Chapter 4 He Left

Author: Donner
Something froze my heart. I didn't need the comments to tell me that Melody was going out to meet her true love and give him that present. The only reason why she didn't want to break up with me just yet was because she needed me to push their relationship further.

We were one semester away from graduation, and most couples always broke up during graduation season. I used to think Melody and I would be the exception to the rule, but we weren't. It didn't matter how sweet our relationship was, as the end was inevitable.

The movers came as arranged. My parents never wanted me to live too far away from home, and my brother did tell me to never decide where my future would be based on my relationship.

When they found out the breakup was on the horizon, they promptly arranged the best and most expensive moving team around and got me a studio apartment near campus.

All my stuff was cleaned out of the apartment in just a single hour. The efficiency amazed me. This place held so many memories, and now it was devoid of anything that had me in it. I couldn't help but linger as something inside me didn't want to say goodbye.

The team thought I was inspecting their work, so they smiled at me and said, "Don't worry, sir. Couples moving out after their breakup is one of our regular jobs. We're pros.

"We've made sure that not a single article of your belongings stays behind, and not a single item belonging to your ex will be coming with you. You'll be completely out of each other's lives from now on. She has no reason to come to you."

I nodded dumbly.

My senior texted me the confirmation letter for the two-month exchange program overseas. I dearly wanted to go, but I tossed that program to the back burner after I started dating Melody.

"I bet he'll say no. There's no way he'll give up the beautiful and talented FMC for an overseas exchange program. It'll kill him!"

"I'd love it if he says no. I want to see how horrible his end is!"

Those comments and my breakup weighed down on my heart like lead, making it hard for me to breathe.

My senior was going through the menu as he placed the form in front of me. "It's a rare opportunity. Miss it, and it's all over. Think about it."

The crowd beside us suddenly swarmed around something. Soon, I saw who they were circling around. It was Melody and Mike. They were in an embrace as the crowd whooped and cheered.

Melody's best friend was giving them a knowing smile, and she looked excited. "I told you Mike and Melody's the real couple. Ronald's just a stopgap measure."

She turned around, saw me, and froze. My eyes went over her head, and I saw Mike smile in my direction. I knew he saw me the second he arched his eyebrow smugly at me. That look right there was a challenge, and I'd lost.

"That's your…" My senior didn't finish the sentence.

I couldn't take it anymore, so I made up an excuse to get away from the scene. Then, I held up the pen and signed my name on the form.

I blocked Melody on every single social platform and made sure she couldn't contact me after I went back to my new place. I worked myself to the bone for the next two days. As a result, my plans for the exchange program took over the empty spot that Melody left behind.

I was already at the airport when Melody contacted me. She was using Christina Clayman's phone. I had a feeling it was her, so I answered.

"Where are you? I'm coming over."

Her voice made my heart sting, and I hated it because I knew I'd break down in public if whatever this was continued for a second longer.

Still, I soldiered on and said, "I saw you hugging another man that day, Melody. I know you've always loved Mike. I won't get in your way. Don't worry. I won't slander your good name. Let's never see each other again."

I hung up, feeling the negativity swirling inside me fade bit by bit.

Now, I could finally face the bright future I had ahead of me.

Melody stared at the empty house and the number she couldn't get through. She fell to the ground and sobbed her heart out. "Why?"

She thought, 'What do you mean I was with another man? What do you mean you don't want us to see each other again?'

She knew I could be short-tempered, but I wasn't the kind who would make big decisions that easily. She knew something wrong must've happened, so she pulled up the house's surveillance footage using her phone.

Christina showed up huffing and puffing as she dragged the hysterical Mike back. "You've done everything you could, Mike. You'd never be screaming here if you still had a chance. I know you hate this, but it is what it is. Give up."Mike crumpled to the ground and sobbed his heart out. He was no longer the gracious man who was reunited with his true love.Melody didn't stop to comfort him. Instead, she held my hand and left. To my surprise, she led me all the way to my new place like she'd known the way there for a while now."So, you cooked those meals Evan brought for me?"She stayed silent for a long while before looking at me. "Yes. And I've been looking into this matter all this time."Mike had surreptitiously installed a hidden camera in our place and rigged my pendant with a microdevice with very advanced tech. That was how I'd been seeing all the comments."Also, you left just like that. Did I ever mean anything to you? Do you not trust me at all?" The usually calm Melody

"The FMC is saying that on purpose! She's jealous, but she's pretending she isn't! She's mad because of that jacket!""Yeah! She even said she hopes that MMC and her best friend will stay together! I feel for her. She must be heartbroken!""Eh, it's equal parts misery and sweet stuff for stories like these. You need some misery for the sweet parts to be sweeter.""I hate the side character even more now! He's standing between FMC and MMC! If only I could get inside the story… God, I'd slap him silly!""Relax. He's going to face something worse…"…It didn't take long for the comments to start predicting my doom. I had been terrified witless in the beginning, but I had grown numb to it all now. These endings were becoming rather banal to me.Just then, someone pulled me into their embrace. The sweet scent of perfume filled the air around me. I turned around and looked at Melody closely. Her face was a mask of cool indifference. There was no teasing or flirtatious back-and-forth a

The meeting came to an end, but my mind was busy piecing together the twisted pieces I had. Perhaps Evan noticed I was preoccupied, so he grabbed me and left. Unfortunately, we were stopped at the entrance.I quickly snapped out of it and realized that Melody was blocking my path. It had been a while since we met. I noticed the plaintive look on her face, and it made my heart clench. I wanted to move past her, but she only sidled closer."You're going out with your true love. So, why are you here? Your boyfriend's right there."Although I was starting to suspect that the comments weren't true, I still wanted to vent my anger, even for a little. She grabbed my hand, and her voice cracked as she spoke. "You've lost weight. I told you to take care of yourself."It had been far too long since I heard her voice, and it nearly made me cry. However, the comments showed up again and ruined the moment."This guy's fearless, isn't he? He's getting involved with FMC again? Only main charact

"Man, this side character is so annoying! FMC is saying hi to someone she knows, but he thinks she's smiling at her?""MMC's here! FMC only has eyes for him! I sincerely hope that the side character's not trying to latch on to FMC and ruin her relationship.""FMC loves the MMC! She just needs an opening! A push! I think the relationship can finally go forward now that the side character's here. God, I hope he pulls his weight!""Oh, right! Come on, side character! Help the couple out!"…Like hell was I going to "pull my weight." The comments were rage-inducing. These people were so unscrupulous. They never once criticized Mike for being a homewrecker back when I was dating Melody.Instead, they called me an obstacle on the path of their beloved MMC finally getting the girl. I looked up again to see Melody and Mike talking. They stood close and looked intimate. Evan had no idea what was going on as he smiled and said, "Melody must really care about you. She came for you, didn't

  • My Girlfriend's True Love   Chapter 6 The Plot Thickens

I made my decision swiftly and decisively. After that, my main concern was that I was so busy that I didn't have time to look for some decent food in this city. Having Amestrian food every day was torture. Eventually, my parents offered to come over to take care of me. I said no.My brother even offered to hire a housekeeper who could make the food I wanted. It was a good idea, but my stomach couldn't wait that long. The next day, Evan came with a perfect feast, at least to me. After all, every single dish he whipped up was my favorite. I was so moved that my words failed me.Evan wanted to say something. "I…"Alas, I wasn't listening to him, not after I finally had a decent spread before my eyes. All I wanted to do was dig in. He got the hint and said nothing else.He dropped by with delicious food that tasted like home for the next few days. It took me a while, but I eventually noticed something fishy. It was hard not to notice that something was off when he kept bringing me

  • My Girlfriend's True Love   Chapter 5 It's His Fate

Amestria was a nice country, and I spent my time there busy with my studies. Frankly, I devoted all my time to studying. I thought that doing so would make me forget about my old life, but I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering to her.Melody.Whenever I had my meals, whenever I slept… All my mind could think about was her. Honestly, she was a great girlfriend. My family spoiled me rotten, so it made me very particular. I never once lowered my standards even when I was dating her. Sometimes, I'd tease her from time to time when I thought she was a little too stiff.I'd remark that her cooking was bland, dry, or whine that I wanted food from an eatery in the next city over. Yet, she would always fulfill my every wish like a loyal little golden retriever.I could still remember how she'd driven to the next city over because of my whining, but she couldn't find the place I wanted. It went on for more than an hour when it started to rain heavily. So, I told her to stop searching
