At Old Mr. Tanner’s birthday banquet, his widowed daughter-in-law, Evelyn Tanner, grabbed my arm and declared that I was the Tanner family’s true heir. Later, I brought the results of a DNA test to the Tanner estate, ready to prove who I was. But just as I was about to enter, a flood of comments appeared before my eyes. “Three minutes from now, the male lead will reveal his identity, and Old Mr. Tanner will order his men to hack him to pieces!” “Run! How do you think your biological father died? You have no idea how dangerous families like this can be!” “Jenna truly loves you! Why not go home and live a quiet, happy life with her?” I stopped in my tracks. My girlfriend suddenly wrapped her arms around me, her voice trembling. “Chase, let’s leave. Wealthy families are far more complicated than you realize. I just want us to live a simple life together.” In my previous life, I’d believed her. I’d believed those comments too. But on my way out, I was kidnapped and taken to a warehouse. They sliced the fingerprints from all ten of my fingers, scalped me, and ripped out my teeth, roots and all. Then they burned me alive. Before I died, I saw Jenna nestled in the arms of Archie, a cousin the Tanner family had always favored. “Now no one can fight you for the inheritance,” she said smugly. That was when I realized she had orchestrated every one of those comments. I tore her hands away from me. Whatever warmth remained in my eyes vanished. This time, I would take every last thing that rightfully belonged to me.

Chapter 1

When Jenna saw that I wasn’t answering, she assumed I was wavering.

She immediately grabbed my wrist.

“Chase, can we go home? Just the two of us, like before.”

I slowly pulled my hand free.

“No. I’m going inside to prove who I am.”

Her hand froze in midair, and all the color drained from her face.

At the same time, the bloodred comments began flashing wildly before my eyes.

“This male lead is driving me crazy! If he doesn’t listen to Jenna, he won’t survive the night!”

“Why bother trying to claim your place in the family? You’ll regret it when you’re dead!”

The comments seemed utterly ridiculous.

I started toward the Tanner estate.

“Chase!”

Behind me, Jenna dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around my leg.

“Please! Someone could really get killed!”

I looked down at her.

“What do you mean by that?”

She raised her tearful eyes to mine.

“Your mother is already barely tolerated by the Tanners. If you go in there and claim to be one of them, it won’t end well. You might even drag her into it.

“If you won’t think about yourself, at least think about her. Please.”

I stared at her for two full seconds.

In my previous life, she’d worn that same concerned expression while coaxing me, one sentence at a time, to leave the Tanner family behind.

Then she’d personally delivered me to the incinerator.

I yanked my leg free.

“Get up. She’s my mother, and I’m going to make sure she gets justice.”

I turned and strode toward the Tanner estate’s front entrance.

Jenna called after me through her tears.

“Chase! You’ll regret this!”

The comments flooded my vision again, clinging to me like ghosts.

“Jenna’s crying so hard!”

“Jenna is the closest thing to family you have! You think the Tanners will accept you? Dream on!”

“What an ungrateful bastard! You’re throwing away the woman who stood by you through everything!”

I ignored them.

But just as I stepped through the entrance, I glanced back and saw Jenna with her back to me, secretly making a phone call.

I didn’t need to guess who she was calling.

Archie.

I stopped and smiled coldly.

I’d been given another chance at life.

This time, no matter what move they made, I would make sure they lost the entire game.

In the foyer of the Tanner mansion, the butler blocked my path with one arm.

“Stop.”

His gaze turned cold.

“The Tanner family doesn’t welcome outsiders.”

I calmly took out the DNA test results and met his eyes.

“I’m not an outsider.”

His expression changed instantly.

He hurriedly stepped aside.

“Please come in.”

The Tanner family sat on either side of the main hall.

Old Mr. Tanner occupied the seat at the head of the room, one hand resting on his cane. His gaze was dark and unreadable.

The moment I entered, hushed whispers reached my ears.

“Evelyn insists he’s the son she lost twenty years ago.”

“Wasn’t it enough that she brought death to her husband? Now she’s dragged home some random bastard and expects us to accept him?”

“Quiet! You know Old Mr. Tanner hates anyone mentioning that!”

A thin woman standing in the corner trembled slightly.

Her eyes reddened, but she didn’t dare make a sound.

I knew immediately that she was my mother, Evelyn Tanner.

I’d been stolen from her when I was one year old.

Six months later, my father died, leaving her a widow in the Tanner family.

From that moment on, everyone at the Tanner estate had treated her like a curse who had doomed both her husband and son.

Now she stood at the very back of the room.

She wasn’t even allowed a seat.

I fought back tears as our eyes met.

Then the comments exploded across my vision again.

“The male lead’s birth mother is seriously cursed! If it weren’t for her, he never would’ve come here to claim his place and gotten himself killed!”

“She’s treated worse than a servant in the Tanner family! Even if they accept him, he’s still walking straight to his death!”
