Chapter 4

Author: Cocoa Pudding
That night, I caught a strange scent in the air, and my consciousness suddenly slipped away. When I woke up, I realized I had been tied to an electric chair. A black hood covered my head, and tape sealed my mouth shut.

Marco’s cold voice came from somewhere beside me.

“Lina, is this the one who laid a hand on you in the punishment room? Take off her hood. I want to see who had the nerve to touch what’s mine.”

The moment he said it, Lina screamed in panic, “No! Don’t take it off! Marco, I’m traumatized. Whenever I see her face, I get terrified.”

“In that case, we won’t remove it,” Marco soothed her gently. “Hey, don’t cry. I’ll get justice for you.”

Hearing their conversation, everything finally clicked. There was no so-called family punishment room. It was all Lina’s setup. She hooded me and taped my mouth just so that Marco would personally torture me.

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Marco was always ruthless toward his enemies. Falling into his hands meant death was usually the kindest outcome.

“Mmph! Mmph!”

I struggled desperately, trying to make some kind of sound so Marco would realize who I was. Unfortunately, my mouth was sealed too tightly, and I couldn’t speak a single word.

Marco stepped closer, his tone that of a man used to giving orders.

“Tsk. Turns out it’s a woman. Consider yourself lucky. I never hit women with my own hands.”

He pulled out a syringe. “This is what the Federal Bureau uses when interrogating suspects. It amplifies a person’s senses a hundredfold, and no matter how much it hurts, it keeps them fully conscious.”

Right after he spoke, a sharp sting hit my neck. A cold liquid flooded into my veins. In an instant, every sense in my body exploded, magnified to an unbearable degree.

Marco let out a low, cruel laugh. “I heard you called my sweet girl a whore? Said you’d rip her skin apart? If that’s the case, Tate, give her a proper welcome. Every bit of pain Lina suffered, return it to her a hundredfold.”

With that, he wrapped an arm around Lina and left the room with her.

As the electric chair activated, a violent current tore through me, making it hard to even breathe. Then, a whip struck my skin. I screamed, but no sound escaped. The pain was so sharp it felt like my skull was about to split open.

I had no idea how much time had passed. Eventually, my strength drained until I couldn’t even move. Still, the pain—amplified a hundredfold—remained painfully clear, refusing to fade.

In the haze, I heard Lina’s voice again. “Don’t pass out yet, Aurora. Marco’s asleep now, so I came back to keep you company.”

She let out a chilling little laugh as she grabbed my right hand and continued, “I heard the cure to Marco’s spinal cord was extracted using this very hand of yours, right? How annoying…”

With that, she slammed my hand to the floor and ground it under her heel. I heard the bones crack, and only then did the pain finally drag me into unconsciousness.

The next morning, I was dumped like trash at the entrance of an abandoned factory. My hands had been untied, so with my left hand, I struggled to pull off the hood. Then, I grabbed my phone and called my mentor.

My vision blurred, and just before I fully blacked out, a strong, steady voice reached my ears.

“Dr. Aurora, what happened to you? Who did this?”

I shook my head weakly and blurted out, “Just get me out of here. Once I’m gone, erase all my records. I never want to set foot in this place again…”

The car door shut, and tears silently slipped down my cheeks. I knew this time, I would truly disappear from Marco’s world.

As soon as I got in the car, a text arrived from him.

[Aurora, are you still mad at me? If you still have any doubt about Lina and me, I’ll send her abroad tomorrow and never speak to her again. I want you to know that you’re the most important person in my entire world. I love you more than my own life.]

My entire body trembled, a wave of nausea crashing through me.

Back when I left for the desert to gather the cure for his spine, I willingly put on the necklace he gave me, choosing to be bound to him. Now, I took off that necklace and placed it into a box, asking the military personnel driving the car to deliver it to Marco.

The moment I removed it, my whole body felt weightless. As a soft breeze slipped through the car window, I closed my eyes.

Marco, my love for you was the chain that trapped me. Now that I don’t love you anymore, you will never find me again.

“Marco, I can’t forgive you,” I said quietly, “so I’m leaving the final decision to God. “A Russian roulette revolver has six chambers but three bullets. We take turns pointing it at each other’s heads and pulling the trigger. If, in the end, neither of us dies, that means God has forgiven you on my behalf. Then, I’ll follow His will and forgive you one last time. “But if either one of us dies, then the game ends, and we’re both finally free.”Marco immediately grabbed my hand. “Aurora, if you die, I’ll pull the trigger and die with you.”Instead of feeling touched, I said to him calmly, “If you die, I won’t do the same. I’ll forget you and go on with living my life.”Marco’s expression twisted in pain, but he didn’t argue. He gestured for his men to bring the revolver.“Aurora, I love you,” he said. “I won’t let you risk getting your head blown off just to gamble with me.”Holding the gun, Marco continued, “So, we won’t take turns. I’ll fire all three shots myself. If I’m sti

However, Marco clearly wasn’t listening. He kept repeating to himself, almost delusional, “I know you’re still angry. It’s okay, I understand. We have plenty of time. I’ll win your forgiveness, slowly.”For the entirety of next month, he really did follow through. Whenever I refused to cooperate, he ordered his men to activate the electric chair every night. They weren’t allowed to stop, even if he fainted from the pain.Lina was strapped into the punishment room’s chair as well. After weeks of that torture, she was barely breathing. Still, Marco demanded that the doctor heal her after every session, just enough to keep her alive. Just like that, she hung on by a single, miserable thread.Marco pulled out every trick he had, desperately showing me his regret. However, I never gave him a single response. I didn’t want to see him, so I kept my face cold and refused to say even one word.“Please, Aurora. Don’t do this to me.” Marco was on the edge of breaking down. “Just talk to me. E

Marco lost it. Without a moment of hesitation, he threw himself out of the helicopter right after me.“Aurora, I won’t allow you to leave me!” he roared mid‑air, his face twisted. “If you die, we’ll die together!”After that, we plunged into the ocean.Unfortunately, I had planned to swim away using skills I’d trained for years, but I hadn’t expected their helicopter to be equipped with an inflatable rescue raft. Marco’s men dragged his half‑drowned body out of the water and then forcibly took me with them. Just like that, I was taken back to that estate—my cage. After that, Marco cleared his entire schedule. Anything he couldn’t cancel, he handled from home. From then on, he practically glued himself to my side. He even handcuffed my right wrist to his left so I couldn’t escape while he slept.“This way, you can never leave me again,” he said with a fanatic gleam in his eyes. “Aurora, bear with it for now. You might not be used to the cuffs, but in time, you will.”“Used to it?”

In an instant, the entire base went into high alert. Researchers scattered in all directions, and soldiers rushed to the front with riot shields raised.“Sir, we don’t care who you are or what your intentions might be,” the base commander said, face cold and tense. “Put down your weapon and surrender immediately. You’re surrounded. There’s no escape.”Marco just laughed. “Is that so? This is an indoor facility. How exactly are your snipers going to get a clean shot at me? And from where I’m standing, I can see every single one of your men. So, go ahead and try it. Let’s see what’s faster: your bullets, or my thumb on this detonator.”The commander’s expression turned downright awful.Marco wasn’t wrong. The snipers outside couldn’t take a headshot through the building, and although the soldiers inside could fire, none of them could move faster than Marco’s eyes. No one could guarantee they’d kill him before he blew everyone sky‑high. After a long moment of silence, the commander f

I pointed straight at the door. “Marco, I don’t want to hear another excuse from you, and I don’t want to see you again. Leave. Now. Otherwise, I’ll call the military and have them remove you by force.”Still, Marco refused to go. He grabbed me with a desperate strength, eyes burning with madness. “I’m not leaving! You’re my everything. Nothing but death can separate us. We’ve been together for so many years. How can you throw everything away because of Lina? And besides, I didn’t marry her out of love. I just… had to be responsible for what I did.”As he spoke, he pulled out his phone and played a video.“Lina hurt you, and I’ve avenged you. Don’t worry. I told you. Anyone who hurts you, I’ll make them pay it back ten times over.”The video showed Lina’s miserable state, far worse than anything I ever imagined. However, instead of feeling vindicated, my blood ran cold. I never thought Marco could go this far. When he liked Lina, he could spoil her to bits. However, once he realiz

[Aurora’s POV]My right hand suffered a comminuted fracture that night. After I was taken to the base, the top military doctors operated on me. However, a fracture that severe wasn’t reversible, and I would never be able to control precision instruments again. With no other choice, I shifted from hands-on work to theoretical research and started training other team members in field operations. When Marco showed up, I was in the middle of guiding a group of graduate researchers on how to extract medicinal compounds.“The deep-sea octopus has astounding regenerative abilities. Once its tentacle is severed, it can grow back. Our mission this time is to extract the regeneration factor from those tentacles and develop it into a drug. This could mark a groundbreaking leap in modern medicine.”While I was speaking, someone suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. A warm breath brushed against my neck, and the voice I thought I’d never hear again rang out.“I finally found you! Aurora, I’
