't look back once.

The night the summit ended, I turned down every dinner invitation and drove alone to Professor Vance's apartment uptown. He cooked me a warm, homemade meal himself."Are you planning to stay in Nova City this time?" He handed me a glass of red wine he'd let breathe.I shook my head."Next week I'm flying to Senar City. The Alliance has a new international coordination project there.""Another five years?""Maybe longer."He paused, still holding his glass. Then he smiled, pleased."Go on, kid. That's the stage you belong on."A cool wind blew as I said goodbye to the professor.I'd just walked out of his building when I saw Jared's car parked in the shadows by the curb.He got out but didn't rush over. He stopped a few steps away, keeping a polite distance."Faye left the industry two years ago. She couldn't take the pressure of front-line PR."Jared spoke quickly, as if he were desperate to explain himself."The four of us cut her off a long time ago. Cora, we really do know we were w

Cora's POV:In the fifth year, the situation in Dayaka finally stabilized.I was 35 that year.I'd risen from a newly arrived envoy to the International Relief Alliance's Chief Crisis Officer. The Dayaka Multilateral Mediation Model I'd developed had even been adopted as a textbook case study in global public crisis intervention. At the end of that year, Alliance headquarters arranged for me to fly back to Nova City as a special representative to the Global Public Relations Summit, where I'd give the opening keynote. When my flight landed at Nova City International Airport, I finally regained access to my personal communication devices after five years. The moment my screen came on, my old voicemails and work emails flooded in.Jared alone had sent hundreds of emails. The early ones were condescending demands and orders. Then came anxious questions, and finally, apologies. The most recent one was timestamped three months earlier."Cora, I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just hope you

Cora's POV:Dayaka was 100 times harsher than any power struggle across a conference table in Nova City.In my first week at the crisis intervention center, I rode with a relief convoy to the edge of the fighting. The air was always thick with gunsmoke and scorching dust.Harlan, the center's director, handed me a heavy bulletproof vest."Regretting signing that five-year agreement yet?"I fastened the buckles and shook my head."Quite the opposite. I've never been more certain of a decision in my career."Harlan smiled."Conditions here are brutal. You don't miss the good life in Nova City at all? Or your friends back there?"I adjusted my helmet strap, my face calm."All I've got in Nova City are old clients and former coworkers. No friends."Harlan didn't ask any more.Three months into the project, the Humanitarian Corridor Multilateral Negotiation Plan I'd led the effort to draft proved crucial when fighting suddenly broke out. Both sides agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire, allowing hu

The next day, word spread throughout Nova City's PR industry that Cora had started her classified mission as an envoy ahead of schedule.International Relief Alliance headquarters issued an official announcement. Cora had ranked first in the overall evaluation and been chosen for a special program at the Dayaka Crisis Intervention Center. That deployment agreement had never been an ordinary business contract. It was an offer to join an elite program, and Cora was the only person in Nova City who'd made it.The employees who'd cornered and mocked her in the lounge two days earlier went pale when they saw the announcement.Outside the break room, Brianna, Faye's newly promoted assistant, was still trying to explain herself to Jared."Mr. Blake, we were just joking around with Cora that day. Who knew she was so petty she'd actually leave?"Jared stopped and looked at her coldly."That cup of scalding black coffee two days ago. Did you knock it over?"Brianna's smile froze. "I swear, my ha

Early the next morning, Jared drove the other three to the International Relief Alliance's Nova City branch. The person who came out to meet them was Professor Vance, Cora's old mentor.Jared pressed him with question after question, but the professor only answered with a calm question of his own."May I ask in what capacity you're inquiring about the whereabouts of an envoy on a classified mission?"Jared's voice was low. "I'm her fiancé. All four of us are her partners."The professor pulled up a document and turned the monitor toward them."I'm sorry, but in the file Envoy Hayes submitted, none of your names are listed as emergency contacts or beneficiaries."Jared's hand tightened on the edge of the desk."Professor, we just had a small misunderstanding. She's only doing this out of spite. Please, make an exception. We just need a few minutes on the phone with her.""I'm sorry. The Alliance has strict security rules."Nash grew agitated. He planted both hands on the desk and tried

The military plane roared down the runway and took off.Following protocol, Reyes took my anti-tracking pouch."From now on, your Alliance code name is 'Envoy C.'"Your old job, your relationships, your communication records. They all get sealed up with this pouch."I looked out the window at the thick darkness and nodded."Understood."For the whole 13-hour flight, I was calmer than I'd ever been.I didn't have to watch for red alerts in the media monitoring system, clean up after someone who'd angered the press, or tiptoe around Faye's fragile ego.It felt a little strange, but it cleared my head....Third-person POV:At that same moment in Nova City, Faye's senior partner party was in full swing.Nash had just had the staff adjust the warm lights over the flower wall. Grant was setting up the projector, and Ray was cutting into the custom fondant cake with five little figures on top.Jared glanced at his watch.10:15 p.m.Cora still hadn't shown up.He called her, but an automated
