Chapter 3

Penulis: Lennox Chase
The alarm on Candy's phone suddenly went off.

Usually, she would have been awake at this hour and started chipping away at her exercises. As a senior, her schedule was very hectic.

I wiped away my tears before grabbing the phone to turn off the alarm.

Immediately after I had done so, the display switched to the call logs.

The first few logs on the list were calls made to Julius, with the earliest one timed at six o’clock in the morning.

The officer mentioned that the scumbag had barged into Candy's hotel room at six o'clock.

That meant Candy had called Julius for help.

How did things still turn out like this?

I clicked the log and pulled my phone out so I could record it.

Candy's voice was filled with fear. “Dad, where are you? Some old guy just barged into the room. He says you were the one who told him to come here.”

Julius' voice was filled with indifference. “Yes, I did. Just stay in the hotel. He’ll keep you safe.”

Candy grew frantic at this point. It sounded like she was going to cry.

“But I need to go to the physics competition today.”

“Ronald has always dreamed of attending Prirose University. You shouldn’t take that away from him.

“Just stay put, or else that man will beat you to put you in your place!”

Then, the call ended.

It was followed by several other calls, all of which were filled with the harrowing cries of Candy pleading with Julius for help.

The entire time, he remained indifferent as ever. He even accused her of putting on an act to deceive him.

After listening to all the recordings, I held a hand over my mouth and could not stop my body from trembling.

As it turned out, it was Julius who let that disgusting man into the hotel room so he would keep an eye on Candy.

He did it to prevent Candy from joining the competition and claiming the prize—an admission to Prirose University.

Only one person could be admitted into the university.

Julius had chosen to help Ronald and willingly sabotaged Candy’s future.

I could not imagine the sheer desperation that must have filled Candy at that moment.

Completely furious, I decided to call Julius.

This time, the call was connected on the first try. However, his ephemeral lover, Brienne Leigh, answered the call.

“Hey, Julius is picking a present for Ronald. Did you need something?”

“Tell him to answer the call!”

I was so angry that my teeth were chattering.

Candy was dead, but he was still busy choosing a present for Ronald!

“Have I not made myself clear enough? Julius is busy picking a present for Ronald! Why don’t you wait until he gets home to talk to him?”

With that, she hung up without giving me time to respond.

I was so furious that I almost flung my phone to the ground.

A pair of cunning wenches!

Just they wait. I’ll make them pay for my daughter's death!

Since I was a lawyer, I was aware that recordings could not serve as substantial evidence.

Besides, that scum on the phone never explicitly stated that he worked for Julius.

I had to gather more evidence before calling the police.

The next day, Candy's teacher called me to tell me that some of Candy’s belongings were still at the school.

Since it was Monday, I knew Julius would have to give a routine speech for the weekly flag-bearing ceremony.

So, I drew up a plan.

After collecting Candy's belongings, I noticed the flag-bearing ceremony commencing in the field.

Julius was giving a speech on stage, pouring his heart into it.

“I would like to congratulate one of our senior students, Ronald Leigh, from class one! He won first place in the physics competition yesterday and is the only student in our school who has been admitted to Prirose University!

“There is no such thing as luck. If you want something, you have to put in the work.

“Fellow students, I hope you all will be inspired and work harder!”

I clenched my fists. What a ridiculous speech.

Ronald had stolen it from Candy! It was completely shameless to attribute it to hard work!

It was then the two reporters I had contacted arrived on the scene. They were my former clients that I’d helped win a lawsuit and were more than eager to help me.

After I gestured to them, they immediately rushed up to the stage.

“Mr. Stoppard, we heard news that your daughter Candy Stoppard was also supposed to participate in the competition yesterday. She was an exemplary student, but had died in a tragic accident in a hotel last night. Do you have anything to say about what happened?”

Upon hearing this, Julius cringed and suddenly turned stiff. A sheet of gloom came upon his face.

“You… What did you say?”

Due to the intense mounting pressure, the competition organizer had to step forward to explain. He claimed Julius had given him a handsome bribe to tamper with the results before giving his word that the competition would be redone on a scheduled date.Prirose University had also withdrawn the offer letter they had given to Ronald.Meanwhile, Julius’ reputation was in complete ruin. The high school operations had been suspended and put under investigation.I’m sure he never imagined his life would be ruined because he tried to help Brienne and Roland. However, I could not understand his reasoning behind this. Was it worth helping an outsider over his daughter? Why would he go to such lengths for them? That evening, Brienne started a livestream. Her eyes staring into the camera were puffy and red.“It was Julius who forced me into this. I never meant to be a home wrecker.“Three years ago, he contacted me and said he wanted to rekindle an old flame. When I turned him down, h

Julius and the others were taken to the police station. After the police verified the facts with the degenerate who killed Candy, they detained Julius. That man had admitted it was Julius who paid him to watch over Candy. Brienne, on the other hand, was only penalized with a fine. Then she was allowed to leave.I knew she would be released. That was why I made a point of playing the video on the projector screen in the cafe.Even if I could not put her in prison, I was not going to let her and Ronald get away scot-free.I wanted them to be humiliated!Sure enough, the video in the cafe went viral online the very next day.Everyone rained insults on Brienne after watching the video. Some even managed to dox her and find out where she lived. Even after getting the evidence, I put off contacting the police. This was not enough. This amount of evidence was only going to put Julius in jail at most.Brienne and her son were still going to get away with it.I had to collect more evidence.Around the evening, I received a text from Julius.[Dear, I took some money from the safe. We need some funds to sort out some cash flow issues at the school.][Don't worry. I will get the money back before you know it. You must be depressed about Candy’s passing. You should prioritize resting at home.]I found the text absurd. How have I never realized how much of a scumbag Julius was?Did he truly assume I would not know he had taken the money so he could pay off Brienne’s debt?I’ll show him! After Candy's funeral, I wanted to contact Julius to continue the next phase of my plan.To my surprise, he had turned his phone off. What's more, public sentiment online had swung the other way.During Candy's funeral yesterday, someone recorded our conversation and posted it online.Brienne and Ronald were seen pitifully justifying their actions to me.I shot hateful glares at them in return and told them to drop the pathetic act. The video ended after that. The people online took it at face value and accused me of being unnecessarily cruel to them. They were sure that I was in the wrong.Soon, they were all defending Brienne and Julius. It was only then that I realized I had fallen for their trap yesterday.Brienne and Ronald intentionally played the victim to draw a reaction out of me and film it.This explained why Julius did not answer my calls. “My dear… please let me explain. I never meant to hurt Candy.“Yes! I was the one who sent the man to keep an eye on her, but I didn’t think he would do something so vile to her!“I even made a point of instructing him to let Candy go after the competition ends.“Candy is my daughter. How could I ever have the heart to hurt her?”“Julius, I don’t want to listen to your explanation. I want a divorce.”He must not have been expecting the woman who once loved him so dearly to suggest a divorce, of all things. It caught him so off-guard that he cried.“I don't want to get divorced.”I fell silent before stating, “Alright, we don't have to get a divorce. But only if you attend our daughter's funeral tomorrow.”With that, I hung up on him.The two reporters approached me. “Don’t worry, Mr. Stoppard is going to end up on the headlines tomorrow morning.”With that, the first phase of my plans has been completed.I had to leverage public opinion against Julius to collect evidence.
