Chapter 6

Author: Waverly June
Katherine snapped, "Why aren't you arresting him? He's the one who sexually assaulted me! If you let him go, he'll just do it again! You're practically letting him get away with it!"

The police officer who'd questioned us frowned, his voice stern. "We don't have any evidence to back up your accusations right now, so we have to let him go. We'll keep investigating and let you know when we have an update."

Katherine grew even more agitated and started shouting. "I saw it with my own eyes! Daniel Hayes is the one who did it! You're not doing your jobs!"

I stood off to the side and spoke up coldly. "Officers, you heard that, right? She's already making false accusations against me, and now she's accusing you of not doing your jobs. She'll say anything to get her way."

The officer's expression darkened, and he cut her off sharply. "We'll investigate this properly and make sure you get an answer. But if you keep making baseless accusations, we'll have to take action against you!"

Katherine fell silent, intimidated by his warning. But she quickly lifted her chin and glared at me. "You did it! I'm not letting you get away with this!"

I walked slowly toward her. "You can twist the story all you want, but it won't change what really happened. We both know whether I assaulted you or not.

"Do you seriously think you can fool the police? Once the truth comes out, I'll make sure you face the consequences for filing a false report and trying to frame me. I'm not letting this slide."

Katherine looked away for a moment, and a flicker of uncertainty crossed her face. But she quickly regained her composure, gritting her teeth as she stood her ground. "I'm just trying to get justice for what happened to me! You can't scare me!"

I shrugged, unfazed. "Say whatever you want. The truth will come out eventually."

With that, I turned my back on her and walked straight out of the police station.

A few days later, a post titled "Coworker Drugged Me at a Company Party, Then I Got Detained for Seeking Justice" went viral online.

In the post, Katherine portrayed herself as the victim, tearfully accusing a former coworker of drugging her at a company party and sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious.

She claimed she'd been detained for seven days simply because she'd gotten carried away while trying to get justice.

She even filmed herself crying, making herself look as helpless and pitiful as possible.

She also posted my employee ID photo and personal information online. She'd barely bothered to blur the screenshots, deliberately leaving my face and personal details clearly visible.

My phone immediately blew up with abusive texts and calls. The messages kept coming, and my phone barely stopped ringing.

Some of the self-proclaimed vigilantes she'd riled up even managed to track down Mom's home address.

Dad had died when I was young, leaving Mom to raise me on her own. She'd worked herself to the bone to give me a decent life.

Now that I finally had a stable job, I'd hoped she could enjoy a peaceful retirement. Instead, because of me, she was being dragged into this nightmare all over again.

That evening, as I was returning home from work, I spotted Mom outside our apartment building. Several people wearing black face masks had surrounded her and were shoving her around.

My heart sank, and I immediately rushed over.

One day, I was walking down a street in a foreign country while talking to my wife, Katrina Heaton, on the phone."Don't forget the doll Mia wanted," she reminded me."Already bought it. Don't worry."Suddenly, someone grabbed my leg, making me jump. I looked down to find a filthy woman crouched at my feet."Please, sir. Can you spare some food?" She was covered in bruises and cuts and looked like she'd been badly beaten.I was beginning to feel sorry for her when she suddenly looked up at me, her eyes growing wide. "Daniel Hayes!"I stopped short. I certainly hadn't expected anyone to recognize me here. As I looked more closely, I realized the woman was Katherine. After getting out of prison, Katherine had apparently been shunned by her family, who were too ashamed to have anything to do with her.Desperate for money, she'd seen an online ad promising a well-paying job in a small Somerston. She'd ignored the warnings and entered the country illegally. As soon as she arrived,

Frank had struck a nerve. Sarah knew he was right, and she agreed to help us right then and there. That was why I'd shown Katherine my empty pockets at the coffee shop. I wanted her to believe that she could speak freely without worrying about being recorded. Now we had proof that William had told Katherine to frame me, evidence that he'd drugged her, and records Sarah had provided showing he'd been exchanging professional favors for sex.Once we turned everything over to the police, William and Katherine would finally face the consequences.Early the next morning, I put together a video using the recordings, added captions, and posted it online.Within five minutes, it had gone viral. My comment section was flooded with apologies."So that's what really happened! I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions and blamed you!""I can't believe she would go that far for money. That's disgusting!""William Bennett is a complete monster. Lock him up!"Katherine's social media accounts were so

Katherine continued, "Then William came up with another idea. He told me to post about what happened and make videos accusing you online. He said the internet could ruin someone's life, and nobody would care about the truth."I smiled bitterly. I had to admit that he was right. In both my previous life and this one, I'd been harassed relentlessly by strangers online who thought they were doing the right thing.Katherine seemed to be struggling with her decision. "It's too late for regrets now. And do you really think a few people from the company speaking up will change anything?"All you've got is circumstantial evidence. There aren't any security recordings from that night, so nobody can prove who took me away."Why don't you just take the blame? Even if the company fires you, William will pay you a lot of money. I'll get to go abroad like I wanted, and you'll get a nice payout. We both get what we want. What's wrong with that?""I don't want his money," I interrupted. "I just

Just then, Katherine sent me a message asking to meet. I agreed without hesitation, and we arranged to meet at a coffee shop downtown the next afternoon.I arrived on time, and Katherine walked in shortly afterward. Her eyes were red and puffy, and tear stains still marked her cheeks. She'd clearly been crying for hours. The moment she spotted me, her expression hardened. She glared at me with so much hatred that anyone watching would've thought I was her worst enemy.I picked up my coffee and took a sip before speaking. "Don't look at me like that. Other people might not know what really happened, but you do. If anyone knows how much a false accusation can hurt someone, it's the person making it."Katherine sat down across from me, gripping her purse strap so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her reaction only made me more curious. "There's something I still don't understand. Why are you so determined to pin this on me? You know I'm not the one who assaulted you. Why won't

Over the phone, Frank said, "I visited your mom a few more times after that. When winter came, she didn't even have a decent coat, but she still reminded me to bundle up."The company didn't escape the backlash, either. Things only got worse when people found out we'd fired an innocent man. Meanwhile, William got off scot-free. He even threw me under the bus and blamed me for firing you."Things didn't go much better for me after that. I faced the same kind of online harassment you did, and eventually, it destroyed my family. My wife left me and took the kids. That's why I need to help you this time. I'm helping myself, too."I hadn't realized just how much Mom had suffered after I was gone. Hearing what she'd been through made me hate William and Katherine even more. But I knew Frank wasn't doing this purely out of guilt. I asked, "You're leaving something out, aren't you? Once William's gone, you'll be next in line for his regional manager position. You're using this as an opport

I asked, "What are you doing?"The strangers turned toward me, their expressions turning hostile as soon as they recognized me.One of them stepped forward and pointed a finger in my face. "So you're the guy who drugged and raped that woman? How can you live with yourself after doing something so disgusting?"You deserve to die! And your mother should be ashamed of raising someone like you! She obviously did a terrible job!"I held back my anger and stepped in front of Mom. "The police haven't even finished investigating. You're harassing my family and me over something you read online."What if it turns out she's lying? You do realize you could get into serious legal trouble for this, right?"One of them hesitated and took a step back. But another man grew even angrier, his face turning red as he shouted. "What could possibly change? Why would a woman ruin her own reputation just to accuse someone? I hate scum like you!"My daughter was sexually assaulted by some punk, and eve
