Chapter 2

Penulis: Tyrant’s Flower
“But there is no us anymore, Austin.”

I mumbled it out loud without realizing it.

Austin hugged me and said, “Briar, don’t say crazy things like that.

“I promised your mother I’d take care of you for the rest of your life.”

When I looked into his panicked eyes, I finally realized that it was not an illusion. Austin had indeed come to see me.

But before he could finish peeling the apple in his hand, he stood up and left again.

He was still carrying a box in his hand.

Clearly, he was in the hospital because of the contents of the box.

I was just wondering what was inside the box when he spoke first.

“Sorry, Briar. You know how stubborn Tawny is. She won’t sign the renewal agreement unless she sees the actual fetus.”

Something snapped in me.

He had actually turned our baby’s remains into a tool to please his sugar baby.

I ignored how weak my body felt and ripped the tubes off my body.

I desperately crawled to his feet.

“You already took away the baby’s right to live.

“Please, for the sake of what we used to have, spare its dignity just this one last time.”

Austin was preoccupied with the agreement that had not yet been signed. His eager footsteps did not pause for a moment.

“Briar, the living come first.

“Don’t worry. Once she’s done looking at it, I’ll send it off right away for a proper burial.”

I was shoved hard to the side. My freshly stitched wound instantly tore open, and I started bleeding all over the floor.

But that did not even come close to the pain in my heart.

Back in my hospital bed, I took out my phone and dialed that familiar number without hesitation.

“Professor, I’m confirming my spot for that overseas research project you mentioned.”

“Aren’t you about to give birth? Would your husband be okay with that?

“What about your sick mother? Can you really walk away from all of that?”

I forced myself to hold back my grief as I choked out the words, “The baby is gone. My mother will be gone soon, too.

“It’s over between Austin and me...”

After a long sigh on the other end, my mentor’s pained voice came through.

“I understand. I’ll take care of everything. You should take care of yourself.”

After hanging up, I went to handle the hospital discharge procedures. I took a cab to Austin’s house to pack my belongings.

The project would commence in about a month. It was also the same amount of time the doctors gave my mother.

Before leaving, I would stay by my mother’s bedside. I would not leave until I have seen her off peacefully.

As I approached Austin’s house, a commotion came from inside.

I quickened my pace. Through the doorway, I saw Austin kneeling in the yard in front of his father, Alexander Revelstone.

“I’m not getting up until you agree to let me marry Tawny.”

Seeing his stubbornness reminded me of the shy twenty-year-old boy from ten years ago.

Back then, he had also begged my father, “I’ll only have Briar as my wife as long as I live.

“I’ll continue asking until you agree!”

Alexander was furious. He hurled the teacup in his hand hard at the stone floor.

“It’s only been a few years, and you’ve changed your partner again?

“How long is this little fling supposed to last this time?”

“It’s for real this time.”

He squeezed Tawny’s hand, who was beside him.

“Tawny and I are never splitting up.”

“I can’t be bothered with your messy affairs!” Alexander snorted coldly and left while leaning on his cane.

Austin helped Tawny carefully up from the floor. He turned and saw me.

A flash of guilt appeared in his eyes. However, he quickly regained his composure.

“Tawny’s pregnant. You know how hard life is for an illegitimate child in this world.

“But I promise you this. Once her kid is Revelstone’s legitimate family member, I’ll divorce her and marry you again.”

Austin had forgotten something. He was an illegitimate child himself because his father had cheated.

He was only accepted in the Revelstone family after Alexander’s legitimate wife and child died in a car accident.

Unfortunately, his mother, Mary Revelstone, had already passed away. Years of hard work had taken a toll on her health.

The poor woman never had a single good day in her entire life.

Every time I thought about who was really to blame for her misfortune, I recalled Austin’s promises.

[I will never betray Briar as long as I live. If I break that promise, I hope I die a gruesome death.]

I looked at Austin. I knew his face so well, but at that moment, I did not recognize it.

“No thanks. I hope you two have a long and happy life together.”

I pulled my hand from his grip before turning around and heading upstairs to pack my belongings.

In the days that followed, I traveled between the base and the quarters every day as I usually did.Austin still followed behind me daily. At first, he tried to get close to me and even tried to speak with me.He said, “Briar, I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I’m just asking you to give me a chance to make things right.”He told me he had resigned from his position as CEO of the Revelstone Group. So, wherever I went, he would go.“Back then, I climbed to that position so that you and your mother could have a good life.“Now that I’ve lost you both, what use do I have for all that power and status?”Austin spoke like he was making some big, noble sacrifice. He acted as if he were a reformed bad boy coming to his senses. His words only made me despise him even more.“Whether you admit it or not, everything you do is for yourself. That includes trying to win me back and acting sorry.“Tawny was right. You really are a piece of trash. You’re a complete, selfish opportunist, th

Austin raised his hand slightly. Five Tibetan mastiffs that had been starved for three days were also driven into the cage. The next second, Tawny’s heart-wrenching screams echoed throughout the entire mountain hollow. She looked at the man who had once spoiled her to the heavens. He had pushed her into the abyss for the woman he had abandoned. She cried and then laughed in exasperation. She asked Austin, “Do you think doing all this would earn her forgiveness?“Too bad. She’ll never forgive you.”She looked into his ruthless gaze and said deliberately, “Because you are nothing but a total piece of garbage.”Tawny once thought that defeating Briar meant Austin would spoil her forever. She finally realized that the man before her was a classic jerk. He only ever valued what he could not have. She only hated figuring it out too late. At the same time, she felt a new respect and envy for the woman who got out in time. After dealing with Tawny, Austin went to the cemetery.Aft

The photo album fell to the floor. Austin immediately stood up and took the address from his assistant’s hand.Solstitia.It was a foreign landmass over six thousand miles away from him.“Why would she go there? She’s the one who hates the cold the most,” he murmured to himself. One year, Austin and I had gone hiking in the snowy mountains. We accidentally got separated from our guide. The two of us were trapped in the freezing snow.To keep us alive back then, I forced him to wear my cold-weather gear.I had told him, “If only one of us can make it out alive, it has to be you.”Through tears, I had told him, “Austin, I can’t imagine how I’d go on living without you.“So please forgive me for being selfish.”Did he not feel the same way? We had become two halves of one whole. One could not go on without the other. In the end, we were both rescued. Because I had been exposed to the cold for too long, my legs were frostbitten.Even to this date, I still feel sharp pains duri

Austin remained in his study at home. He sat there quietly without eating or drinking. In his hand was a photo album that contained the proof of twenty years of love between him and me.The first photo in the album showed a little girl with braids. She was feeding a beggar dressed in rags.“Mom, look! There’s a beggar kid passed out over here!”He remembered the first time we met. The corners of his lips curled into a faint smile.Twenty years ago, my mother and I went on an outing in the countryside when we found him as a little boy passed out from hunger by a ditch. He was ten years old that year. His mother had fallen into a creek while gathering herbs to sell so she could pay for his school fees. She never came back.He became a homeless child with nowhere to go. He survived on moldy bread he begged for each day. After he met my mother and me, he had a home again. The second photo was a high school graduation picture. He and I wore blue and white graduation gowns as we

When Austin saw the agreement I had signed for the overseas research program, along with the security footage of me boarding the plane and taking off, he could no longer hold himself up. He staggered and collapsed to the floor. He muttered to himself, “No. Briar wouldn’t leave me. She promised we’d never abandon each other.”He remembered the vows we had made at our wedding.“For richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, I will love you and cherish you until death do us part.”Both of us were perfectly healthy, yet I did not want him anymore. I had left him behind all alone. He knelt on the floor and cried bitterly, “Briar, I was wrong.“I’ve let you down. I’m sorry. This is all my fault.”He thought about how, ever since he met Tawny, he had been acting like he was not himself. He had completely thrown away twenty years of shared love and devotion. Worse than that, he had used my mother’s condition as leverage to force me into sharing him with another woman. He tried

Tawny had not expected me to secretly record the scene of her mocking me and play it in front of everyone. She had anticipated the wedding for so many days, but it had been completely ruined. Her carefully maintained image of an innocent and kind young woman was utterly shattered.Deep in her heart, she cursed me viciously. “Briar, you evil wench!“You’ve ruined everything for me. I hope you rot in hell!”But she forgot one thing. She had brought this upon herself. The guests all looked at her with strange expressions. They pointed at her and whispered among themselves.“So, this is the angel Austin was willing to dump his wife for. She’s turned out to be nothing more than a murderous snake.”“I’ve known it all along. A homewrecker could never be a decent person. I just didn’t think she’d be even more heartless than I imagined.”“Right. She stole another woman’s husband, then killed the child and the mother. How ruthless can you be to do something like that?”Tawny’s face turn
