Chapter 3

Author: Cocojam
My nose stung.

What about the promise?

The necklace was supposed to be mine.

In that moment, it was like Mom forgot everything.

Forgot her own words. Forgot she had another daughter.

I had nothing.

No designer wedding dress, no garden reception, no clean-cut, respectable husband.

Just moldy trailer park walls and a gambling addict.

And now my necklace was going to Claire, too?

Just like when we were kids, I fought to get it back.

I scrambled to grab it!

But it was no use.

My hand passed right through it, again and again.

I could only watch as Claire put it on.

She spun excitedly in front of the full-length mirror.

I stood there, defeated.

Something hot and stinging slid down my face.

But… why am I crying?

I'm already dead.

That night, before sleeping, Mom seemed to remember something.

She picked up her phone and looked at the fake Paris photo again.

“Chloe, your sister is getting married. You’re all grown up now, too.”

Her finger gently stroked the screen, her voice thick with emotion.

She slowly fell asleep.

I sat on the edge of her bed and reached out to touch her face.

She must have felt a cold draft.

She startled awake and looked around, tear tracks still on her cheeks, then closed her eyes again.

I lay down beside her and closed my eyes, just like when I was a little girl.

The next morning, Mom handed Dad his black coffee and sighed.

“Claire’s wedding is such a happy occasion, but I couldn't sleep a wink last night. I just feel so empty.”

“Do you think we should have Chloe fly back for the wedding?”

“She’s older now. She should be more understanding.”

“And if she finds out you’re alive, she’ll cry with joy.”

“Maybe we should just confess about the fake death. I really miss her so much…”

Before Mom could finish, Claire’s tearful shriek echoed from the hallway.

“I knew it! You’ve always favored Chloe! You knew I loved blueberry pancakes, but you made me share them with her!”

“You knew I loved that pink hair ribbon, but you had to buy her the exact same one!”

“And now you want to turn my perfect wedding into her dramatic family reunion?”

“Who knows what she’ll freak out and try to steal from me this time!”

Claire collapsed onto the carpet, sobbing as if she’d been holding it in for years.

Her crying broke Mom’s heart. Mom rushed over and pulled her into a hug.

“You’re right, sweetie. Mommy wasn’t thinking. Mommy’s wrong.”

“I promise, I won’t mention her again. I won’t let her show up and steal your spotlight.”

Seeing Mom’s promise, Claire’s tears turned to a smile.

Dad quickly brought over her favorite breakfast, Eggs Benedict.

“Have you forgotten how selfish Chloe has always been? How she used to bully Claire?”

“If we hadn’t found a way to send her away, she would have torn this family apart.”

I stood to the side, my eyes on the perfect breakfast.

They called me selfish. Said I bullied Claire.

I loved blueberries just as much as she did.

I loved that pink ribbon, too.

But if I didn't fight for things, I got nothing in that house.

They only saw me crying over the broken doll parts.

They never saw Claire locking me in the dark basement.

Wasn’t the horrific price I paid for that doll enough?

But even after fourteen years, the second Claire shed a tear, everything was my fault.

But it's fine. I'm already dead. In a few days, I'll disappear completely.

No more fighting.

No more fighting for anything.

After breakfast, Dad left for his construction company.

As soon as he entered the lobby, his partner, David, called out to him.

“Hey, there was a scumbag downstairs just now. Reeked of booze, cussing up a storm. He had some old lady with him holding a baby. Kept insisting he was your son-in-law.”

“Said his wife’s father was Arthur, a senior engineer here. You’re the only Arthur here, right?”

She smoothed her hair, straightened her back, and snapped back.“Arthur, have you lost your mind? You’re going to believe some crazy grifters over your own sister?” She raised her voice, trying to drown out the murmurs. “I told you, Chloe is in her studio in Paris, preparing for her final critique!”Arthur’s eyes were wild. He shoved his phone into her hand.“Fine. FaceTime her. Right now. In front of everyone. Let me see her in Paris!”My aunt’s face went pale. The gambler didn’t give my father a chance to speak. He shoved his stinking face right up to his nose.“The check. Now. I don’t care which bank. A cashier’s check. Now.”He pointed a finger at the dirty bundle in Mrs. Miller’s arms. “And you can take the little thing.”He straightened up, sizing up the mansion with a laugh. “All this space. We’ll just move in. Me and my Ma. Dad looked completely baffled, as if he’d just heard the most ridiculous joke.“What kind of crazy talk is that?”“My older daughter is getting married next month. My younger daughter is in Paris, prepping for her entrance interview at a top art school.”“Besides, would my daughter marry some low-life gambling addict?”“Just some nutcase trying to scam for money.”David chuckled and headed back to his office.“That’s what I figured. I had security kick them out.”At noon, Mom brought sandwiches to Dad’s office for lunch. She overheard the receptionists gossiping.“The nerve of some broke people these days. Dragging their whole family here, claiming to be Arthur’s son-in-law. As if Arthur would have a son-in-law like that.”The words hit Mom’s ears. For some reason, a wave of unspeakable panic washed over her.A mother's intuition made her break out in a cold sweat. She tried desperately to push the terrifying thought away.
