Chapter 3

Author: Mimi Winterrest
The operating theater doors slowly swung open. I stopped at the entrance for one final check.

The doctor looked at me. He seemed hesitant to say something.

“Ms. Oakley, the anesthesiologist is ready.

“But…”

“But what?”

“Your blood test report shows that the venom has already caused severe clotting problems and kidney damage. This is a high-risk surgery, and you’ll need dialysis for an extended period afterward.

“If we can’t get the infection under control, you may also need a second debridement.”

I nodded calmly.

“I understand.”

The doctor looked surprised.

“Would you like to wait a little longer for your family?”

“No.”

I took the pen and signed my name on the surgical consent form.

The nurse pushed my bed farther inside.

The operating room doors slowly closed behind me.

Just before the anesthesia took effect, I vaguely heard my phone vibrating.

The nurse brought it over to me.

It was a message from Tommy.

[The helicopter has taken off. It should be there in about forty minutes.]

[Diana, don’t be afraid. I’m here.]

I stared at those few lines for a long time.

All along, the people who would rush over to me when I needed them most had always been right there.

It was just that five years ago, I pushed them all away for Gary.

The anesthesia slowly entered my bloodstream.

Just before my consciousness slipped away, I remembered our wedding day.

Gary had held my hand and sworn in front of all our family and friends, “Diana, you’ll be my only wife for the rest of my life.

“Through poverty and wealth, in sickness and in health, I’ll stay by your side for the rest of our lives.”

My father sat at the head table with an indifferent expression. He did not offer a single word of congratulations.

Tommy did not show up at all.

After the wedding, I asked Gary, “Do you think you’ll ever regret marrying me someday?”

He lowered his head and kissed my forehead.

“The only thing I’ll ever regret is not meeting you sooner.”

Back then, I believed him without a doubt.

When Cindy returned to the country, I kept convincing myself that she was just someone from his past while I was his wife.

Apparently, even a wife could be deemed replaceable someday.

The surgery lasted six hours.

When I woke up, it was already late at night.

A sharp pain shot through the place where my right leg had been, as if countless knives were twisting through the bone.

I instinctively tried to lift my leg, only to find an empty stretch of blankets beneath my hand.

At that moment, I finally understood with absolute clarity that my right leg was gone.

The hospital room was silent.

Gary did not come.

A bouquet of white lilies sat on the bedside table. There was only one sentence on the card.

[Get some rest and don’t overthink things.]

Gary had written that.

As I stared at the card, I found the whole thing absurd.

I lost a leg, but he did not stay outside the operating theater.

I barely escaped death, but all he did was have someone deliver a bouquet of flowers.

Meanwhile, Cindy had only suffered a snake bite. Yet she received the antidote, the stretcher, the satellite phone, and Gary’s company overnight.

When the nurse came in to change my dressing, she could not help whispering, “Ms. Oakley, Mr. Sapien really cares about Ms. Pepper.

“I heard she isn’t feeling well again because of her heart condition. Mr. Sapien has been by her side the whole time. He hasn’t even eaten yet.

“Are you two having problems?”

Partway through saying that, she realized she had said too much. Then, she awkwardly kept quiet.

I said calmly, “No. We won’t be husband and wife for much longer.”

The nurse was puzzled for a moment. She did not dare to ask anything else.

I picked up my phone and sent Tommy one last message.

[Is the divorce agreement ready?]

Tommy replied almost instantly.

[It’s ready. I’ve frozen all of Sapien Hospital’s shares and investment funds.]

[I’ll come to the hospital to pick you up tomorrow.]

I stared at the word [tomorrow] on the screen before slowly closing my eyes.

The case against Cindy was resolved soon afterward.Cindy had not only falsified medical records and spent years exploiting Gary’s guilt to receive special treatment, but she was also suspected of tampering with the mountain rescue information.Even worse, she had obtained an unapproved antidote through a private clinic and had deliberately released a particularly venomous snake near the campsite before the hike.Cindy knew there were snakes in the mountains. She also knew that both Gary and I exercised regularly, but I was the one who went hiking regularly.Cindy had looked into my medical history beforehand and knew I had no heart or lung problems. She had even anticipated exactly how Gary would react. As for Gary, he was under investigation. The hospital director slid a resignation letter across the desk to him.“Dr. Sapien, the regulators confirmed that there were violations in the procurement records for the antidote.“While there’s currently no evidence that you were in

Gary’s hand slowly fell to his side.He wanted to explain himself, but he knew there was nothing he could say that would make a difference. Outside the ward, I heard Tommy talking to the lawyers.“We’ve filed the divorce lawsuit and completed Oakley Group’s withdrawal procedures from Sapien Hospital.“Also, we need to reassess ownership of the hospital’s core equipment purchased with Oakley Group’s funds.”Gary instantly looked up.“Diana, do you seriously want to take back all the medical equipment?”Tommy answered coldly, “That medical equipment belongs to Oakley Group in the first place. We’re just lending the equipment to the hospitals.”Gary turned to me.“Do you realize how many patients will be affected if you take away the medical equipment?”“I do.”“Then, why are you still going to do it?”“Of course, I have to,” I answered calmly. “Gary, you can go on being a doctor who saves lives.“But you can’t use my family’s money to save everyone else while leaving my lif

Just then, the sound of sirens was heard outside the hospital.Several police officers walked into the ward.“Cindy Pepper, you’ve been reported for allegedly and deliberately damaging emergency communication equipment, falsifying medical information, and causing intentional harm.“Please come with us.”The color drained from Cindy’s face. She turned to Gary as if he were the last person who could save her.“Gary, please help me. You said you’d protect me no matter what happened.”Gary stood there motionless. After a long silence, he said quietly, “Cindy, stop lying to me.”As the police led Cindy away, she passed by my bed.She stopped. Then, she lowered her voice to a mocking laugh.“Diana, do you seriously think getting a divorce means you’ve won? Gary still loves me more than anyone. Even if I go to prison, he’ll never forget me.”I looked at her and answered softly, “Then, I hope the two of you stay in love forever—one of you behind bars, the other trapped in regret.”

“Dr. Sapien,” Tommy said calmly. “If Ms. Pepper really has a serious heart condition, let someone examine her right now.“If she doesn’t, then we need to talk about her falsifying medical records, interfering with the rescue operation, and deliberately concealing her condition.”Cindy instantly looked up at him.“You can’t slander me like this!”Tommy smiled.“Slander?”He spread another set of documents across the table.“These are the communication records provided by the hiking company from that day.“After the snake bit you, a message was sent to the rescue team from your phone.”Gary immediately narrowed his eyes. “What message?”Tommy slid the record across the table toward him.[The injured Diana has already been taken to the north slope by someone from the group. Please prioritize rescuing Cindy.]Gary stared at the message. His face slowly drained of color.“I didn’t send that message.”Tommy looked up at Cindy.“But it was sent from your phone.”Pin-drop silen

I was still figuring the whole thing out when someone abruptly swung open the door to the ward.Cindy walked in on a crutch. She wore a loose white dress. Her face was pale, and she wore a diamond bracelet that Gary had given her.“Diana.”She stood at the doorway as if she had summoned every ounce of courage to come here.“Can I talk to you?”Tommy answered coldly, “No.”Her eyes instantly reddened from tears.“Tommy, I just want to apologize to her.”“You don’t get to call me that,” Tommy said, cutting her off without hesitation. “Get out!”Cindy bit her lip as tears silently rolled down her cheeks.“I know you hate me because of what happened with the antidote, but I truly never thought things would end up like this.“Gary told me you were in great physical condition and would definitely make it until the rescue team arrived.“If I had known you would end up losing your leg, I never would have…”“Wouldn’t have what?”I stared at her.“Wouldn’t have taken the antidote

The room fell completely silent.A moment later, Gary turned around and left the ward.He stopped just as he reached the door.“Diana, once you’ve calmed down, I’ll come back to see you.”I did not answer him.Tommy watched him leave and said coldly, “You’d better not come back.”Gary did not look back. The moment the door closed behind him, I finally felt the weight that had been pressing on my chest for five years begin to lift, little by little. However, I never expected what came next. The real trouble was only about to begin.Early the next morning, news of Sapien Hospital’s major funding crisis made headlines in financial news.Oakley Group withdrew all of its investments from the hospital and froze the related shares.Sapien Hospital had to put the expansion projects at three of its branches on hold. They were forced to halt several major purchases of high-end medical equipment. At a press conference, the reporters crowded around Gary. They thrust their microphones
