Chapter 4

Author: Ivy Wordsworth
When I woke up again, my head was wrapped in thick bandages. The pain was so intense, it made the room spin.

Sitting by my bed, watching me intently, was a young, sharp-looking man.

The moment Dad came in and saw him, he charged over like he'd seen his enemy. "So it's you, huh? You're the guy who wrecked their marriage! How dare you show your face here!"

As he shouted, he tried to grab Joel Huffman by the collar. Joel sidestepped with a frown.

"Dad, he's my assistant."

"Sir, I'm Ms. Patton's assistant."

We spoke at the same time.

Right then, Andrew and Helen walked in. The moment Andrew saw Joel, he went pale, and he swayed slightly.

Helen immediately steadied him, then shot me a hostile glare. "Tessa, you've gone too far! Dr. Rollins has worn himself down for you, yet you bring your side piece here?"

Andrew started shedding tears as he looked on. The last time I saw him cry like that was over ten years ago, back when we were in college.

Back then, the person Andrew loved was Jennifer Sherwood, my roommate and my best friend.

They had been the perfect couple. I had a crush on Andrew at the time. Although it hurt, I was genuinely happy for them.

If they had a fairytale ending where they lived happily ever after, I would have had no place in the story.

Alas, fate played a cruel joke. In our junior year, Jennifer jumped off a building. Later, we found out she had been suffering from severe depression.

While I lost my best friend, Andrew lost the love of his life. I stayed by his side through the darkest days in his life.

He refused to eat or drink. All he did was lock himself in his room, crying all night long.

I never left him. I cooked for him, talked to him, coaxed him to sleep like he was a child.

Eventually, we got together. I knew he still loved Jennifer, but I believed my love could heal him.

When we got married, Andrew suggested we remain childfree, and I agreed to it. During those days, we lived peacefully and happily. I thought we'd go on like that forever at the time.

I found myself staring at Andrew for a long moment, but I no longer felt the same way as I did before, despite how much more handsome he looked now.

Joel handed me a tablet and a folder of documents before whispering something in my ear.

Andrew choked out, "What have you been hiding from me?"

Letting out a cold laugh, I opened the video on the tablet. "How shameless of you two to accuse me of the very thing you're doing. Aren't you the ones hiding secrets?"

Turning to Andrew, I held the tablet in front of him. "Why don't you take a look at this, my dear husband?"

The moment Andrew saw what was on the screen, his face turned as white as a sheet.

As Andrew was led past me, he stopped. With hollow eyes, he looked at me and said, "Tessa, I'm sorry."There was no way I could forgive him. A simple apology was too little, too late. What stood between us now was a decade of lies, and there was no going back anymore.Helen was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and falsifying academic credentials. As for Andrew, he was fired for embezzlement and complicity. He was also subject to further investigation by the police. The two innocent children were sent to their maternal grandparents. Meanwhile, my dad became seriously ill. He simply couldn't understand how the son-in-law he had cherished for over a decade could turn out to be someone so terrifying.…The day I was discharged, Joel came to pick me up. It was sunny, and the sunlight was warm against my skin. "Where to, Ms. Patton?" he asked."The beach."As we drove along the coastal road, I rolled down the window, letting the sea breeze brush against my face. I had ne

Dad had completely lost his ability to speak. The son-in-law he had once been proud of turned out to be nothing but a calculating schemer. He muttered, "How could this happen…"Staring at Andrew, I felt nothing but emptiness as I was already past the point of heartbreak.I asked, "Andrew, aren't you curious about how I came to know all of this?"He snapped his head toward me.I continued slowly, "I'll tell you. All of this was investigated at the request of John Sherwood, Jennifer's father.""Mr. Sherwood?"Andrew's pupils shrank, his face full of disbelief. "That's impossible… Mr. Sherwood went back to his hometown years ago. How could he have—""He didn't return to his hometown," I cut in. "After Jennifer died, he moved to another city. He'd always suspected there was something off about her suicide, but after his divorce, he became alone and had no way to look into it."That was until six months ago, when he happened to see Helen's photo in a medical article."I turned to

The background of the photo was a cozy cafe.Andrew and Helen were sitting together, and between them sat a boy and a girl who were about two or three years old. They looked just like a family of four. Dad stared at Andrew in disbelief. "Andrew, you… Didn't you say you didn't want kids?"Andrew's body stiffened. "Who said I didn't want kids?"He broke into a laugh. A hint of madness and vindictive satisfaction was unmistakable on his face. He looked straight at me, each word deliberate, "I never truly wanted to be child-free. I just didn't want to have children with you."As if struck by lightning, Dad staggered back before collapsing into a chair. "Why… Why would you do this…"Andrew turned to him, his eyes cold. "Why? Because she never loved me. She married me just to have me. She was jealous of Jennifer and wanted to take everything that belonged to her, including me!"Trembling with rage, I shouted, "That's a lie!"Andrew sneered. "A lie? So you're denying that you confes

"That's… That's nonsense!" Andrew exclaimed sharply, panic creeping into his tone before he could catch it.Helen was stunned as well, staring at us in confusion.I sneered coldly and signaled to Joel. He immediately showed a set of photos on the tablet. On the left was Jennifer in her college days. She was standing in front of the library in a white dress, smiling brightly like sunlight itself. On the right was Helen in a white lab coat. Her expression and features were almost identical to Jennifer's. Their eyes were especially similar as they looked pure and yet faintly melancholic.A collective gasp filled the room."They look so much alike…""They look like exact copies of each other."Even Dad was dumbfounded. He stared at the photos before turning to Helen. "This is…"I looked at Andrew. "What do you have to say for yourself now, Andrew? The person you were looking for was never Helen. You were merely looking for Jennifer's substitute.""No… That's not true…" Andrew stu

I nodded at Joel, signaling for him to play the other video. It was still in the same underground parking lot.Andrew leaned against the hood of his car while Helen hugged him from behind. "Andrew, can't you divorce her yet?"His face slightly flushed, Andrew replied, "Haven't we talked about this? Just wait a little longer.""But every time I see you two together, I get insanely jealous."Andrew said with a soft, indulgent smile, "Don't be silly. I only love you."Though the video was short, every frame felt like a knife to the heart. My dad stood there, stunned. He pointed at the screen, then at Andrew, unable to say a single thing for a long time. "You… You two…"The room fell into deathly silence. The same people who were just moments ago shouting in outrage now looked at Andrew with complicated expressions."Oh my gosh… Dr. Rollins doesn't seem like the kind of person to do such things…""So he's a two-timer.""His poor wife. She's been totally cheated on."Andrew's fac

The video on the tablet began to play. It was surveillance footage from a parking lot.In it, a suspicious figure approached my car. With a toolbox in hand, she opened the door and worked inside it for a long time. That person was Helen. Andrew's face turned deathly pale as his eyes filled with disbelief. "No… That's not real…" he muttered.Instead of responding, I pulled out a document from the folder and threw it in front of Helen. "The brakes of my car were deliberately tampered with. What do you have to say now?"No one expected things to develop like this. Nonetheless, my dad was still stubbornly in denial. He pointed at Joel, shouting, "It was you! You must have fabricated this evidence to set Dr. Gardner up so you could be with my daughter!"Helen immediately latched onto that and echoed, "Yes! That must be it! Mrs. Rollins, how could you use such despicable methods just to get a divorce?"The surrounding onlookers started whispering, turning on Joel and me."That vide
