Chapter 4

作者: Belen
On the northern edge of Napa Valley sat a members-only hot spring resort, its private villas separated by high walls. What guests valued most was discretion.

I booked the villa next to Grayson's through our joint account and asked hotel security in advance to turn on the cameras covering the shared walkway. That evening, Nolan and I soaked in the open-air hot spring. The valley air was cool, but the rising steam was warm enough to make you drowsy.

Nolan wrapped his arms around me from behind and pressed a kiss to the back of my neck. "Is the water okay?"

I held down his wandering hand beneath the surface. "Quiet. They've already arrived next door."

Leah's laughter soon drifted over the wall.

"Grayson, you're splashing water all over my face."

Then came Grayson's attempt at youthful flirtation. "You look great in that swimsuit. Selena is permanently in boardroom mode. Even her hugs feel like contract reviews. Nothing like you. You're adorable."

Nolan's body went rigid, his expression turning frighteningly dark.

"Don't do anything rash," I warned.

But he lifted me out of the water and pressed me against the floor-to-ceiling glass, his voice low. "It's not that you don't feel anything. He just never deserved to see the real you."

Before I could answer, footsteps sounded outside. Grayson was walking through the shared passageway to the wine cellar.

The floor-to-ceiling window was set to one-way privacy mode. Nolan reached up and hit the control on the wall. Within seconds, the glass turned transparent.

Sunset poured into the room. I was in a red swimsuit, cradled in Nolan's arms. The intimacy of the image needed no explanation.

Grayson's footsteps stopped dead.

His face went white first, then twisted with jealousy and rage. He didn't burst in. Instead, he whipped out his phone and aimed it at the glass, recording.

"Selena, I have to hand it to you." He sneered through the gate. "Cheating on your husband, spending our money on some student. Tomorrow this video is going to every board member and investor. Your reputation, your shares, all of it goes up in smoke."

He held up the phone, his voice growing more vicious. "Get ready to walk away from the divorce with nothing."

Nolan released me, pulled on a robe, and walked outside.

Grayson stepped back but kept the phone raised. "You touch me, and I'll call the—"

Before he could finish, Nolan knocked the phone from his hand. The device dropped into the shallow pool, its screen going dark. Grayson swung in fury. Nolan sidestepped, seized his arm, and slammed him down beside the pool's edge.

Grayson struggled to get up. Nolan pinned his shoulder with a knee, forcing his face into the shallow water. Not to drown him, just to keep him from attacking again before security arrived.

"You can blame me all you want," Nolan said quietly. "But if you insult her one more time, I'll make sure the police report makes clear that you trespassed on a private villa, filmed us without consent, and threw the first punch."

Hotel security arrived quickly, their body cameras capturing the scene. Grayson scrambled out of the water, dripping and humiliated. Leah rushed over in a robe, shrieking accusations of assault.

I put on my jacket and walked slowly to Grayson. "Unauthorized recording. Threatening to distribute intimate footage. Trespassing into someone else's booked villa. You should be grateful Nolan only held you down in the water instead of calling the police first."

Grayson's face was dripping, his eyes red with rage. "You're spending my money on him, and you have the nerve to point fingers at me?"

I smiled. "Your money?

"When the company nearly went under, I was the one who used my mother's trust fund to save you. The house you live in, the car you drive, the membership at this resort, all of it comes from assets under my name. You're using the company I built to pamper your young lover, and you think I need you."

He forced a sneer. "So what? The equity agreement is already signed. Once the quarterly numbers come in, you lose your shares and get saddled with the debt. Even if you file for divorce right now, it won't change anything."

I pulled a divorce petition and a notice from my attorney out of my bag and held them against his chest. "Tomorrow morning, my lawyer files with the state court. You can negotiate through counsel, or you can keep tearing up papers and refusing to sign. Marriage isn't prison. I don't need your permission to leave."

Grayson ripped the documents from his chest and tore them apart. "I'll drag this out until you have nothing. I'll make sure you're left with nothing at the company or in court."

"Then I'll see you in court."

I took Nolan's arm. As we passed Leah, I paused. "You'd better save every transfer Grayson ever sent you. Soon enough, those gifts are going to become evidence in a financial investigation."

As the aurora faded, Nolan and I were still sitting on the wooden deck outside our cabin. He handed me a warm drink and kissed the top of my head. "What are you thinking about?"I held his hand. It was lightly calloused from years of training, but it had never forced me when I said no and never tried to cage me when he was afraid of losing me."That freedom and love can exist at the same time."I used to believe that marriage meant tolerance, shared burdens, and finding excuses for the other person again and again. I turned myself into the company's most dependable manager and the most reliable wife, convinced that if I were just good enough, Grayson would eventually appreciate me.It took me too long to understand that the confidence to be loved never comes from making yourself small, and it doesn't come from dragging a selfish man back from his own mistakes.Real confidence is knowing you have the power to walk away at any moment, to flip the table, and to start over from scratch.Wh

After Grayson went to prison, his parents sent a letter through their attorney accusing me of forgetting all our years together and insisting I could have given him one more chance before the criminal investigation. My lawyer asked if I wanted to respond. I told her to send back the court verdict and the list of companies he'd harmed.Shared history doesn't mean giving an adult unlimited immunity from the consequences of his own choices. He hadn't just deceived me. He had defrauded employees, vendors, and investors. Hundreds of families depended on that company for their livelihoods. I had no right to forgive him on their behalf just to preserve my image as the gracious ex-wife.That was the last time I dealt with anything from Grayson's family. From then on, whether they sent apologies, accusations, or pleas, my attorneys filed them away. I never read another one.A year later, we went to Iceland. The northern lights unfurled slowly across the sky outside Reykjavik, ribbons of green a

Three months later, the criminal case entered plea negotiations and trial preparation. The prosecution charged Grayson with wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forging board authorizations, obstruction of justice, and filing false statements when applying for the temporary freeze order. His attorneys tried to shift the blame onto Leah and the chief financial officer, but server records, recordings, and banking instructions dismantled each attempt. In the end, Grayson pleaded guilty to the major charges in exchange for a reduced sentence. The court sentenced him to twelve years and ordered restitution of illegal proceeds along with damages to the company and its investors. Because he had violated a protective order, his bail was revoked and he was remanded into custody in the courtroom.Leah received a cooperation agreement. She returned most of the jewelry and vehicles purchased with company funds, paid a fine, and left Seattle. What she received wasn't payment for her testimony. It wa

Over the next two weeks, the commercial case, the divorce proceedings, and the criminal investigation all moved forward at the same time.Family court, citing preliminary financial tracing, prohibited Grayson from disposing of marital assets. The commercial judge found that he had severely breached his fiduciary duty to the company and its shareholders. Based on wire transfers, false invoices, and forged authorizations, the DA's office sought an arrest warrant. On the day of the final hearing, the judge confirmed that the equity agreement was void due to fraud and undisclosed conflicts of interest. All my shares were restored. Grayson was permanently barred from any role in company management and ordered to return the diverted funds, cover audit costs, and pay punitive damages. The divorce ruling didn't strip him of everything simply because of the affair. Instead, the court divided assets based on their origin and on willful dissipation: the company's initial capital had come from my

The next morning, the state superior court's commercial division held an emergency hearing. This wasn't the final divorce trial, but a fast-track review of the equity transfer, the temporary suspension, and the account freeze. Grayson sat at the respondent's table in a tailored charcoal suit, looking perfectly composed. His attorney opened by submitting the agreement I'd signed, arguing that the profit target hadn't been met and the share custody and personal guarantee were now in effect."The authenticity of the signature is not in dispute," my attorney said, rising. "What is in dispute is whether this agreement was built on fraud, conflicts of interest, and falsified financial data."The hint of a smile still lingered on Grayson's face. The screen lit up, displaying an easily overlooked line in the agreement's appendix: a settlement account number. My attorney pointed to Redwood Consulting's receiving account. "This entity is listed as a vendor but has no employees and no business pr

The next morning, I walked into the office as usual, only to find two private security guards posted outside the executive suite.Grayson was sitting in my chair, the newly effective equity agreement spread across my desk. He stubbed out a cigarette, his expression dark. "You've been temporarily suspended by the board. The quarterly close shows that profits missed the guarantee target. Your voting rights and share custody have been transferred to my trust.""When did the board hold a meeting?""Emergency vote overnight." He smirked. "I had enough proxy votes. You're under investigation for damaging the company's image and leaking proprietary information. Your system access is revoked until the inquiry concludes."I glanced at the insignia on the guards' uniforms. "A private company has no authority to confiscate my personal devices or prevent me from contacting my attorney. You'd better make sure they stay in the hallway and don't lay a hand on me."Grayson stepped close and lowered hi
