Chapter 2

Author: Ferrycraft
Elias' POV

After confirming the time and place for the blind date, I saw Ivy's latest social media post. It was a photo of her with a group of friends, with Matthew standing front and center.

The caption read, "Good friends around me and the person I love most across from me."

Her friends quickly began messaging her in the group chat.

"Way to go, Ivy! Matt finally came back! Let's congratulate these old flames on finally going public!"

"What do you mean by going public? Ivy liking Matt has always been an open secret!"

"What about Elias then? Hasn't he been pursuing Ivy for five years?"

"Pursuing her? That's just called being a simp! Now that Matt's back, why would Ivy waste any time on him?"

"Before Matt even came back, Ivy already had a proposal and ring prepared. Isn't it obvious who she really likes?"

"Wait! I think Elias is in this group! He can read all these messages we're sending…"

The very next second, I was kicked from the group chat.

An indescribable bitterness welled up in my chest.

Back then, I had tried so hard to fit into Ivy's world that I pestered her to add me to the group.

Then, I sent countless messages to the group to liven things up, but Ivy had only frowned. "There's no need to keep sending messages. They don't appreciate that."

After that, hardly anyone spoke in the group anymore. Ivy had told me, "Everyone's busy with their own lives. Who has time to chat?"

So it turned out they did chat—just not in the group that had me in it.

As for the public acknowledgement and proposal I'd been waiting so long for, all Matthew had to do was show up, and Ivy would offer it all up to him on a silver platter.

I sat by the river and replied to some messages before finally heading home.

The moment I stepped out of the elevator, I ran into Ivy, with Matthew following behind her.

When she saw me, Ivy stopped, frowning, her expression cold and guarded. "Elias, what are you doing here?"

I opened my mouth, about to say that I was just coming home, but then, I remembered that Ivy had forbidden me from telling anyone we lived together.

To avoid suspicion, she'd even strictly dictated when I could leave and return home, so even though we lived at the same address, we had never once walked out the door together.

Ivy, as if afraid Matthew might figure something out, spoke first. "Can you stop following me everywhere? I don't want people getting the wrong idea."

I stood there at a loss for words.

Then, my phone screen lit up with a message she'd just sent me.

"Don't come back for now. Matthew just got back and has nowhere to stay, so I'm letting him stay here for the time being. I've had your things packed and sent to our apartment in Greyfield. Move there for now."

When I turned and walked toward the elevator, I heard Matthew ask who I was.

Ivy responded flatly, "He's just a suitor. I can't believe he actually followed me all the way home. Don't worry. You can stay here. I'll have security tighten things up."

Just before the elevator doors closed, I heard Matthew's carefree laughter. "Wow, Ivy. You haven't changed the passcode in five years! It's still the exact date I left the country! Have you really been counting down the days for me to come back just because I told you to wait for me for five years?"

My finger froze over the elevator button.

When I first moved in, I was secretly delighted to learn the passcode. I thought that even though Ivy refused to make our relationship public, she had chosen the date we got together as the passcode to her unit.

I thought it was her silent way of showing me that she cared. I thought she simply wasn't good at expressing her feelings.

But as it turned out, even that tiny bit of happiness had never belonged to me.

My footsteps were heavy as I went to our apartment in Grayfield to move my things out.

Late that night, when Ivy saw I still hadn't replied, she sent me another message.

"Don't overthink this, Eli. Matthew just came back, and I'm only trying my best to help him out as a friend. And about going public with our relationship, just give me a little more time."

I didn't reply and simply removed her from my pinned contacts.

Ivy, you used to like me! Besides, didn't you take my side that day, too?"Matthew reached out to pull Ivy into his arms. "Elias is already married. Stop thinking about him."Matthew was about to say more, but Ivy tore herself out of his arms. Her eyes were red as she yelled, "Matthew! I only let you stay here out of friendship! "Go find somewhere else to live."Seeing how resolute Ivy is, Matthew presses his lips together. He could tell that she wasn't going to listen to any more

Elias' POVThroughout the wedding, Ivy kept looking in my direction. I stood there dressed in a sharp suit.I should have been her partner, the person she would spend her life with, but she had been the one to lose me.Unable to watch anymore, she stumbled out of the wedding venue.Ivy looked at her phone and saw the messages I'd sent her before—funny videos, pictures of stray cats I'd come across, photos of delicious-looking food, and even a heart-shaped cloud I'd spotted in the sky.She scrolled through them with tears streaming down her face.I had clearly cared about her so much before. She didn't understand why I had suddenly decided I didn't want her anymore, or why I wasn't even willing to give her a chance to make things right. Then, she scrolled down and saw that she'd almost never replied to any of those messages. Even when I'd sent her long messages telling her that I was being pressured to settle down, she'd only replied, "Didn't I tell you from the start that we wer

Elias' POVAs it turned out, it was quite the coincidence. That day, I accepted the blind date invitation and went to the rooftop restaurant as promised. It wasn't until I arrived that I realized Elodie was the one sitting across from me.Seeing the shock and confusion on my face, she broke into a smile. "Elias! I knew you wouldn't recognize me! I even posted pictures of myself from when I was a kid on my social media, but you still didn't figure it out!"Only then did I realize that the blind date Aliya had set me up with was Elodie, my neighbor from when I was still a child. She told me she'd been asking around about me for a long time. Then, some time ago, she finally heard news about me and kept pestering our mutual friends to introduce us. But I'd turned her down again and again, and it wasn't until yesterday that we finally added each other as friends on social media. Looking at Elodie, memories of our childhood suddenly came flooding back. We had been neighbors f

Elias' POVMy wife, Elodie Whitmore, stood in front of me, eyeing Ivy with unmistakable wariness."Ms. Bennett, I've seen you at an academic conference before. I know you're Eli's colleague, but Eli and I are getting married today. "So if you're here to celebrate us, you're more than welcome. But if you're not, please leave immediately."With just a single statement, Elodie had reduced my relationship with Ivy to that of ordinary colleagues. When Ivy heard that, her face grew even paler. However, she couldn't find the words to refute it.Besides my family and friends, a few of my former colleagues were also present at the wedding. They had all heard, to some extent, about how Ivy had publicly distanced herself from me at the lab not long ago. Seeing her show up today was stunning enough as it was. Aware of the eyes on her, Ivy stopped in her tracks. She hesitated, unable to bring herself to take another step forward. In the end, she could only watch as Elodie and I proce

Elias' POVRecognizing Ivy's voice, I calmly replied from behind the wheel of the wedding car, "What is it?"Ivy, who was always so composed and level-headed, was now frantic with anxiety. She demanded, "You haven't been back to our apartment in Grayfield this whole time? Where are you, Eli? "Are you really getting married? But I went to Jenna's wedding, and you weren't the groom! Elias Ashford, who exactly are you marrying?""Who I marry has nothing to do with you."Ivy's anger was instantly doused by those words. "Eli, even if you feel wronged because I didn't make our relationship public, you can't treat marriage like a joke and marry someone you met just half a month ago!"As she spoke, her voice began to tremble slightly. "We've been together for five years! Are we really breaking up just because I never made our relationship public?"Listening to her reproachful and admonishing tone, I couldn't help but scoff. "So? Who are you to me? What gives you the right to question m
