Chapter 3

作者: Belen
Back at home, Grayson pulled a thick shareholder agreement from his briefcase.

"Several investment firms are requiring consolidated voting rights before the IPO." He sat down beside me, his tone earnest. "We need to sign a profit guarantee and share custody agreement. If you temporarily transfer your voting rights to me, the company will be able to make decisions more efficiently."

I sank back into the couch and flipped from the first page to the last.

On the surface, the agreement looked like a standard pre-IPO governance arrangement. But the hidden clauses were beautifully crafted: if quarterly profits fell below the agreed target, my shares would transfer at a nominal price into a family trust controlled by Grayson. On top of that, I'd assume personal liability for certain debts.

Even more conveniently, the profit settlement account ultimately pointed to a vendor called Redwood Consulting.

What Grayson didn't know was that three months ago, I'd already discovered that large amounts of the company's procurement spending were flowing to this shell company with no employees and no office address. It was registered under Leah's cousin's name, but the real controlling party was Grayson.

He was siphoning off profits, manufacturing the appearance of underperformance, and then using this agreement to take my shares.

"Isn't that a lot of liability?" I looked up. "If things go wrong, I could lose all my shares and end up buried in debt."

Grayson immediately took my hand. "Don't you trust me? I'm guaranteeing even more than you are. We're husband and wife. Why would I ever set you up?"

He spoke with utter sincerity, without once looking away.

I looked at him for a few seconds, picked up the pen, and signed my name on the signature line.

Grayson stared at the signature, his Adam's apple bobbing. He quickly tucked the agreement into his briefcase and didn't even notice the zipper catching.

"With this, the last hurdle for the IPO is cleared." He stood up and faked a yawn. "Long day. I'll sleep in the guest room so I don't wake you."

I nodded sweetly. "Good night."

After the guest room door closed, I locked the bedroom and answered Nolan's video call.

On the screen, he'd just finished night training. His black tank top was soaked through with sweat, the muscles in his shoulders and arms pulled taut. His first words were, "Did he touch you?"

"No. He got me to sign an agreement designed to strip me of my shares, then slunk off to the guest room."

Nolan's expression darkened. "You signed?"

"I did."

"Selena, that company was paid for with the trust fund your mother left you. You built it with him from a garage. How could you—"

Before I could explain, Grayson's lowered voice drifted in from the hallway. I held up a finger to Nolan, put in my earbuds, and moved to the door.

"Leah, don't cry. Snapping at you in the boardroom today was all for the directors' benefit. That necklace you liked? I'll buy it for you tomorrow. The one she got isn't worth a fraction of yours.

"She already signed the agreement. Once the shares move into my trust and she gets stuck with the debt, she'll have no choice but to leave the company. Then I'll divorce her and give you the life you want."

I listened to his promises and felt no pain. Only a deep sense of absurdity.

When I returned to the bed, Nolan's eyes were already red with fury, even through the screen. "I'm coming over right now. Let me throw him down the stairs, or at least break the hand he signed that agreement with."

"Violence would end your racing career," I said evenly. "And he's not worth it."

"Then why did you sign?"

"Because that agreement contains the account that proves he controls the shell company. The moment it goes into effect, he'll have hand-delivered proof of financial fraud straight to my lawyers."

Nolan went quiet for two seconds, then broke into a grin. "So you're waiting for him to spring his own trap."

"Yes." I settled back against my pillow. "Tomorrow he says he's meeting investors in Portland. In reality, he's taking Leah to a private hot spring resort in Napa Valley."

"Are you going to catch them in the act?"

"No." I looked toward the door, my voice steady. "I'm going to help him exit his marriage with dignity, and his company without any."

As the aurora faded, Nolan and I were still sitting on the wooden deck outside our cabin. He handed me a warm drink and kissed the top of my head. "What are you thinking about?"I held his hand. It was lightly calloused from years of training, but it had never forced me when I said no and never tried to cage me when he was afraid of losing me."That freedom and love can exist at the same time."I used to believe that marriage meant tolerance, shared burdens, and finding excuses for the other person again and again. I turned myself into the company's most dependable manager and the most reliable wife, convinced that if I were just good enough, Grayson would eventually appreciate me.It took me too long to understand that the confidence to be loved never comes from making yourself small, and it doesn't come from dragging a selfish man back from his own mistakes.Real confidence is knowing you have the power to walk away at any moment, to flip the table, and to start over from scratch.Wh

After Grayson went to prison, his parents sent a letter through their attorney accusing me of forgetting all our years together and insisting I could have given him one more chance before the criminal investigation. My lawyer asked if I wanted to respond. I told her to send back the court verdict and the list of companies he'd harmed.Shared history doesn't mean giving an adult unlimited immunity from the consequences of his own choices. He hadn't just deceived me. He had defrauded employees, vendors, and investors. Hundreds of families depended on that company for their livelihoods. I had no right to forgive him on their behalf just to preserve my image as the gracious ex-wife.That was the last time I dealt with anything from Grayson's family. From then on, whether they sent apologies, accusations, or pleas, my attorneys filed them away. I never read another one.A year later, we went to Iceland. The northern lights unfurled slowly across the sky outside Reykjavik, ribbons of green a

Three months later, the criminal case entered plea negotiations and trial preparation. The prosecution charged Grayson with wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forging board authorizations, obstruction of justice, and filing false statements when applying for the temporary freeze order. His attorneys tried to shift the blame onto Leah and the chief financial officer, but server records, recordings, and banking instructions dismantled each attempt. In the end, Grayson pleaded guilty to the major charges in exchange for a reduced sentence. The court sentenced him to twelve years and ordered restitution of illegal proceeds along with damages to the company and its investors. Because he had violated a protective order, his bail was revoked and he was remanded into custody in the courtroom.Leah received a cooperation agreement. She returned most of the jewelry and vehicles purchased with company funds, paid a fine, and left Seattle. What she received wasn't payment for her testimony. It wa

Over the next two weeks, the commercial case, the divorce proceedings, and the criminal investigation all moved forward at the same time.Family court, citing preliminary financial tracing, prohibited Grayson from disposing of marital assets. The commercial judge found that he had severely breached his fiduciary duty to the company and its shareholders. Based on wire transfers, false invoices, and forged authorizations, the DA's office sought an arrest warrant. On the day of the final hearing, the judge confirmed that the equity agreement was void due to fraud and undisclosed conflicts of interest. All my shares were restored. Grayson was permanently barred from any role in company management and ordered to return the diverted funds, cover audit costs, and pay punitive damages. The divorce ruling didn't strip him of everything simply because of the affair. Instead, the court divided assets based on their origin and on willful dissipation: the company's initial capital had come from my

The next morning, the state superior court's commercial division held an emergency hearing. This wasn't the final divorce trial, but a fast-track review of the equity transfer, the temporary suspension, and the account freeze. Grayson sat at the respondent's table in a tailored charcoal suit, looking perfectly composed. His attorney opened by submitting the agreement I'd signed, arguing that the profit target hadn't been met and the share custody and personal guarantee were now in effect."The authenticity of the signature is not in dispute," my attorney said, rising. "What is in dispute is whether this agreement was built on fraud, conflicts of interest, and falsified financial data."The hint of a smile still lingered on Grayson's face. The screen lit up, displaying an easily overlooked line in the agreement's appendix: a settlement account number. My attorney pointed to Redwood Consulting's receiving account. "This entity is listed as a vendor but has no employees and no business pr

The next morning, I walked into the office as usual, only to find two private security guards posted outside the executive suite.Grayson was sitting in my chair, the newly effective equity agreement spread across my desk. He stubbed out a cigarette, his expression dark. "You've been temporarily suspended by the board. The quarterly close shows that profits missed the guarantee target. Your voting rights and share custody have been transferred to my trust.""When did the board hold a meeting?""Emergency vote overnight." He smirked. "I had enough proxy votes. You're under investigation for damaging the company's image and leaking proprietary information. Your system access is revoked until the inquiry concludes."I glanced at the insignia on the guards' uniforms. "A private company has no authority to confiscate my personal devices or prevent me from contacting my attorney. You'd better make sure they stay in the hallway and don't lay a hand on me."Grayson stepped close and lowered hi
