Chapter 2

作者: Belen
The next morning, Nolan drove my car from the hotel garage and dropped me off at Aurora Clean Tech.

"Pick you up tonight?" He rested one hand on the steering wheel, still wearing the lazy look of someone who hadn't had enough sleep.

I pushed open the car door and smoothed my skirt. "Grayson said he's taking me to dinner. The board's been watching our marriage closely. I need to keep up the act."

Nolan's jaw tightened immediately. I leaned over and pinched his cheek. "Settle down. I'll go with you to check out the new race bike next week."

"I don't want a race bike." He caught my wrist and pressed a kiss into my palm. "I want you to end your marriage sooner."

I didn't promise a date. I just smiled at him and walked into the lobby.

The elevator doors were about to close when a young woman in a white sundress squeezed in. Leah saw me and visibly paled, then murmured a greeting. "Good morning, Selena."

My gaze landed on the delicate diamond pendant at her throat. Youthful design, modest price. Exactly the kind of gift Grayson excelled at: flashy enough to impress, with the actual cost kept carefully in check.

"That necklace looks lovely on you," I said.

Leah instinctively covered the pendant, then pressed the button for the marketing floor in a fluster. But when we reached the top floor, she followed me into the boardroom anyway, claiming she was delivering coffee to the executives.

Grayson was sitting at the head of the table. When he saw me walk in, he immediately put on a warm smile. "I was so busy last night I didn't have time for you. Did you sleep well?"

"Very well." I pulled out my chair and sat down. "The bed felt huge."

He didn't catch the implication, or chose not to.

Halfway through the meeting, Grayson tapped the table. "Regarding the West Coast urban energy storage project, I think Selena has been taking on too much lately. Between the IPO review, supply chain, and legal, she's spread thin. We should hand the project over to Eric."

The room went quiet.

This was a project my team had spent four months landing. The partner had even written into the letter of intent that the final contract had to be signed by me on behalf of the company. And now Grayson wanted to hand it to his man right before the deal closed.

I looked at him. "The partner only recognizes my team. If we swap the lead this late and it causes a delay, who takes responsibility?"

"I'm just worried about you." Grayson's voice was gentle, as if he genuinely cared about his wife's wellbeing. "The pre-IPO audit is more important than any single project. I don't want you running yourself into the ground."

Just then, Leah approached with coffee. Her ankle buckled, and an entire cup of scalding coffee splashed across the project files.

Brown liquid soaked through the pages.

Leah stumbled back two steps, clutching her ankle, her eyes turning red at once. "I'm sorry. I sprained my ankle last night and lost my balance."

Before I could speak, Grayson's face darkened. "Selena, why didn't you keep the important documents out of the way? This only proves my point. You haven't been yourself lately. The project gets reassigned today."

The board members exchanged glances. No one said a word.

I looked at this clumsy little performance and smiled. I pulled out a tissue and slowly wiped the coffee from the table. "Since you want it so badly, take it. I just hope Eric can handle what he's stepping into."

Grayson's eyebrows lifted slightly. He thought he'd finally brought me to heel.

I stood and walked over to Leah, straightening her crooked collar. "Next time you spill coffee, work on your aim. And the diamond clarity on that necklace is terrible. Since Grayson is willing to rub your feet in the middle of the night, you should at least make him buy you something worthy of the effort."

Leah's head snapped up, her face frozen in horror.

The nib of the pen in Grayson's hand snapped with a sharp crack.

I picked up my bag and walked out of the boardroom without giving either of them a chance to explain.

That evening, Grayson took me to a reservation-only restaurant by the lake. He cut my steak for me and slid a jewelry box across the table.

"Don't take this morning too seriously. That project was too risky. I didn't want the partner giving you trouble."

Inside the box was a pavé diamond necklace, a little more expensive than Leah's but just as perfunctory.

I closed the box and smiled softly. "Thank you. That's very thoughtful."

Grayson visibly relaxed. He took my hand and launched into visions of post-IPO travel, a house by the sea, and our long-overdue honeymoon.

I listened attentively. I even nodded along.

Because I knew this might be the last time he'd ever sit in a restaurant like this and talk about the future as a company founder.

As the aurora faded, Nolan and I were still sitting on the wooden deck outside our cabin. He handed me a warm drink and kissed the top of my head. "What are you thinking about?"I held his hand. It was lightly calloused from years of training, but it had never forced me when I said no and never tried to cage me when he was afraid of losing me."That freedom and love can exist at the same time."I used to believe that marriage meant tolerance, shared burdens, and finding excuses for the other person again and again. I turned myself into the company's most dependable manager and the most reliable wife, convinced that if I were just good enough, Grayson would eventually appreciate me.It took me too long to understand that the confidence to be loved never comes from making yourself small, and it doesn't come from dragging a selfish man back from his own mistakes.Real confidence is knowing you have the power to walk away at any moment, to flip the table, and to start over from scratch.Wh

After Grayson went to prison, his parents sent a letter through their attorney accusing me of forgetting all our years together and insisting I could have given him one more chance before the criminal investigation. My lawyer asked if I wanted to respond. I told her to send back the court verdict and the list of companies he'd harmed.Shared history doesn't mean giving an adult unlimited immunity from the consequences of his own choices. He hadn't just deceived me. He had defrauded employees, vendors, and investors. Hundreds of families depended on that company for their livelihoods. I had no right to forgive him on their behalf just to preserve my image as the gracious ex-wife.That was the last time I dealt with anything from Grayson's family. From then on, whether they sent apologies, accusations, or pleas, my attorneys filed them away. I never read another one.A year later, we went to Iceland. The northern lights unfurled slowly across the sky outside Reykjavik, ribbons of green a

Three months later, the criminal case entered plea negotiations and trial preparation. The prosecution charged Grayson with wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forging board authorizations, obstruction of justice, and filing false statements when applying for the temporary freeze order. His attorneys tried to shift the blame onto Leah and the chief financial officer, but server records, recordings, and banking instructions dismantled each attempt. In the end, Grayson pleaded guilty to the major charges in exchange for a reduced sentence. The court sentenced him to twelve years and ordered restitution of illegal proceeds along with damages to the company and its investors. Because he had violated a protective order, his bail was revoked and he was remanded into custody in the courtroom.Leah received a cooperation agreement. She returned most of the jewelry and vehicles purchased with company funds, paid a fine, and left Seattle. What she received wasn't payment for her testimony. It wa

Over the next two weeks, the commercial case, the divorce proceedings, and the criminal investigation all moved forward at the same time.Family court, citing preliminary financial tracing, prohibited Grayson from disposing of marital assets. The commercial judge found that he had severely breached his fiduciary duty to the company and its shareholders. Based on wire transfers, false invoices, and forged authorizations, the DA's office sought an arrest warrant. On the day of the final hearing, the judge confirmed that the equity agreement was void due to fraud and undisclosed conflicts of interest. All my shares were restored. Grayson was permanently barred from any role in company management and ordered to return the diverted funds, cover audit costs, and pay punitive damages. The divorce ruling didn't strip him of everything simply because of the affair. Instead, the court divided assets based on their origin and on willful dissipation: the company's initial capital had come from my

The next morning, the state superior court's commercial division held an emergency hearing. This wasn't the final divorce trial, but a fast-track review of the equity transfer, the temporary suspension, and the account freeze. Grayson sat at the respondent's table in a tailored charcoal suit, looking perfectly composed. His attorney opened by submitting the agreement I'd signed, arguing that the profit target hadn't been met and the share custody and personal guarantee were now in effect."The authenticity of the signature is not in dispute," my attorney said, rising. "What is in dispute is whether this agreement was built on fraud, conflicts of interest, and falsified financial data."The hint of a smile still lingered on Grayson's face. The screen lit up, displaying an easily overlooked line in the agreement's appendix: a settlement account number. My attorney pointed to Redwood Consulting's receiving account. "This entity is listed as a vendor but has no employees and no business pr

The next morning, I walked into the office as usual, only to find two private security guards posted outside the executive suite.Grayson was sitting in my chair, the newly effective equity agreement spread across my desk. He stubbed out a cigarette, his expression dark. "You've been temporarily suspended by the board. The quarterly close shows that profits missed the guarantee target. Your voting rights and share custody have been transferred to my trust.""When did the board hold a meeting?""Emergency vote overnight." He smirked. "I had enough proxy votes. You're under investigation for damaging the company's image and leaking proprietary information. Your system access is revoked until the inquiry concludes."I glanced at the insignia on the guards' uniforms. "A private company has no authority to confiscate my personal devices or prevent me from contacting my attorney. You'd better make sure they stay in the hallway and don't lay a hand on me."Grayson stepped close and lowered hi
