Chapter 4

Author: Heart
I'd just gotten home when I noticed that the profile icons in the group chat on my commstone had suddenly changed.

All four of them had switched to different pieces of the same totem image.

Kyle had the top left corner. Jack had the top right.

David and Ella took the bottom left and bottom right, and together they made one complete picture.

I stared at it for a few seconds, then opened the member list.

There were five icons in all.

But no matter how you arranged them, my plain snowfield icon was the odd one out.

Ella posted in the chat.

"These icons are sooo cute together!"

Jack replied with a head-pat emoji.

"Of course they look good. You picked them."

For once, even David chimed in.

"Really meaningful."

Kyle tagged me.

"Don't overthink it. The totem only has four corners. Worst case, I'll let you use mine for a few days next time."

I hadn't said a word, and he'd already decided how I was supposed to feel.

I closed the chat without replying.

Around noon the next day, Jack sent a location pin for a barbecue place.

"Seven tonight. Dinner in the cave. Don't be late."

Below it was the set menu he'd ordered.

A meal for four.

Two meat dishes, two vegetable sides, one bottle of red wine, four glasses.

I messaged him back.

"For four?"

It took Jack a long time to get what I meant.

"Ella's been wanting to try this place forever. The meal for four is a better deal."

"We'll add more meat when you get here. You never eat much anyway, and when you do, you always say your stomach hurts."

I looked at that line, "We'll add more meat when you get here," and suddenly it all seemed ridiculous.

They always said I was the person who mattered most to them.

But now they couldn't even remember to save me a seat when they placed the order.

Every time, they'd only scoot over and add another place setting once I showed up.

As if making room for me at the last minute made up for forgetting me in the first place.

That afternoon, I packed the last of my things into my suitcase.

A few things were still sitting on the table.

The comb Jack had given me when we were kids.

The shifting chart David had drawn for me.

The combat medal Kyle had won in his first real fight.

And the lopsided little straw wolf he'd given me the day we met.

I didn't throw them out.

I just left them behind.

Taking them with me would mean I still couldn't let go.

When you truly stop caring, you can't even be bothered to get rid of things.

Ten minutes before I had to leave, Kyle messaged again. This time it was a photo of four concert tickets.

The Summit Concert, live on a moonlit night.

"Ella spent forever trying to snag these."

"Exactly four. We're taking her this weekend."

"You don't like crowds, so we'll record it for you. Saves you money too."

I'd lost count of how many times they'd said "you don't like" something as an excuse to leave me out.

The thing was, Kyle and I had been listening to that band together for three years.

Last year, when we couldn't get tickets, he'd hugged me and promised that next time, he'd take me to see them live.

So the promise hadn't disappeared.

He'd just kept it for someone else.

I carried my bags out of my place and left the door code written on the wall.

No goodbye letter.

No long list of everything they'd done to me, either.

They wouldn't even read it.

Even if they did, they'd just think I was making a scene over nothing.

Messages kept popping up on my commstone. Jack wanted me to get to the barbecue place early and save a table. David wanted me to stop on the way and pick up a bag of the roasted honey fruit Ella liked.

The last message was from Kyle.

"Be good tonight. No attitude. I'll make it up to you later."

"After the concert, we'll bring you back the kind of souvenir you like best."

I didn't reply.

Once I was on the transport, I left the group chat the five of us shared. I hit confirm. That was it.

I'd taken a seat by the window.

My commstone buzzed again.

Kyle had sent me a voice message.

He sounded exasperated, the way he always did with me. "Sasha, why aren't you here yet?"

"Reply when you get this. Are you going to make us all wait for you again?"

As the transport started moving, Kyle sent another message.

"Be there before dark. We won't wait if you're late, so don't come crying."

I glanced out the window.

The place I'd always called home slowly blurred out of sight.

I turned off my commstone.

Tonight they'd probably still make room for me.

But I'd never sit in that last-minute extra seat again.

  • My Friends Dumped Me in the North, I Became the Alpha   Chapter 10

The day before I left, the Elders held a feast to honor me as one of the North's finest wolves. After the feast, Tobias, my old mentor, pulled me aside and asked me to sit with him for a while. He clapped me hard on the shoulder. I could see how moved he was."Will you ever come back to live in the South for good?"I shook my head. "There's so much to rebuild on the Northern border. We still have vast stretches of territory to defend and bring under control.""So you'll be there for years?""Maybe the rest of my life."Tobias's hand stilled around his bone cup. He was silent for a moment."Then go where your heart takes you.""The pack is your home. Whenever you want to come back, I'll be waiting."Something warm stirred in my chest, and I nodded my thanks. Before I left, I went alone to the place where I used to live. The house looked just the way it had back then, and the wolfthorn tree in the yard was still thick with leaves. The ground beneath the tree was level. The hole where we'

Three years of training passed in a blur. Then it was over.I became the youngest Alpha the training camp had ever produced. On the honor stone out on the Northern snowfields, they carved my number, 713, and beside it, my name: Sasha.I brought peace to the border and rewrote the rules for guarding it. I earned one victory after another, with every pack watching. My old pack in the South sent an official letter inviting me home to share my story at its grand ceremony. When I finally turned my commstone back on after all that time, messages flooded in.Kyle alone had sent thousands. The first still sounded like the old, stubborn Kyle. "Sasha, stop sulking."The latest one had lost all its edge. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just want to know you're okay."After every tactics match, Jack had sent me a report on how it went.Every time David had made a breakthrough in his mind-power training, he'd left me a line or two.Little by little, they'd shared the past three years of their

Life at the training camp in the North was far more grueling than I'd expected. In my very first month, I was thrown into intense combat training.A wolf on my squad tossed me a piece of custom protective gear."Any regrets about coming here?"I shook my head."No regrets.""Will you miss your pack down South?"I paused."I'll miss the warm winds down South. And my parents.""Anything else?""Nothing else."My squadmate saw how calm I was and didn't push any further.By the third month, I'd reached my full strength as a wolf. I placed third in the camp's simulated encirclement exercise.Late that night, cheers kept ringing out from the black-stone towers above the training grounds.Maren came over with a big jar of aged Northern fruit wine in her arms."We don't have much here.""But we've got wine to celebrate with."I took a sip. It was sharp and bitter, but it put me far more at ease than the red wine at the bonfire on my coming-of-age night ever had.Six months into training, the c

News that Sasha had gotten into the training camp spread fast through the Southern pack.It was the place every young wolf in the pack dreamed of. Everyone knew how hard it was to get a spot there. Now, finally, they understood. Sasha wasn't some fool who'd been dumped in the North. She was a fighter who'd earned her place at the camp.Plenty of wolves had seen those girls humiliate Sasha in front of everyone at the coming-of-age feast. When the Elders heard what had happened that night, they punished the girls according to pack law. They were sentenced to two months of labor at the quarry on the edge of the North. They came running to Ella in a panic, begging her to put in a word for them. They cried and insisted they'd only been joking over drinks. But Ella's own position was shaky now. Kyle, Jack, and David no longer rushed to stand up for her the way they used to.There was nothing she could do to help.Ever since they'd returned from the North, an invisible wall had stood between

Kyle and the others ignored the pack's ban and followed every lead all the way to the Northern border. But they could only get as far as the border checkpoint. Getting into the training camp itself required a special entry pass.Kyle tried to add Sasha back again and again. Every time, the screen showed him the same thing. "Access denied."He asked every wolf on guard duty, but they all shook their heads. They would only confirm that trainee Number 713 was inside the restricted training grounds. No one outside was allowed to know anything else about a trainee, not even their exact location. Even requests to visit were turned down flat. After days on the road, Kyle's eyes were bloodshot. There was nothing left of his old easy confidence. He waited at the black-stone sentry post outside the camp until, at last, Maren showed up.Maren looked at him, her face perfectly calm."I need to see Sasha. I grew up with her. I'm going to be her mate."Kyle stepped closer, his voice tight. "I have s

Maren, my instructor, was waiting when I arrived. She stepped forward to meet me."Once you set foot in this camp, your old identity gets locked away.""From now on, you're just Number 713 here. You'll have to put your old relationships on hold. No private messages. While you're training here, you're not allowed any contact with the outside world."I nodded. "I understand."The Northern wind whipped fine snow into my face. There were no familiar cave markets or bonfire gatherings, only snowy mountains stretching into the distance and rows of black-stone training towers. No more messages popping up every other minute. No one asking me to stop on the way for honey fruit. No one telling me to be sensible, to be the bigger person, to step aside for someone else. The endless quiet felt strange, but it was such a relief. At that same moment, back at the pack's market in the South, the private room at the barbecue place was all set up.Seven o'clock sharp.Dinner started right on time.Jack s
