Chapter 3

Author: Tiny Gild
Hugo paused. "Cathy, what are you trying to pull this time?"

I smiled bitterly as I pointed at the divorce agreement on the nightstand. "Sign it, or I'll file for divorce. Hugo, I'm tired. Let's stop tormenting each other, okay?"

Hugo looked me over. Then, he stubbed out his cigarette on the table and picked up the papers. He flipped through them, his face growing darker.

"You've thought of everything, huh? Down to the division of our assets. You really are going all out to make this look convincing." A mocking smile spread across his face. "But if you leave me, where are you going to find another stand-in who looks so much like Hayden?"

I braced myself against the bed and forced myself to sit up. Years of pent-up hurt and resentment came pouring out. "Yeah, I did see you as Hayden's stand-in. You've tortured me for years. Isn't this the answer you wanted to hear?"

Hugo slammed his fist on the table, his eyes bloodshot. "Cathy, shut up! How is he better than me?"

My voice shook, but I kept saying things I didn't mean. "He's better than you in every way! Now I see that you're nothing like him. You're not good enough to be his stand-in!"

Something snapped in Hugo. He grabbed my wrist and dragged me to Hayden's room.

Under the cold moonlight, he pointed at Hayden's portrait, a slightly crazed smile on his face. "Aren't you just upset that I haven't come home or fulfilled my duties as your husband all these years? Alright, today, I'll do just that right in front of Hayden!"

I grew frightened and turned to run, sensing something was wrong, but Hugo grabbed me and started pulling at my clothes.

I fought with all my strength, but he held me tightly.

"Hugo, are you insane?"

"Even if I'm insane, it's your fault!"

A warm drop landed on my neck. Hugo's voice was slightly hoarse. "Cathy, you loved Hayden so much, but he died before you could be with him. You must regret that, don't you? So why don't you just treat me as if I were him? After all, Hayden and I look almost exactly alike."

I bit down hard on Hugo's shoulder, making him pause. I quickly seized the opportunity and kicked him in the groin.

The pain made him immediately release his grip on my arms.

I slapped Hugo with all my strength, and blood trickled down the corner of his mouth.

"Hugo, if you lay a hand on me again today, I'll fight you to the death!"

  • My Husband Thinks I Love His Dead Brother   Chapter 9

Three years later, I lay comfortably on a yacht in Xantar, drifting with the waves as the sea breeze blew across my face.Yeah, I was still alive. After developing PTSD, I couldn't sleep at night and had to rely on the sleeping pills my doctor prescribed. So, I developed a tolerance over time. When Janelle locked me in the warehouse, I woke up almost immediately. She seemed so sure I'd stay asleep that she didn't even bother tying me up before leaving. So once I was awake, I immediately escaped through the warehouse window.I'd been planning to leave for a long time, and I'd already moved most of my assets overseas. I knew that even if I managed to escape, I'd still have to deal with Hugo and fight him in court for a divorce. So, I decided to play along and fake my own death.I contacted the friend I'd trusted most since my school days and worked with her to fool Hugo. The body he'd found was fake too.Knowing how twisted Hugo was, I figured he wouldn't care if I died anyway. Th

Hugo nearly broke down over what Janelle said. He was afraid he'd lose control and kill her if this went on any longer, so he immediately told Allen to take her to the police station. As Allen dragged Janelle away, she cursed Hugo out, "Hugo Lambert, stop pretending you're so devoted! You don't love Cathy at all! Go to hell, you bastard!"Hugo clutched his head in anguish.Bullshit! I was the person he loved most in this world. How could he not love me?He'd fallen for me at first sight, and he could feel how much I depended on him. If it weren't for Hayden, he and I could have been happy together for the rest of our lives. And I had clearly treated him as a stand-in. So, why did everyone keep telling him that I loved him?Could it be that he was wrong? No, that couldn't be right. How could he be wrong? The burn scar on my shoulder was proof enough that I didn't love him.An unknown number called Hugo just then. He was about to hang up, but for some reason, he answered."Hell

A cold, sinister smile crossed Hugo's face. Janelle had never seen this side of him before and froze, too frightened to move.Hugo reached out and grabbed her face. "Tell me exactly what you did."The way Hugo looked right then made Janelle believe he was capable of murder, so she confessed everything that had happened. After he dumped her, she learned that he was the one who refused to get a divorce. She figured that if I disappeared, he would get back together with her.She knew I'd been selling off my properties, so she deliberately chose the cafe in the old part of the town, which was surrounded by old apartment buildings. The narrow gaps were barely wide enough for one person to pass through.More importantly, fire trucks couldn't get in, and Janelle had even sabotaged all the nearby fire hydrants, making the firefighters' job even harder.Once everything was in place, she had someone buy my cafe to make sure I'd be there when the fire started. She drugged my coffee, then dr

No matter how many times Hugo tried to start the car, it wouldn't budge. Frustrated and helpless, he shouted, "Come on, start already!"When the engine finally started, he slammed the gas and sped straight to the address the police had given him. He stumbled into the deathly silent funeral home, dazed. When the staff learned he was there to claim a body, they impatiently led him to the morgue. The corpse lying there was almost unrecognizable, badly charred by the intense heat, with parts of the torso missing. The staff member said nonchalantly, "Many parts of the body had been burned to ashes because of the extreme heat. The firefighters had a hard time finding those remains."Hugo said nothing, looking strangely calm. "Have her cremated. I'll send someone to pick up the ashes later."He walked to the entrance and slowly pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. His hands shook so badly he dropped the pack.Hugo slowly crouched down and picked it up. He didn't get back to his

Hugo snorted. "Body? What is she trying to pull now? Was all that drama about ending her life not enough? Now she's got the cops in on it too?"The officers were in disbelief. They couldn't understand how Hugo could be so heartless."Mr. Lambert, please take this matter seriously! Here are our IDs and badge numbers. As Ms. Colgan's husband, you're legally responsible for handling her remains!"Hugo fell silent, then laughed, though his smile held a clear hint of panic. "She'd threatened to take her own life so many times. How could she possibly be dead? And if she is, isn't that for the best? She can be with Hayden. What could be better than that?"The officers sighed helplessly at his behavior and handed Hugo a piece of paper with an address on it."Ms. Colgan's body is being held at this address. Please make arrangements for it as soon as possible."Hugo clenched the paper tightly, then tore it to shreds. He was genuinely angry this time. He could put up with me constantly thr

Hugo seemed to come to his senses a little. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his eyes red, "I'm sorry, Cathy, but I can't divorce you."He turned and walked away, leaving only one final remark. "Let's just spend the rest of our lives torturing each other until we die."…Over the next few days, I prepared for the divorce proceedings and made plans to leave.Maybe I'd spent so long lowering myself for Hugo that everyone had gotten used to it. Even the fact that I'd sold my shares in Lambert Corporation had made headlines.Everyone was trying to guess what I was up to. They wondered if I had finally gotten tired of chasing after Hugo and decided to play hard to get. While gossip about my sudden change was still making the rounds in high society, news broke that Janelle had been dumped, not long after I asked for a divorce. She showed up outside Lambert Corporation every day, crying and demanding to see Hugo. But he paid her n
