Chapter 4

Autor: Tcee Eke
Aurelia’s POV

Slowly, I turned around to see Callum standing in the doorway, the hidden phone still in my hand.

For one terrifying second, neither of us spoke, then his gaze dropped to the device.

“What are you doing here?” His voice was calm.

I forced myself to smile, “I couldn’t sleep.”

His eyes narrowed, “And that led you to my office?”

I laughed nervously, “I was looking for painkillers.”

The lie sounded ridiculous even to me. Callum clearly didn’t believe a word of it, his gaze remained fixed on the phone.

My pulse hammered. If he asked me to unlock it, I was finished. Fortunately, he walked forward and held out his hand.

“Give it to me.”

I hesitated then I handed it over.

“What phone is that?” I asked casually.

“Work phone,” his answer came immediately.

“Who texted you?”

His expression hardened, “Aurelia.”

“What?”

“It’s work. Mind your damn business.”

His tone left no room for discussion.

I swallowed my frustration.

“Okay.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke, then he slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Go to bed.”

I stared at him.

Callum would’ve kissed my forehead, asked why I couldn’t sleep, and even carried me upstairs to tuck me in. But he walked past me and headed toward the desk.

The next morning, I met Marco at one of the family’s private security offices.

He looked surprised to see me.

“Mrs. Arden.”

“I need a favor.”

His expression immediately became cautious.

“What kind of favor?”

“The security footage from the docks.”

Marco blinked, “The footage?”

“Yes.”

“Give me a few minutes.”

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in front of a computer screen.

The footage played and everything appeared exactly as I remembered yet something felt wrong.

I replayed it and watched it again.

“See? Just like the official report,” Marco said, watching from behind me.

“No,” I said, my fingers freezing above the keyboard, “This footage was edited.”

His eyes widened, “What?”

I pointed toward the screen, “The timestamps don’t match.”

Marco frowned, “What do you mean?”

“Three seconds disappeared here,” I highlighted a section, “And another two seconds here.”

His expression shifted and I kept watching. The more I analyzed the footage, the more problems I found.

Missing frames, corrupted metadata, timestamp inconsistencies. Someone had altered this recording deliberately.

Marco looked stunned, “Can you prove it?”

I smiled grimly, “I used to do this for a living.”

Before becoming Aurelia Arden, I had been one of the best hackers in the country.

“I’ll take this and look at it at home,” I said to him.

Hours later, I sat alone in my home office. My laptop displayed lines of code, and coffee cups covered the desk.

The security footage remained open on one monitor. I followed the digital trail left behind by whoever modified the file.

Most people would’ve missed it but I didn’t. Every edit leaves fingerprints, you just have to know where to look.

Eventually, I found what I was searching for, it was a phone number.

My heartbeat quickened. The number had remotely accessed the security system and uploaded the modified footage.

I immediately began tracing it and a few seconds later, the result appeared.

I froze.

That wasn’t possible, the signal belonged to a private device. One registered inside Arden Manor. More specifically registered to Callum’s office.

My stomach dropped. It was the hidden phone, the same phone I’d found last night.

My hands began to shake. Slowly, I opened another program. If the phone had modified the footage, then maybe it still contained the original files.

Ten minutes later, I broke through the security and the phone’s data appeared on my screen.

I opened the video folder and my mouth went dry. The attack unfolded again and this time the video shifted.

I saw Callum, but he wasn't fighting. He was unconscious and he was being dragged across the docks by two men into a van.

My heart stopped. Callum had been kidnapped exactly at the timestamp that was erased.

The video went dark and six hours later it showed another footage of Callum being dropped off on the docks, dressed in the same clothes, without a scratch.

I sat frozen.

Every hair on my body stood on end because what I had just seen was impossible.

The man who entered that van never should have walked out looking unscratched.

Slowly, I leaned back in my chair as my mind raced.

Callum had been kidnapped, the footage proved it but why didn't he tell anyone? And how did he return without a scratch?

A floorboard creaked behind me just as a voice shattered the silence.

“Why won’t you just let things be?”

My hands trembled violently as the gun slipped from my fingers and clattered onto the floor.I stared ahead when someone groaned, and my heart nearly stopped.“Callum!”I ran forward. Relief crashed through me when I saw him struggling to his feet. He was bruised and bleeding, but he was alive. My gaze immediately shifted. Cillian was lying on the ground several feet away, blood spread across his shirt.A stunned expression crossed his face as he looked down at the wound. For the first time since I’d met him, he looked genuinely shocked, as if he never imagined his plan would end like this, as if he never imagined I would pull the trigger. The remaining henchman looked between the two brothers before wisely deciding he wanted no part in what happened next. He turned and ran, and nobody tried to stop him.I moved toward Callum. The moment I reached him,

Aurelia’s POVMy blood turned cold as the question echoed inside my head before panic slammed into me. “Nolan,” I gasped. I looked at Callum, and the same realization had already crossed his face just as his entire body went rigid.“What have you done?” he roared.Cillian smiled. The sight made my stomach churn.“Now we’re asking the right questions.”“WHERE IS MY SON?” Callum bellowed. The warehouse shook with the force of his voice.Cillian didn’t even flinch. Instead, he looked amused. As though he had been waiting for this reaction.“As angry as ever.”“If you touch my son—”“What?” Cillian interrupted mockingly. “You’ll kill me?”Callum jerked violently against the ropes, and the chair rattled. For a moment, I genuinely thought he was going to break free.“Tell me where he is.”Cillian laughed, “Relax.”My heart pounded. Relax? How could he possibly expect us to relax?“He’s alive,” Cillian said. I sighed in relief just as Callum turned toward me. “At first, I planned to kill

Aurelia’s POVThe henchmen dragged me across the warehouse. I stumbled several times, but they never loosened their grip.Cillian walked ahead of us with his hands tucked into his pockets as though we were taking a casual evening stroll instead of marching toward God knows what.My heart refused to stop pounding. The real Callum was alive. The thought repeated itself over and over inside my head.We reached the far end of the warehouse where a large steel door stood. One of the guards stepped forward and unlocked it. The heavy door creaked open.“After you,” Cillian said with a mocking smile.I hesitated, then I stepped inside. The room was dimly lit. At first, I saw nothing except concrete walls, then my eyes landed on the figure sitting in the corner. My breath caught. The man was tied to a chair. His wrists were bound behind his back. Bruises covered his face, dried blood stained his shirt, and his head hung low.For a second, I couldn’t move, then he slowly lifted his head, and our

Aurelia’s POVThe gun remained pointed directly at my chest. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it.For a long moment, I simply stared at him, then I laughed. A faint crease appeared between his brows.“What’s so funny? I just told you I'm not your husband,” he scowled at me.“I know,” I said quietly, and his smile faltered, but I continued, “I’ve known ever since you came back.”His smile disappeared completely as silence settled over the warehouse, and I took a slow step toward him despite the gun aimed at my chest.“The real Callum remembered every anniversary,” I continued, “He knew I hated mountains, he never would have forgotten Nolan’s tournament, he never would have told me to mind my own business, and he most certainly wouldn't have altered the security footage after being kidnapped.”For the first time, genuine surprise flashed across his face.“I spent days trying to understand what happened to my husband,” I held his gaze, “Then I realized I was asking the wrong question

Aurelia’s POVMy blood turned to ice as Callum stood behind me, his gaze flickering from my laptop screen to my face.I forced myself to remain calm.“What are you doing here?” I asked.A humorless laugh escaped him.“This is my office,” he snapped. “Right,” I laughed nervously. He took a few steps forward, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Why won't you let things be, Aurelia? Why do you keep digging?” he hissed at me. My grip tightened around the edge of the desk.“Why didn't you tell anyone you were kidnapped and how did you survive?” I asked, my tone dripping with suspicion. His jaw tightened, “I am the head of the Arden Family. I can't go around letting everyone know that in a moment of weakness, I was kidnapped. Besides, I fought my way out and escaped.”“But why did you lie to me? Why didn't you tell me?” I queried. His voice was sharp, “If word gets out that I was kidnapped, every enemy we have will see weakness. I couldn't risk you knowing.”I frowned. His explanation ma
