Reid's POV

The lights hummed once, twice, and steadied into a flat white glow that made everything in the room look flatter than it should have.

The man in the doorway had changed. Thinner than I remembered, cheekbones sharper, like the last eleven months had taken something from him and never given it back. A scar cut through one eyebrow that hadn't been there the last time I'd seen his face — at a podium, delivering the eulogy I'd written for him in a fog I still couldn't fully remember. But

Reid's POVI waited by the car with the engine off.I'd told myself I would give them room. What I actually did was watch two shapes through a windshield fifty feet away and try to guess, from the angle of a head, whether what was being said was going well. The lake road was black on both sides. Water on one, trees on the other. Nothing moved except the thin line of light where Blair's dome lamp caught the edge of a cedar box.I heard the car before I saw it.It came up from the water side, no headlights until it rounded the last bend. Then two beams swung across the trees, and I had turned mine off before I'd decided to. The car slowed at the pull-off. Dark sedan. One shape behind the wheel. It idled long enough for me to count six. Then it rolled on past and its taillights dropped away toward the trees.I couldn't have told you whose car it was. I couldn't have told you it wasn't.I was still watching the road when Audrey's door opened. She got out first. Blair followed and stood be

Audrey's POVI answered on the fourth ring. Not because I'd decided to. Because if I let it go to voicemail, I would spend the rest of my life wondering what she would have said."Audrey."Blair's voice was small and flat. It was the voice she used when she'd cried long enough to run out of it. Behind her I could hear wind, and the tick of an engine cooling."It's one in the morning," I said."I know what time it is. I've been sitting in this car for two hours trying to decide whether to call you."Across the table, Thane had gone gray. Vivienne was watching my face as though she meant to read it. I turned toward the window so I wouldn't have to look at either of them."Where are you?""Are you alone?""No."A pause. "Is Reid there?""Yes.""Is anyone else?"I glanced back. Thane's thumb was still moving along the edge of the table. "Yes.""Okay." I heard her swallow. "Okay. I found my mother's cedar box tonight."Nobody in the room moved. I felt it anyway, the way you feel a door ope

Reid's POVThane didn't say her name. He didn't have to."Blair's mother," Audrey said.It wasn't a question. She'd gone very still beside me, both hands flat on the table. I knew that posture. It was how she sat in a boardroom when the numbers were worse than she'd been told."Letters," Thane said. "Before the wedding, and for years after. I wrote them the old way because that was how I'd always written to her. Nobody else ever saw that hand.""Years after," I said. "You were married.""I was married." He looked at Audrey. "I never wrote a line I'd have been ashamed for your mother to read. That's not much of a defense. It's the only one I have.""No," Audrey said. "It isn't."She didn't raise her voice. I'd have preferred it if she had. She took her hand off the table and put it in her lap, where I couldn't see it."Where are they now?" Vivienne asked."She kept them in a cedar box in her closet. I asked her once to burn them. She said she'd sooner burn herself." Thane rubbed his th

Audrey's POV My father held the slip of paper the way you hold something that might still be hot. "Read it again," Vivienne said. "Slowly. Look at the notary stamp." He did. I leaned over his arm and saw a round seal, smudged, with a name I didn't know and a date in the spring of that year. "Harold Pruitt," Vivienne said. "He died on the ninth of April. The date on that page is the twentieth." "He could have stamped it early," Reid said. "Then it wouldn't carry a date after his funeral." She sat down across from us. "It took me nine years to find the county clerk who kept Pruitt's commission book. It took twenty more to get someone to let me photograph it. The last entry is the eighth. After that, nothing. Whoever made this used a dead man's seal and hoped nobody would check." "Twenty years," I said. "I had time. I didn't have much else." She said it flatly, without self-pity. "I wasn't trying to clear your father, Audrey. I didn't know he was your father. I was trying to fin

Chapter 59 Reid's POV The box didn't ask to be opened. It sat on the table like it had been waiting longer than I'd been alive, and none of us moved toward it. "You said you've been collecting this for thirty years," I said. "Start there." "I said I'd been collecting what you'd need." Vivienne pulled a chair back. "Not everything. You collect what you can carry and you bury the rest, and you hope the burying holds." "It didn't hold," Thane said. "That's why we're in your kitchen at one in the morning." "Don't lecture me about burying things, Thane. You buried a woman. I buried a brother." The room went still. "Our mother," I said. "You said I have her eyes." "You do." Vivienne looked at me, softer now. "Her name was Elise. She died when you were four days old. Not in childbirth. After. There was a fire at the house where she was staying, past the county line, and everyone who could have told the story differently died with her." "Except you," Audrey said. "Except me. I was

  • My Husband Married Me For Revenge    Chapter 58

Audrey's POV The lake house sat at the end of a road that hadn't seen a grader in years, gravel giving way to dirt, dirt giving way to grass grown up through the ruts. My father drove, which surprised me, until I understood he didn't trust either of us to find it in the dark and didn't trust himself to stay behind while we tried. Nobody spoke for the better part of the hour. Reid sat beside me in the back seat with the folded birth record still in his jacket pocket, and every few minutes I felt him reach up and touch it through the fabric, like he needed to keep confirming it hadn't disappeared, hadn't turned out to be some elaborate cruelty invented for one long, terrible night. "You don't have to talk," I said finally, quiet enough that my father couldn't hear over the engine. "But you don't have to not talk either. Whatever you're doing right now, I'm here for it." "I keep trying to remember if I ever looked like him," Reid said. "My father. The one who raised me. I used to th
