Chapter 2

Author: Zee
"I can't believe you were hiding something like this, Neal!" Tracy shrieked. "Did you just want to sit back and watch Gavin suffer? How could you be so vicious?"

Me? Vicious?

Despair felt like a tight hand closing around my throat.

Years ago, when I first received the heart transplant, Tracy had wept and sobbed that she didn't care about anything else as long as I survived. But now, she was perfectly fine with watching me die over a common cold.

The last of my gathered strength exploded in that moment. I lunged at Gavin, throwing my weight forward and smashing my fist into the hand warmer pressed against his cheek.

"You don't have the right to use my things!" I roared.

The hand warmer exploded, and the scalding liquid inside made him shriek in pain.

Amid Tracy's horrified screams, I turned toward the flashing camera lens and rasped, "Keep the livestream running! I want the whole world to watch how you two stole my life just to treat his cold!"

The second the words left my lips, Tracy lunged at me with a screech and tried to smash the controller like she had gone mad.

"Neal! Do you really have to destroy everything before you'd stop?"

I threw my body over the controller and desperately protected it, while she clawed at my arms viciously, leaving bloody gashes.

Suddenly, my artificial heart emitted a sharp, erratic alarm, and a violent spasm of pain sent me curling tightly on the floor.

Gavin covered his face and cowered behind Tracy's back. His voice was full of wounded grievance, though it carried the hint of a smile.

"Forget it, Tracy… Neal is doing this just because he's in too much pain," he said. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have gotten sick…"

Meanwhile, viewers flooded the livestream with supportive comments.

"This guy is terrifying. I can't believe he actually hit someone."

"He doesn't look like someone whose heart is failing at all. What a drama queen."

"My heart breaks for Gavin. He's burned but still worried about the livestream."

Staring at the rolling comments, Tracy seemed to draw strength from the crowd's support. She whipped around and snapped at me, "Look at that! Look who's actually making a scene here!

"You had plenty of strength to throw a punch and surely didn't look like someone on the brink of death. Who are you trying to fool with this pathetic act?"

It was laughable.

Every ounce of energy I had used to fight back was at the cost of permanent, irreversible damage to my cardiac cells.

But I couldn't say a word. All I could do was press my hand hard against my chest and feel my life drain away as the last percentages of the battery ticked down.

Standing behind Tracy, Gavin flashed me a triumphant grin and softly said, "Maybe… Maybe I should just give the battery back to Neal, even if it means I might get pneumonia…"

She immediately cut him off. "Absolutely not! You're getting your injection today, no matter what!"

With that, she shut the bedroom door and turned the lock from the outside, leaving me in the room while the camera continued to stream.

Sneering, she called out through a crack in the door, "Since you love streaming live so much, let's let the whole Internet see how the top graduate of a military academy fakes an illness just to gain sympathy!"

No! If I stayed locked in here, I would die!

I crawled toward the door with great difficulty and used the last of my strength to bang against it. But Tracy cracked it open an inch and stomped down hard on my fingers hooked around the doorframe.

"Ah…"

A sharp, excruciating pain forced a ragged gasp from my throat.

The comments were still rolling at a frantic pace.

"Good job, Tracy! A man like him needs to be taught a lesson!"

"Gavin looks so pale. Hurry up and get him out of there!"

Right on cue, Gavin coughed and softly said, "Don't do that to Neal… It hurts me to see him like this."

But the look he gave me was filled with pure mockery.

Just as my consciousness began to fade, he suddenly crouched down and whispered in a voice only I could hear, "Do you really think Tracy doesn't know what happens when you turn on power-saving mode? I told her everything, and she thinks trading your life for my health is a bargain."

"Natalie's car crash was orchestrated by Gavin and executed with Tracy's assistance," Gordon began."The brake line was tampered with using an incredibly subtle, slow-leak method, which resulted in a total brake failure on a steep downhill road."Gavin then used his medical expertise to manipulate the post-crash findings and misdirect the investigators."Despite having anticipated the truth, seeing it laid out in cold words felt like a blunt knife slicing through my heart. I gripped the file so hard that my knuckles paled, while my breathing turned shallow and ragged."Why?" I forced the single word through gritted teeth."She stumbled upon a secret," Gordon explained. His gaze was cold as he continued, "Gavin was using his status as a foreign doctor and international medical-aid programs as cover to steal genetic samples and biological data unique to our national database. He was using Tracy's livestream company to launder the proceeds and smuggle the data out of the country."

Right before darkness swallowed my consciousness, I heard Gordon turn to the law enforcement officers and bark with absolute certainty, "Did you hear that? This is a conspiracy of connected homicides!"Investigate everything! I don't care if it takes 30 or 50 years. Every single person involved, down to the last accomplice, shall be dragged out into the light!"The darkness didn't last long. I fought my way back to consciousness amid the steady beeping of the heart monitor. When I opened my eyes again, the heavy fog clouding my vision had dissipated slightly, so I could make out vague outlines and silhouettes in the room.A breathing tube in my throat prevented me from speaking, while my right hand was tightly held by a warm, calloused hand.Gordon's voice immediately rang in my ears, carrying a hint of barely perceptible relief. "Don't move. We just brought you back to life, so you can't afford any more emotional stress."He leaned in slightly and dropped his voice into a low mu

The footage clearly displayed how Tracy had brutally snatched the spare battery from my hands and handed Gavin the wireless charger to heat up his hand warmer. It was immediately followed by a clear shot of Gavin injecting me with the unknown drug. His movements were practiced and precise as he forced the liquid into my vein with an eerie smile hanging on his face. The fatal blow was an audio recording from ten minutes earlier.Gavin: "Once he's dead, all his assets will belong to us."Tracy: "It's a shame, honestly. He treated me pretty well."Gavin: "Why? Are you having second thoughts?"Tracy: "Of course not. The thought of all his money becoming ours makes me really happy."When the recording ended, a dead silence fell over the hallway. Then came the metallic click of handcuffs, followed by Gavin's hysterical laughter."That's right! I did it all, but I'm a registered foreign expert with diplomatic immunity. None of you can possibly hurt me!"Gordon's cold voice cut off h

"Dr. Nielson!" Tracy shrieked. Her voice was sharp with indignation. "I'm Neal's wife and closest kin! I have every right to stay here and take care of him!"Lora stepped forward and said, "Ms. Maddox, a suspect accused of harming the patient is not permitted to visit. This is for the patient's safety.""Suspect? What suspect?" Tracy's voice was shrill and piercing. "That security footage was taken out of context and fabricated. Neal was the one who initiated the physical violence!"Just then, Gavin's silhouette seemed to shift a few inches closer to the head of my bed. Though my vision was blurred, I could feel his scrutinizing gaze landing on my unfocused eyes."Neal…" His voice carried a wave of unsettling concern as he said, "Your eyes… Can you really not see at all? What are you going to do now? You won't even be able to take care of yourself anymore…""Stay away from him!" Gordon barked."Please don't misunderstand, Dr. Nielson," Gavin said and sounded deeply aggrieved. "I'

"Take it easy," Lora said. "Your optic nerves suffered temporary damage from the oxygen deprivation. It'll take time to recover, but this is a completely normal part of the process."She shifted her attention to my right side. "We've surgically reset your fracture. The nerve damage will require further observation, but your sensation and motor skills should gradually return."The hospital room doors were pushed open before a blurry but tall, straight figure strode in. Through the familiar air and pace, I immediately recognized that it was Gordon."You're stable for now," he remarked as he reviewed the charts. His voice carried a hint of exhausted relief. "But the damage to your cardiac muscles is severe. You need a full reset recovery without serious emotional upheavals or incidents.""Dr. Nielson," I rasped. Countless words of gratitude were clogged in my throat.Gordon sat by my bed as his hand, which had spent years holding surgical scalpels, gently covered my uninjured left ha

My consciousness slowly returned amid violent jolts and the piercing blare of sirens. I found myself lying on a moving stretcher, surrounded by life-support equipment. To my surprise, my mentor, Gordon, was personally waiting at the door of the ER. He was dressed in surgical scrubs with a lab coat thrown over them, clearly having rushed over straight from an operating room.Breaking into a jog alongside the rushing stretcher, he fired off questions."What's the patient's status?""The artificial heart flatlined multiple times, with the longest duration lasting over 20 minutes," Lora Watkins, a senior resident doctor, rapidly reported. "We've also comminuted fracture of the right radius, severe vocal cord damage, and multiple soft tissue contusions…"Gordon pressed his fingers against my radial pulse. His hands, which were usually steady and calm, were trembling slightly."Outrageous! This is absolutely outrageous!" he growled. His voice could barely contain his overwhelming fury.
