Chapter 2

Penulis: Oatmeal
Charles frowned harder and started to say something else, but Selina turned away and put on a smile and struck up a conversation with someone else.

By the time she had settled the terms with Adrian and turned back, Charles was gone.

She didn't look for him, and she didn't ask. She went back to the estate alone.

She had just gotten home when she saw a box of chocolates from her favorite chocolatier on the table.

Normally you had to stand in line for two hours to get them.

Charles came down the stairs with a bodyguard carrying his suitcase ahead of him. When their eyes met, Charles looked uneasy, then forced a gentle smile. "You're back. I stood in that line just for you. Go on, try one.

"I thought you'd be upset about Susie today, so I got sharp with you. You're right, Susie's problems have nothing to do with us.

"We won't bring her up again. We'll stay out of it.

"Don't be angry."

Charles came closer, coaxing her in a soft voice.

Selina ignored it. She glanced at the bodyguard, then looked back at him and waited for the rest.

Charles's expression stiffened, and he added without prompting, "By the way, I have to go to Sicily on business. I'm leaving right now. Be good and stay home until I'm back."

Selina still said nothing.

She looked at the bodyguard again, let out a cold laugh, then walked around Charles and went upstairs.

She knew perfectly well what Charles was going to Sicily for. He was going to fight Susie's battle for her.

But none of that concerned her, and she couldn't be bothered to ask. She was leaving Southport for Northcrest to build something of her own.

After Charles left, she started settling her businesses in Southport, converting every shop she could sell into cash she kept on her.

By the time she finished, a week had gone by without her noticing. She sold the last cigar shop and came home.

The first thing she saw was the bedroom door, standing half open.

Susie sat on Selina's sofa, her face buried in her hands as she sobbed. "Thank God I have you. If it weren't for you, I never would have gotten that divorce through.

"I really never thought he'd humiliate me like that with that bitch. Thank God you got there in time."

Charles patted her shoulder and murmured, "Stop crying. You're safe now. He won't dare try anything. You'll stay at my estate and I'll put bodyguards on you."

Overcome with emotion, Susie threw herself into his arms. "Thank you."

A look of satisfaction Selina had never seen before crossed Charles's face. He smiled and did not push Susie away. "You're Selina's sister, which makes you mine too. If I didn't help you, she'd be upset with me.

"Don't think about it anymore. Just stay here."

Selina looked in through the crack in the door, her chest rising and falling.

She had known it would be exactly like this, but seeing it with her own eyes still left a weight on her chest.

She and Charles had grown up together and had been a couple since they came of age. Because she was so good to Susie, she couldn't even bear to leave Susie home alone when they went on dates.

Charles was always jealous, always complaining, and at one point he had been openly hostile toward Susie.

In her last life Susie moved into their estate after the divorce.

At first Charles still complained to her about the inconvenience and said behind Susie's back that they should send her out to the country house.

But within a month he was volunteering to keep Susie company at home while Selina was busy with work, taking Susie out to cheer her up.

The sight had made Selina feel warm and happy, and she had laughed and asked Charles what had gotten into him.

Charles stroked her hair and said, "You're busy with work. She's your sister, so she's my sister too. If I take some of the weight off you, you'll have more time to rest."

Selina never thought twice about it. She was touched by how considerate Charles was.

It had never occurred to her that his early dislike had only been cover for the fact that he had started to want Susie.

That tenderness, that warmth, had become a blade in the end and stabbed straight into her.

She swallowed the nausea rising in her chest.

That same day she went back to the grounds to pack. And again, she used the side gate. But she had barely stepped out of the car when a figure rushed at her and grabbed her wrist, stopping her short.Selina's head snapped around.Charles stood before her looking ruined, his suit torn and his uncut hair a tangled mess."Selina, will you just let me explain?"You won't even give me a chance to explain, over Susie? After all the years we've been together!"There was no sympathy in Selina, only endless disgust."Enough!"Charles was so startled by the shout that he froze.Selina had never lost her temper at him like that. Even in their worst arguments, she had never let it get away from her."Selina, don't be like this, we can talk."I've been waiting out here over a month. Can you really be that hard?"Selina threw his hand off in distaste."Everything you've done only makes me hate you more."Did I make you wait out here for a month? Why should I be soft about it? What are you to me?"Ch

Selina simply felt that nothing was going her way today.Seeing how cold she was, Charles softened all over and lowered his head. "I know everything that happened."I know all of it was Susie. It was her, and if she hadn't called me, I never would have gone to Sicily to bring her back."I've already thrown her out. There will be nothing between us ever again. I was only good to her because she was your sister. I was thinking of you."I'm begging you, stop being angry with me, please?"Selina found the whole speech nauseating, and said coldly, "We're divorced. Please stop bothering me."You've seen for yourself now, so let me be clear. I don't want anything to do with you and I don't want to see you again."Tears filled Charles's eyes. He reached for Selina, but she slipped away from him with ease. His hand hung in the air, unsure what to do with itself."I know you won't forgive me easily, but you must still love me. I know I shouldn't have brought Susie back."There will never be a ne

"Let him." Selina had been letting it go, little by little.Hearing Charles's name did nothing to her anymore."Say the word and I'll deal with it for you."Selina pressed her lips together, more moved than she wanted to be.Back when she was with Charles, Charles never discussed a single thing with her, never asked what she thought. There had been a client once who said the wrong thing to her at a party.Afterward Charles hired a hitman and had the man dealt with right in the street, and it was nearly traced back to them, which would have been a disaster. She had been the one to step in and clean it up and keep it quiet. She had told him afterward that he was too reckless, and he thought it proved he loved her and wanted to protect her, and saw nothing wrong with what he'd done. And somehow, back then, Selina had let that argument convince her.Strange, looking back on it.Coming out of the office, Selina felt unsettled. To take the edge off it, she threw herself into work.Every day

It took Selina less than half a month to learn the hunting grounds inside out.The Winthrop family dealt with old money and politicians because the hunting grounds were ideal places to discuss business.More than a dozen hunting grounds held tens of thousands of wild animals.Selina spent most of her time walking the grounds every day, and Adrian was at her side nearly every one of them.Because of that welcome party, everyone in the family knew who she was.In her last life, she had given up this chance for Susie. This time, she meant to hold on with both hands, and that determination brought pressure with it.Selina moved out of Adrian's estate. She took one of the cabins on the grounds. She could get used to living anywhere, but Adrian thought it was beneath her.So he had the cabin rebuilt into a large house of her own, with a garden laid out in front. He even thought to hire a gardener to keep it up for her.Selina said, "You really didn't have to go to the trouble. I've slept und

Charles stood there, stunned.Every word of Susie's accusation was correct. He was the one who had disregarded Selina's feelings first and gone to Sicily on his own authority to bring Susie back to the estate. He was the one who had held Susie in the bedroom. If he had listened to Selina, or cared at all how she felt, it would never have come to this between them. They wouldn't be divorced.Charles crouched on the floor and broke down sobbing. It was the first time Susie had seen him like this, and something like pity rose in her. She walked over slowly and put her arms around him."Don't be like this. Selina's gone, and she isn't coming back. I really do love you. We'll have a good life together."Whatever she could give you, I can give you too."Susie brought her face close to his.Charles bit down on his lip and swallowed the tears back. He looked up at Susie, and the pain in him only deepened. Then all at once he pushed her away, stood up, and left without a word. When he returned

The circle opened, and Susie looked up. Her eyes met Charles's.He opened his mouth to speak, but Susie looked away and smiled at the partners. "If everyone's agreed, come into the office and we'll sign."The partners laughed and crowded toward his office one after another, satisfaction all over their faces.Charles stood frozen. Susie having solved the problem gave him no pleasure at all. If anything, he had hoped to see Selina when the crowd parted.Susie said, smiling, "I got it handled, so relax. And they're locked in with us for the next five years.""How did you do it?" Charles asked absently."You'll find out." Susie winked at him.Charles did not press her and changed the subject. "It isn't safe for you at the estate now. I'm busy, and I can't get free to protect you, so I'll have someone find you a house out in the country. You'll be safer there."Susie's hand stopped in midair. When she raised her eyes again, she said, "All right. I'll come back once Bruno is gone."Charles d
