Audrey's POV

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing, and by the time morning came, I gave up trying altogether. With a sigh, I sat up in bed, only to notice several large gift boxes arranged neatly on the couch by the window.

Frowning, I climbed out of bed and walked over. The first box held a stunning black evening gown. The second contained a pair of heels, while the third revealed a diamond necklace with matching earrings.

There was also a designer handbag I had admired months ago, a bouquet of white roses, and finally, a small envelope. My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Happy Anniversary, Audy. Meet me tonight. Presidential Suite, 7:00 PM.

— Reid

I stared at the note for a long time. The presidential suite. The same hotel. The same place. My chest tightened.

Was this some kind of joke? Or had I misunderstood what I saw yesterday?

I hated myself for even thinking that, but doubt crept in anyway. This was Reid, the man I had loved for most of my life. He knew my favorite flowers and still left handwritten notes after three years of marriage.

Maybe there was an explanation. Maybe there was something I didn't know.

No! I wasn't going to make excuses for him. If he had an explanation, he would give it tonight. If he didn't...

Then I would finally know the truth.

By four o'clock, I started getting ready with the help of Ms. Patricia, our head housekeeper.

"Miss Audrey, are you sure you're okay?" she asked as she watched me fasten the necklace around my neck.

"I'm fine," I replied, meeting my reflection in the mirror.

"You haven't smiled once since I came in," she pointed out, folding her arms.

"There," I said, forcing a smile that felt anything but real.

"That one doesn't count," she replied, making me laugh despite myself.

"You worry too much," I said, shaking my head.

"I work for you. It's part of my job," she answered before stepping back to admire the gown. "Mr. Reid has excellent taste."

"Yes, he always has," I murmured, my stomach twisting at the mention of his name.

She tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear before smiling gently.

"Whatever is bothering you, I hope tonight fixes it."

"I hope so too," I whispered, glancing at the anniversary note resting on the dresser.

The drive downtown was unusually quiet. At exactly seven o'clock, I stepped out of the elevator. The hallway was silent, but my heartbeat wasn't.

The suite door stood slightly open, and soft music drifted into the hallway. Taking a deep breath, I pushed it open. For a moment, I forgot why I had come.

Candles glowed around the room, flowers filled every corner, and dozens of photographs covered the walls. Pictures from our childhood, school days, college, our wedding, birthdays, vacations, and anniversaries told the story of our entire lives together.

My eyes burned. Then I remembered the video. I remembered Blair. The warmth disappeared instantly.

"You're here," Reid said as I looked up to find him standing beside the dining table.

"Yes," I replied quietly, refusing to move closer.

"You look beautiful," he said, his eyes lingering on me.

"Thank you," I answered without smiling.

"The dress looks perfect on you."

"You picked it," I reminded him.

"I did," he replied with a faint smile.

The old me would have crossed the room and wrapped my arms around him.

Tonight, I stayed exactly where I was. A flicker of confusion crossed his face before he gestured toward the table.

"Come sit," he said, pulling out a chair for me.

Dinner felt strangely normal. We talked, ate, and even laughed once or twice, which somehow made everything worse because Reid acted exactly like the man I had always known.

At one point, he picked up an old photograph of us at fourteen, covered in mud and grinning like idiots.

"Do you remember this?" he asked, smiling at the picture.

"You pushed me into the lake," I replied, folding my arms.

"I slipped," he argued.

"You pushed me."

"You have no proof," he said with a grin.

"Because my shoes were ruined," I reminded him after he mentioned how I had cried that day.

"And then you stole mine."

"They were compensation," I replied, almost smiling.

"You've always been impossible," he said, his eyes softening.

The words hurt more than they should have because everything felt so real.

If this was real... Then why Blair? I couldn't take it anymore. The pressure inside me finally broke.

"Why did you do it?" I asked, staring straight at him.

"What?" he asked, genuinely confused.

"Why did you cheat on me?" I demanded, refusing to look away.

"What are you talking about?" he asked, frowning.

"Don't pretend," I said as I opened the video on my phone and slid it across the table.

Neither of us spoke while it played. When it ended, Reid looked at the screen, then at me. His face remained completely unreadable.

"I see," he said at last, leaning back with a slow sigh.

"Say something," I whispered, my heart pounding.

"What exactly would you like me to say?" he asked calmly.

"Tell me I'm wrong," I pleaded, gripping the edge of the table.

He said nothing.

"Tell me there's an explanation," I continued, my voice shaking.

Silence.

"Tell me she means nothing."

"There is no point lying about it," he finally said, meeting my eyes.

The room spun.

"What?" I whispered, barely able to breathe.

"I have a mistress," he admitted without hesitation.

I stared at him, waiting for an apology, an excuse, anything.

Nothing came.

"That's it?" I asked, unable to believe what I was hearing.

"What else would you like me to say?" he replied, his expression unreadable.

"You betrayed me." I reminded him.

"I know."

"You cheated on me."

"Yes."

"And you're sitting there acting like it's nothing?" I asked, my voice breaking.

"I never intended to hide it forever," he admitted, looking away briefly.

"What?"

"I always knew this conversation would happen eventually." He replied nonchalantly.

I searched his face, hoping to find the man I married. Instead, I found a stranger.

"Who are you?" I whispered.

"I fell in love with someone else," he answered quietly.

My breath caught.

"You love her?" I asked, tears filling my eyes.

"Yes," he replied without hesitation.

That single word hurt more than discovering the affair because I could see the truth in his eyes. A tear slid down my cheek.

"Did you ever really love me?" I asked softly.

"I did," he answered after a long pause.

The past tense shattered something inside me.

"Then why?" I whispered. "Why would you do this to us?"

Silence settled between us as the candles flickered and the photographs surrounding us became cruel reminders of a life that no longer existed.

I looked at the man I had loved since childhood, the man I had trusted with my heart, my future, and everything I had.

"Tell me the truth, Reid," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

For a long moment, he simply looked at me before finally speaking.

"I stopped loving you the day your father killed my father."

Reid's POVThane didn't say her name. He didn't have to."Blair's mother," Audrey said.It wasn't a question. She'd gone very still beside me, both hands flat on the table. I knew that posture. It was how she sat in a boardroom when the numbers were worse than she'd been told."Letters," Thane said. "Before the wedding, and for years after. I wrote them the old way because that was how I'd always written to her. Nobody else ever saw that hand.""Years after," I said. "You were married.""I was married." He looked at Audrey. "I never wrote a line I'd have been ashamed for your mother to read. That's not much of a defense. It's the only one I have.""No," Audrey said. "It isn't."She didn't raise her voice. I'd have preferred it if she had. She took her hand off the table and put it in her lap, where I couldn't see it."Where are they now?" Vivienne asked."She kept them in a cedar box in her closet. I asked her once to burn them. She said she'd sooner burn herself." Thane rubbed his th

Audrey's POV My father held the slip of paper the way you hold something that might still be hot. "Read it again," Vivienne said. "Slowly. Look at the notary stamp." He did. I leaned over his arm and saw a round seal, smudged, with a name I didn't know and a date in the spring of that year. "Harold Pruitt," Vivienne said. "He died on the ninth of April. The date on that page is the twentieth." "He could have stamped it early," Reid said. "Then it wouldn't carry a date after his funeral." She sat down across from us. "It took me nine years to find the county clerk who kept Pruitt's commission book. It took twenty more to get someone to let me photograph it. The last entry is the eighth. After that, nothing. Whoever made this used a dead man's seal and hoped nobody would check." "Twenty years," I said. "I had time. I didn't have much else." She said it flatly, without self-pity. "I wasn't trying to clear your father, Audrey. I didn't know he was your father. I was trying to fin

"You said you've been collecting this for thirty years," I said. "Start there." "I said I'd been collecting what you'd need." Vivienne pulled a chair back. "Not everything. You collect what you can carry and you bury the rest, and you hope the burying holds." "It didn't hold," Thane said. "That's why we're in your kitchen at one in the morning." "Don't lecture me about burying things, Thane. You buried a woman. I buried a brother." The room went still. "Our mother," I said. "You said I have her eyes." "You do." Vivienne looked at me, softer now. "Her name was Elise. She died when you were four days old. Not in childbirth. After. There was a fire at the house where she was staying, past the county line, and everyone who could have told the story differently died with her." "Except you," Audrey said. "Except me. I was

Audrey's POV The lake house sat at the end of a road that hadn't seen a grader in years, gravel giving way to dirt, dirt giving way to grass grown up through the ruts. My father drove, which surprised me, until I understood he didn't trust either of us to find it in the dark and didn't trust himself to stay behind while we tried. Nobody spoke for the better part of the hour. Reid sat beside me in the back seat with the folded birth record still in his jacket pocket, and every few minutes I felt him reach up and touch it through the fabric, like he needed to keep confirming it hadn't disappeared, hadn't turned out to be some elaborate cruelty invented for one long, terrible night. "You don't have to talk," I said finally, quiet enough that my father couldn't hear over the engine. "But you don't have to not talk either. Whatever you're doing right now, I'm here for it." "I keep trying to remember if I ever looked like him," Reid said. "My father. The one who raised me. I used to th

Audrey's POVFor a moment none of us breathed."That's not funny," Reid said. Quiet. Too quiet, the way he got when something had actually landed instead of just glanced off him."I'm not laughing." My father sank back into the chair he'd knocked over earlier, righted now, though he looked like it might tip again under him at any second. "I'm not saying it to hurt you. I'm saying it because I think it might finally be time someone did.""Explain it," I said. "Now. All of it, in order, the way you should have thirty years ago."He pressed both hands flat against the desk like he needed the wood to hold him up."The summer before you were born," he started, looking at me but clearly speaking past me, into the past. "I told you there was a girl at the lake house. Vivienne's mother. What I didn't tell you is that she wasn't the only complication that year." His eyes finally lifted to Reid. "Your father and I built something together before either of us built anything with our wives. Befor

  • My Husband Married Me For Revenge    Chapter 55

Reid's POV Nobody moved for three rings. Thane stood frozen by the toppled chair, staring toward the staircase like the sound itself might come down the steps and get a good look at him before he had to answer for anything. Audrey had gone rigid beside me, her hand tightening in mine hard enough that I felt her pulse in it. "Whose line is that," I said. "My study." His voice had lost whatever composure the last ten minutes had cost him. "A direct number. Unlisted. It was disconnected eleven years ago. I had it disconnected myself." "Then someone reconnected it." He didn't answer that. He was already moving, faster than I'd have credited a man his age with, and we followed him up the stairs two at a time, the ringing growing louder the closer we got, insistent, patient, like whoever was on the other end had all night and knew it. The study door was open. It was never open. Thane kept it locked even when the house was empty, I'd learned that much just from the number of times Au
