Chapter 3

Author: Cash Machine
I yanked the black fabric aside. It was pitch black outside, save for a handful of streetlights. Yet, the white light that had landed on her face earlier was cold and glaring.

I lowered my head to inspect her hands. Her fingers were scraped raw, and the crevices under her fingernails were filled with black fabric fibers.

"Does it hurt?"

Lucia looked at me blankly. "Why am I here, Mommy?"

"Do you not remember?"

She shook her head.

I pointed at the hole in the black fabric. "You scraped this through."

Lucia looked at her own hands before tearing up. "I didn't."

"Earlier, you told me you wanted to see the moon spirit."

Lucia stiffened for a moment before tilting her head up. "In that case, did I see her?" There was an unmistakable note of anticipation in her voice.

My chest tightened. "No."

The bedroom door suddenly swung open. Landon stood barefoot in the hallway with a small knife in his hand.

The moment he saw the hole in the black fabric, all the color drained from his face. He charged over and yanked Lucia away from the window. "Who allowed you to touch it?"

Lucia yelped.

I shoved him away. "You're hurting her!"

Landon ignored me and crouched down, holding Lucia's gaze. "What did you see?"

"I didn't see anything."

"Think again!"

Lucia was frightened to tears; she buried herself in my arms.

I shoved him. "That's enough! She was just sleepwalking!"

Landon stared at her for several seconds without uttering a word. He picked up the knife, found a new piece of black fabric, and covered the hole and layered it over and over.

Before I could press him further, he had already scooped Lucia up and laid her down on our bed. Lucia didn't fall back asleep until dawn.

The following day, as expected, she didn't remember a thing.

I tended to the wound on her fingertips. The moment the alcohol swab touched her skin, she jerked her hand back. "This must be Daddy's fault!" she said petulantly, shooting daggers at Landon.

Landon didn't explain himself. He sat across from us at the dining table, though he didn't touch the oatmeal in front of him.

Lucia forgot about the pain in no time. Nibbling on her spoon, she peppered him with questions. "Daddy, what color is the moon spirit's dress?"

"I don't know."

"Does she wear flowers in her hair?"

"I don't know."

"In that case… Is she super pretty?"

Landon's hand froze in midair.

Lucia tilted her head to look at him. "Didn't you tell me the moon spirit was super pretty, and that anyone who saw her would fall in love with her?"

Landon abruptly seized her hand. His chair toppled backward with a loud crash.

"I never said that." He looked at me and repeated himself. "I swear I never said that, Sylvia!"

That afternoon, Landon took his medication and turned in early.

While I was cleaning up the dining table, I accidentally knocked Lucia's drawing onto the floor. The moment I picked it up, the blood in my veins ran cold.

The drawing showed a family of three sitting around the dining table, but there were four sets of cutlery on the table. The fourth chair was empty. Beside the back of the chair, three crooked words were scrawled—the moon spirit.

I sat in the living room for what felt like forever, holding the drawing. Landon was fast asleep in the bedroom. Yet, every so often, he would cry out, "Stay away from me!"

…

The following day, after dropping Lucia off, I went straight to work. I didn't tell anyone about the strange things happening at home.

If Landon were confirmed to be mentally unstable, he'd be sent back to the investigation center immediately. I couldn't afford to take that risk until I figured out what was going on.

I was a deep space mission risk assessment engineer, and I had previously been responsible for analyzing some of the ground data. My clearance allowed me to access the return records of previous missions to the far side of the moon.

Under the guise of reviewing Landon's psychological state, I logged into the internal database. I entered "far side of the moon", "fear of circular objects", and " covering windows".

The system took almost half a minute to load. Then, 11 encrypted files appeared on the screen.

The earliest file dated back 20 years. The 11 astronauts varied in age and mission assignment, yet their symptoms after returning to Earth were eerily consistent—insomnia, emotional outbursts, refusal to come into contact with round objects, and a fear of light at night.

Several psychological evaluation reports also contained the same term—the moon spirit. The doctors believed it was a hallucination induced by long-term confinement. The diagnoses in all 11 reports were virtually identical.

I kept scrolling, and the follow-up reports on their families sent a chill down my spine. Not long after these 11 astronauts returned to Earth, all of their wives disappeared.

There were no signs of a break-in. The locks were intact, and nothing was missing.

In every case, the husbands were at home when it happened. Yet when questioned during the investigation, they either claimed they were asleep or insisted they couldn't remember a thing.

The cases occurred at different times and locations, so no one had ever linked them together. I rearranged the dates of the astronauts' returns and their wives' disappearances.

When the results came out, I stared at the screen for what felt like forever. All 11 wives had vanished on the 15th day after their husbands' return.

I suddenly recalled what Landon had asked me when he got out of the car. "What day is it?"

Then, he said, " I only have to wait for 14 days."

He hadn't asked casually. He knew what would happen on the 15th day.

I forced my hands to stop shaking and continued to check the attachments.

The supplementary record of the first astronaut mentioned that after his wife disappeared, investigators found a knife in the bedroom. He was gripping it so tightly that no one could pry it from his hand. There was no trace of his wife's blood on the blade; only his own.

I cross-referenced the rest of the files and realized knives were present in all 11 cases. The incidents had been classified separately as self-harm tendencies, mental instability, or hazardous item control issues. No one had ever connected these details.

I recalled how Landon had stood in the hallway that night. He'd been holding a knife, too.

I kept digging, only to discover that the original records for all 11 cases had been deleted. At the end of one file, a single note remained. "Original footage not filed. Retained by Caleb Miller, Return Medical Observation Team."

Caleb Miller. I knew him.

Two decades ago, he'd been responsible for the psychological evaluations of the first group of astronauts to return from the far side of the moon. Five years ago, he'd suddenly applied for retirement. He hadn't participated in another aerospace program since then.

Landon's hand stiffened against the glass. "What did you just say?"The moon spirit toyed with the lunar dust crystals. Her smile widened. "Don't you understand? It was all a lie."Landon hurled his body against the glass wall. "You lied to me… You gave me your word! I handed Sylvia over to you. I even gave up my own family!" "You did that of your own free will," the moon spirit answered softly through my lips. "I only asked if you wanted to live forever. You were the one who fell to your knees and begged me to take your wife." Landon shook his head frantically. "That's impossible. What about the others? They've been alive for 20 years!" "They merely existed." The moon spirit chuckled. "Their wives are gone, and they never attained immortality. If they admitted they'd been deceived, wouldn't everything they'd done become a joke? So, they helped me conceal the truth, waiting for the next person to go to the moon so they could fool themselves all over again. Landon, you're just a

Lucia didn't budge. Her gaze shifted from the plea that had been wiped away to my face. "Are you really my Mommy?" The corners of my mouth slowly lifted. "Silly girl, of course I am." "In that case, do you remember when we went to the aquarium to see the dolphins for my fifth birthday?" The woman inside my head chuckled. Using my voice, she answered, "Of course, I remember. You even threw a tantrum because you wanted to bring the dolphin home." Lucia's tears immediately spilled over. "You're lying. I had a high fever on my fifth birthday. We didn't go anywhere." She pounded on the glass. "You're not my Mommy! Give me my Mommy back!" Her words pierced my consciousness like needles. I repeatedly hurled myself against the icy wall with all my strength. The excruciating pain felt as though it was splitting my skull in two. At last, I reclaimed my voice. "Lucia." I pressed my forehead against the glass. "Don't open the door. Stay away from me!" Lucia nodded, weeping.Ca

Lucia let go of my hand. "You're not my Mommy." I wanted to tell her that I was her Mommy. Yet, my mouth wouldn't obey me. "Of course, I am." I reached out to caress her face. "From now on, I'll never grow old, and I'll never leave you." Lucia stumbled backward, knocking over a chair. Caleb rushed into the hospital room and shielded her behind him. "Sylvia, can you hear me?" I looked at him and smiled faintly. "You've aged."Caleb stiffened. "Two decades ago, you had the courage to look me in the eye. Why can't you do it now?" That wasn't my voice, yet every word came out of my mouth. I was trapped inside my own body. I could see Lucia crying, but I couldn't move a single finger. The woman chuckled inside my mind. "Give up. Hand your body over to me, and I'll take care of your daughter in your place."I hurled myself against the icy wall separating me from my consciousness. Each time I struck it, it felt as though my mind was being ripped apart. However, she showed

The pounding on the door continued, one deafening blow after another. The elation on Landon's face instantly turned to terror. He pulled out the knife, and blood spurted from my shoulder. Black spots swam before my eyes, but I clung desperately to his pant leg. "Run, Lucia!"Lucia had just gotten to her feet when Landon seized her in a vice-like grip. He pressed the tip of the knife against our daughter's neck. "Stay back! If any of you set foot inside, I'll kill her!"The pounding on the door stopped. "Let the girl go, Landon." The police officer outside softened his tone. "You can tell us what you want.""Get back, all of you!" Landon dragged Lucia back toward the window. Lucia trembled all over, but she bit her lip down hard. I clutched my wound and rose to my feet. "I'm the one you want, Landon. Lucia has nothing to do with this." The woman's voice sounded again in the hallway. "She's stalling for time. Kill her!" Landon shuddered. The edge of the knife drew a thin s

I shielded Lucia behind me and slowly backed toward the window. Landon stood at the doorway, holding his knife horizontally. "Listen to me, Landon.""Don't call me that." His eyes were bloodshot. "Every time you call my name, I can't bring myself to do it." I stared at him. "Were the 11 men before me just like you?" Landon stopped in his tracks. "Did they also cry and apologize before handing their own wives over with their own hands?" "Shut up!""Did they attain immortality?"The muscles on his face twitched. I knew I had hit the mark. "Two decades have passed. Has the moon spirit ever fulfilled her promise?" "I told you to shut up!" He swung his knife at the headboard. The blade hacked into the wood, and Lucia burst into tears. Landon panted heavily. "They failed. Their wives wouldn't listen, and in the end, they couldn't bring themselves to do it. I'm different from them!" I followed his line of reasoning and asked, "Because you can kill me?" His lips quiv

Landon's hand jolted violently. "What do you get?"I kept my eyes on the knife pressed against my chest. "Is killing me the only way you can attain immortality?" It clattered to the ground. Landon stumbled backward and sank to his knees beside the bed. "No… I'm not trying to kill you."He clutched his hair as tears streamed down his face. "She just wants to borrow your body. You won't be in pain for long, Sylvia. She promised me!"My stomach churned. "What about me, then? If she takes my body, where am I supposed to go?" He parted his lips, yet he couldn't find his voice.I sneered. "Did she not tell you, or did you not bother to ask?" Landon shook his head frantically. "I genuinely had no choice. When I saw her on the moon, she showed me what would happen to me. I'd age, fall ill, and eventually become so weak I couldn't even get out of bed. Lucia would grow up, and you'd grow old, too. "Both of you would sit by my bedside, watching me rot away. I couldn't accept it, Syl
