Chapter 3

Author: Waverly June
Katherine was furious. "That's a lie! You're the one who pushed me first! You did it on purpose!"

"Then let's check the security footage." I calmly pointed at the camera above us. "There are cameras all over the office, Katherine. You can't just go around making accusations without proof."

Katherine looked momentarily flustered but quickly shot back, "That doesn't change the fact that you pushed me!"

"Because you tried to grab my phone. It's my personal property, and I only pushed you away in self-defense. I had every right to do that."

Frank's expression darkened. "Enough! Both of you, stop arguing. Since neither of you can agree on what happened, we'll call the police and let them sort it out."

The moment Katherine heard the mention of police, her expression changed. She quickly waved her hands. "Forget it! I'll just chalk it up to bad luck. It's like getting bitten by a dog. I'll let it go."

I immediately cut in. "Well, I got bitten by a dog, too, and I'm not letting it slide. I'm calling the police. That dog needs to be dealt with."

Katherine knew exactly what I meant. Trembling with anger, she pointed a finger in my face. "Who are you calling a dog?"

"Whoever attacked me." I stared right back at her, refusing to back down.

Before another argument could break out, Frank stepped in and called the police himself.

Katherine stood off to the side, her face pale and her hands clenched tightly together. She looked increasingly anxious.

Not long after, two police officers arrived at the office. They questioned Katherine and me separately before reviewing the security footage.

The cameras had captured everything. The footage clearly showed Katherine attacking me and scratching me, while I'd only given her a light shove to stop her from grabbing my phone.

After watching the footage, the officers took us both to the police station.

In the interview room, one of the officers turned to Katherine, his expression serious. "The footage clearly shows that you attacked him first. He was acting in self-defense."

But Katherine wasn't satisfied. "So he gets away with pushing me? And what about the fact that he saw someone drug my drink and did nothing? Doesn't he have some responsibility for that?"

I spoke up immediately. "Officer, I only pushed her because she was trying to take my phone. I was about to call the police over her claim that someone had drugged her, but she did everything she could to stop me.

"It's almost like she doesn't trust you to find out what really happened."

Both officers frowned and gave Katherine a disapproving look. "Even if he did see what happened, you're just coworkers. He has no legal obligation to intervene, so he can't be held responsible for not helping you.

"As for your claim that someone drugged and sexually assaulted you, we'll investigate that. Now, tell us exactly what happened after you were drugged."

Katherine avoided meeting their eyes, stumbling over her words. "N-Nothing really happened... I was just angry that he saw what was happening and didn't help me."

The officer frowned, his tone growing firmer. "Miss, this is a serious matter. If someone assaulted you, you need to tell us the truth so we can investigate and take the necessary action. Think carefully. What exactly happened?"

Katherine hesitated for a long time before finally shaking her head. When she spoke again, she sounded dismissive. "Nothing happened, really. I just think he's a terrible person for standing by and doing nothing. I got upset and lost my temper, and that's why we started arguing."

One day, I was walking down a street in a foreign country while talking to my wife, Katrina Heaton, on the phone."Don't forget the doll Mia wanted," she reminded me."Already bought it. Don't worry."Suddenly, someone grabbed my leg, making me jump. I looked down to find a filthy woman crouched at my feet."Please, sir. Can you spare some food?" She was covered in bruises and cuts and looked like she'd been badly beaten.I was beginning to feel sorry for her when she suddenly looked up at me, her eyes growing wide. "Daniel Hayes!"I stopped short. I certainly hadn't expected anyone to recognize me here. As I looked more closely, I realized the woman was Katherine. After getting out of prison, Katherine had apparently been shunned by her family, who were too ashamed to have anything to do with her.Desperate for money, she'd seen an online ad promising a well-paying job in a small Somerston. She'd ignored the warnings and entered the country illegally. As soon as she arrived,

Frank had struck a nerve. Sarah knew he was right, and she agreed to help us right then and there. That was why I'd shown Katherine my empty pockets at the coffee shop. I wanted her to believe that she could speak freely without worrying about being recorded. Now we had proof that William had told Katherine to frame me, evidence that he'd drugged her, and records Sarah had provided showing he'd been exchanging professional favors for sex.Once we turned everything over to the police, William and Katherine would finally face the consequences.Early the next morning, I put together a video using the recordings, added captions, and posted it online.Within five minutes, it had gone viral. My comment section was flooded with apologies."So that's what really happened! I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions and blamed you!""I can't believe she would go that far for money. That's disgusting!""William Bennett is a complete monster. Lock him up!"Katherine's social media accounts were so

Katherine continued, "Then William came up with another idea. He told me to post about what happened and make videos accusing you online. He said the internet could ruin someone's life, and nobody would care about the truth."I smiled bitterly. I had to admit that he was right. In both my previous life and this one, I'd been harassed relentlessly by strangers online who thought they were doing the right thing.Katherine seemed to be struggling with her decision. "It's too late for regrets now. And do you really think a few people from the company speaking up will change anything?"All you've got is circumstantial evidence. There aren't any security recordings from that night, so nobody can prove who took me away."Why don't you just take the blame? Even if the company fires you, William will pay you a lot of money. I'll get to go abroad like I wanted, and you'll get a nice payout. We both get what we want. What's wrong with that?""I don't want his money," I interrupted. "I just

Just then, Katherine sent me a message asking to meet. I agreed without hesitation, and we arranged to meet at a coffee shop downtown the next afternoon.I arrived on time, and Katherine walked in shortly afterward. Her eyes were red and puffy, and tear stains still marked her cheeks. She'd clearly been crying for hours. The moment she spotted me, her expression hardened. She glared at me with so much hatred that anyone watching would've thought I was her worst enemy.I picked up my coffee and took a sip before speaking. "Don't look at me like that. Other people might not know what really happened, but you do. If anyone knows how much a false accusation can hurt someone, it's the person making it."Katherine sat down across from me, gripping her purse strap so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her reaction only made me more curious. "There's something I still don't understand. Why are you so determined to pin this on me? You know I'm not the one who assaulted you. Why won't

Over the phone, Frank said, "I visited your mom a few more times after that. When winter came, she didn't even have a decent coat, but she still reminded me to bundle up."The company didn't escape the backlash, either. Things only got worse when people found out we'd fired an innocent man. Meanwhile, William got off scot-free. He even threw me under the bus and blamed me for firing you."Things didn't go much better for me after that. I faced the same kind of online harassment you did, and eventually, it destroyed my family. My wife left me and took the kids. That's why I need to help you this time. I'm helping myself, too."I hadn't realized just how much Mom had suffered after I was gone. Hearing what she'd been through made me hate William and Katherine even more. But I knew Frank wasn't doing this purely out of guilt. I asked, "You're leaving something out, aren't you? Once William's gone, you'll be next in line for his regional manager position. You're using this as an opport

I asked, "What are you doing?"The strangers turned toward me, their expressions turning hostile as soon as they recognized me.One of them stepped forward and pointed a finger in my face. "So you're the guy who drugged and raped that woman? How can you live with yourself after doing something so disgusting?"You deserve to die! And your mother should be ashamed of raising someone like you! She obviously did a terrible job!"I held back my anger and stepped in front of Mom. "The police haven't even finished investigating. You're harassing my family and me over something you read online."What if it turns out she's lying? You do realize you could get into serious legal trouble for this, right?"One of them hesitated and took a step back. But another man grew even angrier, his face turning red as he shouted. "What could possibly change? Why would a woman ruin her own reputation just to accuse someone? I hate scum like you!"My daughter was sexually assaulted by some punk, and eve
