Chapter 1

Author: Vox Harbor
Three days after my daughter was born, my husband was killed by a car while running to the store for some groceries.

I was so devastated I passed out. When I came to, his funeral was already over, and a stranger was standing in my living room.

"I'm your husband's twin brother. I'll be around to help take care of you and the baby."

Later, I locked myself in the bathroom with his urn, sobbing uncontrollably, when I overheard his childhood buddies talking through the open window.

"Dude, you’re so cold blooded. Inventing a twin brother just to dodge diaper duty? What's next—triplets and quadruplets coming out of the woodwork too?"

"Shut up, man! I didn't have a choice. This kid cries non-stop. Look how exhausted I am after just three days! Find me two hotties so I can catch a break."

"Two? Why stop there? You're finally free—might as well hook up with a dozen! Hannah Lanson gave you a kid, so that's done. Why not just keep this new identity? You won't even have to pay child support!"

My husband's voice sounded annoyed.

"No way. I love Hannah. After I've had my fun, I'm going to win her back. She'll fall for me again, I know it. Then we'll have a baby boy!"

I wiped away my tears and flushed the "ashes" down the toilet.

"Your baby's breathing is abnormal. It might be neonatal pneumonia. We need to transfer her to intensive care. You should call a family member to come."

"Where's your family?"

I wiped away my tears. "My family member is dead. I'll carry her myself."

The doctor looked disapproving. "You had a C-section just three days ago. You need to rest. Give me a family contact number, and I'll call them."

The doctor called Kelvin Ferguson.

Kelvin's end was extremely noisy, with sounds of people toasting and clinking glasses.

"I'm not her family. Let her figure it out herself!"

The doctor's tone became stern. "The baby's condition is very serious, and the mother needs assistance too..."

"Tell Hannah to call her own parents. Why bother my bro?"

I heard one of Kelvin's friends in the background before the call disconnected.

Kelvin and I had been together for eight years and married for one. During that time, I'd never met his family. Even for major events like our wedding, pregnancy, and childbirth, his parents never showed up—only a few friends.

These friends clearly looked down on me, though they pretended otherwise out of respect for Kelvin.

The doctor looked troubled. "I'll find a nurse to help watch your baby. As for the cost..."

I pressed my lips together. "I'll pay the full amount."

I still had Kelvin's salary card. I handled our daily expenses while we saved his income for baby supplies. Now it would go toward hospital bills.

Shortly after, the nurse who went to process the payment returned with a troubled expression.

"There's no money on this card!"

"That's impossible..."

I called Kelvin repeatedly. After more than ten attempts, he finally answered.

“Hannah, I'm busy right now!"

I could hear women's voices in the background, but I had no time for that. "Where's the money from your card?"

"You mean my brother's salary card? Before he died, my brother said that money was for our parents, so I transferred it."

"You bastard, the baby is—"

“Hannah, gotta go. I'm really busy!"

"Oh, and pack up your things when you get a chance. That apartment was also part of my brother's inheritance. You can't live there anymore!"

"I'll come collect the keys tomorrow!"

"Kelvin!" I shouted, my emotions overwhelming me. The post-C-section contractions hadn't subsided, and the pain left me sweating.

"Ms. Lanson?"

The nurse stood waiting with my baby. I pulled another card from my purse.

"Use this one instead."

"What the hell? Who is that?"My dad had just walked in and let out a yelp when he saw the phone screen."Oh, it's that lowlife Kelvin!"When Kelvin didn't get a response from me, he slumped against our front door and pulled out his phone.I zoomed in on the screen and saw he was watching an old video of me—one where I shouted "Kelvin, I love you!" only to be coldly pushed away.Tears streamed down his face, looking genuinely heartfelt. But so what? I was way past feeling hurt about it all."Oh my goodness, little Tina just kicked grandma again, you little troublemaker!"Little Tina could roll over now, but whenever I thought about that day when the doctor rushed her away, her pale face with that bluish tint, my heart just would break.Kelvin owed us for all of this. If my parents hadn't given me that card, if I'd been left with nothing, my baby and I might not have made it that day.One day as we were coming back from the beach, Kelvin suddenly appeared in front of us."Han

"Hannah, look, look—it was this tramp who seduced me. You're still the one I love most."Look, here's a video we made together before. You said you loved me—do you remember?"Afraid I might say no, Kelvin quickly explained."It's okay if you don't remember. Hannah, I love you. I've only loved you my entire life. We've been together since our school days, and now we're married with a child. We're the perfect family!""Look, this is the wedding dress I prepared for you."Kelvin pulled out a large box from nearby. "This is the wedding dress, and this is the veil."He stood up and gestured, "You always envied other people's weddings. See, this veil is big enough to cover both of us. We can kiss under it during the ceremony.""Hannah, can you forgive me?"[What a jerk! He always knew what she wanted but never gave it to her!][This scumbag has the nerve to livestream for attention. It's so frustrating not being able to reach through the screen and slap him!]I didn't send any more

"I've been blocked again."Kelvin froze for a moment, nearly at his wit's end. "I'll start a livestream. Hannah used to love watching livestreams. She'll definitely come across mine."My mom gave me her phone with a strange expression on her face. When I looked, I saw Kelvin holding up a large photo of me in one hand and a picture of our baby in the other. He was tearfully recounting our love story, and I felt more and more uncomfortable listening to it."Hannah, I don't know if you can see this livestream, but I wanted to propose to you in front of all these viewers. I wanted to give you a grand wedding!""Kelvin, women like Hannah Lanson who run off with your money aren't worth this kind of effort!" William suddenly stood up and righteously proclaimed while chaos erupted around them.I saw Kelvin pause for a moment and look toward his friends.More and more friends stood up—one claimed I wouldn't let Kelvin have friends, another said I tricked him into marriage, and finally s

With my parents helping out and entertaining little Tina now and then, I've had a really comfortable postpartum recovery.I almost forgot that I had already booked a banquet hall to celebrate my daughter's birth and our wedding. The day I gave birth, right after I left the hospital room, Kelvin asked me to book a banquet hall. He wanted to throw a lavish party for our baby and have a grand wedding at the same time.I was in pain and exhausted then, but still eagerly worked out all the details with the banquet hall. When the actual day came, Kelvin showed up at my parents' doorstep carefully dressed and holding a bouquet of roses.Too bad I was already in Brookshire by then.Winter was coming and it was getting cold. My parents, concerned for the baby, had already bought a house in Brookshire, saying they wanted to spend winter there. When Kelvin called, I had nearly forgotten about him.“Hannah, open the door! I'm here to take you and the baby to party.”After living carefree

"Hannah, why didn't you contact us when something this serious happened?"My mom couldn't stop crying. She held my hand, clearly upset about my situation. The hospital was too busy with people coming and going, so I brought them back to the postpartum care center."Mom, Dad, it's a long story..."I explained how Kelvin had faked his death. My father's face immediately darkened."That bastard!"My mom started crying again. "I knew it. My stubborn girl wouldn't have touched that card unless she had nowhere else to turn."I felt helpless. I'd actually planned to contact my parents after completing my postpartum recovery, but they showed up early."So now, you're..."My dad studied my mental state, seeming surprised by how calm I was.I smiled. "It's been a while now. I'm treating it like being bitten by a dog. Luckily, we never got our marriage certificate, so everything can still be fixed.""No certificate?"My dad seemed surprised, since I had once been desperate to get marr

I laughed at his ridiculous words."You're insane."After hearing what he said, the neighbor also concluded Kelvin was crazy and threatened to call security to remove him. After being chased away, Kelvin called a locksmith. He couldn't believe I'd actually sold the house.I remembered how I'd immediately begged my parents to buy that apartment after he mentioned wanting a home.Later, Kelvin constantly tried to convince me to add his name to the deed, but somehow, every time we were headed to get it notarized, something would come up. His name was never added. We hadn't even gotten a marriage certificate. He claimed he wanted to "maintain that dating feeling," which perfectly appealed to my romance-obsessed brain. I was so love-struck that I didn't mind not having a certificate or wedding, thinking it was romantic. Our "marriage" was just Kelvin treating his friends to dinner.Looking back, my love-addled brain actually did me a favor this time! The locksmith opened the door
