Silence hangs between them like clear smoke.

Cecelia and Raees sit across from each other at the small round table tucked into the café’s upper level. The light filtering through the almost invincible windows casts light on the tablecloth, the sun starting to show signs of early retirement.

Neither of them speaks for the first few minutes, although it is quite far from being a comfortable one.

Cecelia sits awkwardly, her fingers twitching against her lap, eyes flicking around the room like someone searching for an escape route. Raees, by contrast, is perfectly still. One leg crossed over the other, elbow resting lightly on the armrest, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass with precision.

She only glances at Cecelia every so often through the rim of her glass whenever she takes those long sips, but those glances sting like paper cuts. It’s as though she’s measuring and studying Cecelia.

Finally, a waiter arrives to break the awkward quiet.

“Anything for you, ma’am?” he asks Cecelia
