With quick steps, Lucas came forward and pulled me up from the bed by my wrist. He stared into my eyes.

“What do you mean by this, Elise? Do you think I’ll let you go if you try to make headway in this roundabout manner? I want you to make a statement and apologize to Shevonne. Tell people that you were just playing around and fell accidentally. Do you hear me?”

In contrast to Lucas’s rage, I only looked at him quietly as I shook my head.

“It wasn’t a game. Shevonne wanted to kill me.”

Instantly, tears ran down Shevonne’s face, and she threw herself into Lucas’s embrace.

“It was only a prank, Lucas. How could she blame me for it? Let’s forget it. Others can lecture me all they want. It’s fine for them to think I was in the wrong. Let’s go quickly. Let’s not make Elise mad, or she’ll say even more bad stuff about me…”
