I watched Chase intently. We didn't speak to each other for a long minute as I tried to gather my thoughts. He didn't have his plastic grin painted on his face this time. Maybe almost dying made him humble.

"You are looking better," I commented to break the silence.

"Thanks. Luckily, the reaction doesn't last long after the shots," he said dryly.

"Good to know," I said and exhaled slowly. Something about this guy made my stomach turn, and I had a feeling it wasn't just my jealousy. It was something deeper than that.

"What did you want to talk about?" Chase asked.

"You know I have nothing to do with your allergic reaction back there, right?" I said.

Chase shook his head. "Who said you had anything to do with what happened? I never accused you of such a thing."

"No. But I wanted to make things clear between us. I do not like you, that much is obvious, but I don't wish you were dead. I'm not a goddamn criminal," I barked.
