Chapter 2

Author: Dusky Clouds
Feeling the secondhand embarrassment, Alicia and Hannah quickly changed the subject to Alicia's and my wedding date.

Hannah cleared her throat and said, "Since you two are doing so well, we won't treat you unfairly. As a gesture of security, I'm giving you a 3% stake in the company. Consider it a little gift from me."

I quickly declined. "No, Mrs. Bennett. That's too much."

But all I could think was that a father-in-law like him would drive me insane. Forget 3%. I wouldn't marry into this family even for 30%.

Besides, my family had its own company. A stake that small didn't really mean much to me.

Mike, however, had sharp ears. The moment he caught the word "stake", he threw another tantrum. "What are you talking about? You're giving my things to this punk? How dare you deceive the Prince!"

He stormed around most of the table and lunged at me. His fist grazed my chin, leaving a burning sting.

Alicia immediately threw herself between us. She had officially hit her limit and raised her voice. "Dad, stop it!"

The words had barely left her mouth when Mike completely lost it. "You're yelling at me? You're actually yelling at me because of this outsider?"

Like a madman, he grabbed the dishes off the table and hurled them our way. A ceramic plate shattered right at my feet, spraying shards against my pant legs.

Hannah stepped in to restrain him, but with a sharp clink, a glass struck her right on the temple.

Blood started trickling down the side of her face, sending a jolt of panic through me.

"This is all your fault! It's your fault for bringing this man home! None of you love me anymore. My life is so miserable!"

Mike gasped for air through his frantic sobbing until suddenly, his eyes rolled back, and he fell straight backward.

It took ages to finally calm him down and get his breathing normally again.

Hannah let out a heavy sigh. "Dante, I'm so sorry you had to see that."

I shook my head quickly. "It's fine, Mrs. Bennett. I-I should probably head out. I'm sorry for the trouble today."

Alicia grabbed my wrist. "Don't go. It's pitch black out, and your place is so far away. Just stay the night."

I looked out the window. It was indeed dark, and getting a cab in this neighborhood was practically impossible.

After hesitating for a moment, I nodded.

Once Hannah helped the exhausted, sleeping Mike back to his bedroom, Alicia and I sat in the living room. The aftermath of dinner was still all over the place.

The silence stretched on for a long time before Alicia finally spoke.

"My dad has been like this for as long as I can remember," she said, looking down and rubbing her fingers together.

"Ever since I was three, I had to learn how to manage his emotions and make sure he wouldn't cry, get angry, or feel left out…"

I frowned. "Since you were three?"

"Yeah."

Alicia looked up at me, completely casual about it. "Isn't that normal? A child is supposed to take care of her father."

The more I listened, the more twisted it felt.

Normal?

What kind of family would force a toddler to manage an adult man's emotions?

This was emotional manipulation and a complete reversal of roles. The adults were treating their child like an emotional crutch.

Seeing the look on Alicia's face, as if this were perfectly normal, I suddenly felt a wave of pity.

She had been brainwashed with this mindset from infancy. She had no idea what a healthy father-daughter relationship actually looked like.

"Listen to me," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "This kind of relationship is toxic. Your dad is supposed to take care of you, not the other way around.

"In a normal, healthy family, the parent looks after the child, and the child shows appreciation. Not this."

Alicia froze. Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out.

We stayed up talking for hours. She told me all about his tantrums, how she had to soothe him, every crying fit, and every time she gave in.

"Mrs. Bennett," I said, nodding to Hannah. "Have a safe flight."Hannah nodded back, then turned her gaze toward Mike.Standing beside her, Mike suddenly reached into his duffel bag and pulled out a small paper bag before holding it out to me."Here…"His voice was barely a whisper. "I-I made them yesterday. You can try them at home."I took the paper bag and opened it up. Inside were a few homemade cookies. They were a little burnt around the edges and unevenly shaped, but I could tell that he had put real effort into making them."You made these?" I asked."Yeah." Mike looked down, rubbing the toe of his shoe against the floor tiles."The therapist said I should find a hobby, so I took up baking. These didn't turn out great. They're a bit burnt. If they taste terrible, you don't have to eat them…"As he spoke, his voice dwindled to a whisper, as though he wanted to disappear into his shell.I picked one up and took a bite. It was a little hard, and he had gone a bit heavy o

I couldn't help but chuckle. "A probationary period? What, do you think you're a new employee on probation?"Alicia laughed along, looking slightly self-conscious. "Well, I'm already sending you my daily updates anyway, and you're reading them, aren't you?"She packed up the takeout bag and stood. The sunlight caught her from behind. "I'll keep sending them, and you keep reading them. Whenever you feel like I've passed the test, you can make it official."I also got to my feet and brushed a few stray crumbs off my pants."Then you'd better do your best," I said.Alicia's eyes instantly lit up.And so, the days rolled on.It wasn't until late September that Connor suddenly let out a loud "Holy crap" next to me and shoved his phone in my face. "Your ex's family made the financial news again."I took the phone. It was an article with the headline, "Porter Group CEO Hannah Porter Announces Retirement; Daughter Alicia Bennett Appointed CEO".The piece mentioned that Hannah had deci

"Anyway… I'm sorry," Mike murmured.I leaned back against the couch cushions, studying the man sitting across from me.He was well into his 40s, yet his posture resembled that of an elementary schooler. Forcing out the apology looked harder for him than being asked to jump off a building.Hannah and Alicia had enabled him to become a man-child."Mr. Bennett." I spoke up.He raised his head to look at me."If you want to head out in the future, just give Alicia a heads-up first. They worry when you run off like this."Mike blinked in surprise, then gave a slow nod.Alicia arrived ten minutes later. When she pushed through the lobby's glass doors, her forehead was beaded with sweat. Seeing Mike and me sitting across from each other in the lounge, she looked visibly relieved. Her tone was laced with exasperation as she walked over. "Dad, at least let someone know when you're leaving the house."Mike stood up and muttered, "I-I didn't mean to. I just wanted to give his things ba

"I'm so, so sorry," Alicia said over the phone. The sound of a car door slamming shut drifted through her side. "I'm on my way right now. Please don't get into a confrontation with him—"I hung up, stood up from my desk, and walked over to the window to look down.Down in the plaza, a man in a white overcoat was climbing out of a cab. He looked up at the office building, gripped a bulging canvas bag, and bolted toward the main entrance.Taking a deep breath, I turned to Connor and said, "I'm heading downstairs. Someone's here to see me.""Who? Your ex's father?""Yeah."Connor bolted upright. "I'm coming with you.""No need," I replied, slipping my phone into my pocket. "I can handle this myself."The moment I stepped out of the elevator into the first-floor lobby, Mike happened to burst through the front doors. When he saw me, he froze in his tracks. He stood there, tightly squeezing the straps of his canvas bag. His lips were pressed into a thin line."What are you doing h

I nodded."But this whole ordeal has made me realize many things," Hannah said. She glanced at Mike, then at Alicia. "I've been making the same mistake for 20 years. I'm only just starting to fix it now, but I hope it's not too late."I didn't comment.Mike sat quietly on the couch. Tears still stained his face, but he didn't cry out loud anymore.I stood up to leave. As I passed by him, he suddenly moved.I instinctively took half a step back, but he merely reached out and gently tugged at the edge of my blazer."Um…" His voice was so quiet that it was almost a whisper. "Please don't blame them… It was all my fault."I looked down at him.He didn't raise his head, but his hand kept a firm grip on my blazer."I won't," I said.I pulled my blazer away and walked out of the office.Alicia followed me out and called after me in the hallway, "Dante."I stopped in my tracks."My dad admitted he was wrong."Her eyes were a little red as she looked at me. "Even though he's stil

I spoke first. "I didn't pursue legal action before because I didn't think it was worth the hassle. But I came here today to make one thing clear."Mike stared at me warily and said, "The leak of your company's trade secrets has absolutely nothing to do with me."I turned the laptop screen toward him. "When Mr. Bennett barged into my apartment to accuse me of stealing files, I told him that those meeting minutes weren't confidential. But this time is different."Mike's face began to flush. His grip on the couch armrest tightened until his knuckles turned bone-white."I didn't steal anything!" he shrieked, his voice piercingly shrill. "I didn't know anything! He was just an online friend. He said he wanted to see how amazing my wife's company was, so I just snapped a few pictures—""That makes you a corporate spy," I cut him off. "That man works for your competitor, and the data you photographed is worth more than ten million dollars."Mike visibly flinched as if my words physical
