Chapter 4

Author: Gazette
Just when I thought I could proceed with the next stage of settling the score as planned, something unexpected happened.

That afternoon, I had just reached the front door when I heard Isabelle and Brody arguing fiercely inside.

There was a trace of panic in Isabelle's voice. "Brody, Bill came looking for me again. He said if I don't give him 50,000 dollars, he'll expose everything and make a scene at your hospital!"

Brody's voice was lowered, intense annoyance seeping through every word he said. "Why isn't he dead yet? You were already fooling around with him before you married David, and now he's back to blackmail you?"

I raised an eyebrow outside the door.

Well, well. Now that was quite the bombshell. So, Isabelle wasn't some pure and innocent widow after all.

The comments popped up right on cue.

"Major bombshell incoming! Isabelle used to be an escort. She was secretly hooking up with another man behind David's back. Now that man is back for more money!"

"Brody knows the truth, but he has a savior complex. He thinks Isabelle is the victim, so he's been hiding everything from everyone and paying off her debts for her. Even David's death back then might have had something to do with that man."

I leaned against the wall and listened to what was happening inside.

"Brody, please help me one last time. Mortgage the house and get me 50,000 dollars. I promise I'll make him disappear forever!" Isabelle pleaded desperately.

"The house… It's already been transferred to Roxanne." Brody raked his fingers irritably through his hair.

Isabelle shrieked, "What? Are you crazy? You gave the house to that woman? What am I supposed to do? If she kicks you out, you won't even have a place to live!"

Brody was still as confident as ever. "She won't. She loves me too much. She only did it to shield me from the debt."

Isabelle began throwing a tantrum. "No! You have to make her mortgage the house and get the money. Brody, I'm pregnant!"

Standing outside the door, I felt my mind go blank following a loud buzz.

Brody lowered his voice, anxiety evident in his tone. "Are you crazy? Didn't I tell you to take the pills every time?"

Isabelle said, "I secretly stopped taking them. David has been dead for so many years. I've had enough of sneaking around. I want to have your child. Wouldn't it be better if we could finally be together openly?"

Brody hissed in exasperation, "Openly? How exactly do you expect us to be together openly? You want the whole world to know I got my rescuer's widow pregnant? Do you want me to become a director or not? If this gets out, everyone will condemn the two of us!"

Dead silence followed.

After a long while, Isabelle began to cry. "Then, what are you planning to do? Make me get an abortion? Brody, this is our flesh and blood! When that bitch was carrying your child, you were ruthless enough to put mifepristone in her soup and force her to miscarry!

"Now that it's my turn, are you going to kill our child too?"

A loud crash ensued. It sounded as if Brody had smashed something.

He growled, "Shut up! Weren't you the one who cried and said you couldn't stand her carrying my child and forced me to do it? Nothing can go wrong at a critical time like this. This child has to be aborted!"

Outside the door, every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze. My stomach churned so violently that I felt as if I were about to vomit up my internal organs.

At last, I understood the whole truth.

No wonder he had obsessively made nourishing soups for me during that period. No wonder I had suddenly suffered unexplained abdominal pain and massive bleeding. No wonder he had specifically chosen the day of my miscarriage to buy that double burial plot.

It had never been about repaying a debt of gratitude.

The names on that contract for the double burial plot definitely weren't David and Isabelle. They were Brody and Isabelle!

He had used my money and sacrificed my child's life. All so he could prove his devotion to his secret, forbidden widowed lover and promise that they would share the same bed in life and the same grave in death.

They weren't merely a shameless couple who had repaid kindness with betrayal and crossed every moral boundary. They were also the murderers who had killed my child!

My eyes turned bloodshot as I clamped a hand tightly over my mouth, refusing to let myself make even the slightest sound. My nails dug deep into my palm, drawing glaring streaks of blood.

With trembling hands, I tapped the record button on my phone, preparing to capture more evidence of their crimes.

But just then…

"Who's out there?"

Rapid footsteps sounded from the living room, heading straight for the front door.

I stood in the narrow hallway with nowhere to hide.

Following a click, the door was suddenly yanked open.

Brody's face appeared behind it, his eyes filled with such viciousness that he looked like a demon. Behind him, Isabelle stood barefoot in the middle of the living room, her clothes disheveled, staring at me in terror.

In just three months, he looked like a completely different person. His hair had been shaved down to his scalp, and he wore a faded prison uniform. His face was gaunt and ghostlike, and his eyes deeply sunken. His back was hunched over like a broken man whose spine had become severely deformed. The moment he saw how polished and glamorous I looked, the stark contrast shattered the last shred of his sanity. Like a rabid dog driven into a corner, he suddenly lunged at the glass, his eyes blazing with hatred and resentment. He grabbed the telephone receiver, his voice hoarse, desperate, and deranged. "Roxanne! You knew all along, didn't you? You heard us from outside the door. You recorded everything. You deliberately stood by and watched us make fools of ourselves!"I leaned back in my chair and looked at him calmly, as if I were staring at a pile of trash.I said flatly, "That's right. From the moment you bought Isabelle a grave… From the moment the two of you drugged me and pois

The next day, the police arrived at the hospital with an arrest warrant.Brody had originally hoped to hire a lawyer and get released on bail by claiming it had been a family dispute that accidentally got out of hand. But when the criminal investigators played the recording and questioned him about how he had obtained the controlled mifepristone, he completely broke down."It was Isabelle! That bitch made the recording!" he exclaimed. In the interrogation room, Brody screamed like a madman. He pushed all the blame onto the woman he had once claimed to love with his life.He hurriedly explained, "I got the medication, but she was the one who put it in the food! She was jealous that Roxanne was carrying my child. She forced me to do it! I didn't know anything about it! Go arrest her! She was the mastermind!"Watching two villains tear each other apart never got old.Carrying the divorce agreement I had already drafted, I walked into Isabelle's hospital room. She lay on the bed wit

I hid behind the slightly open door of the guest room and coldly watched the pair of star-crossed lovers who had once sworn that nothing could ever break their bond. Now that their interests and reputations were at risk, they finally bared their ugliest, most selfish fangs at each other. In truth, I didn't care whether Isabelle was actually carrying Bill's child. I only needed Brody to have doubts.Brody was an extremely arrogant man who cared about his reputation above all else and had an intense obsession with emotional fidelity. Once he believed he had been cuckolded—by a thug, no less—the humiliation alone was enough to destroy every shred of his sanity. He tossed Isabelle to the floor like a piece of trash and pointed at her stomach with bloodshot eyes. "Get rid of the baby now! Because of you, I've ruined my career and taken on more than 300,000 dollars in debt! And you had the audacity to pass off some bastard's child as mine! I'll buy the pills tomorrow. If they don't get

The next day, as I was thinking about how to set off the ticking time bomb that was Bill, a comment suddenly popped up before my eyes."Major drama ahead! In the original novel, Bill corners Isabelle today!"I sneered. Talk about perfect timing.I anonymously sent Bill a text message. "Isabelle is pregnant. The baby is yours. She has the 50,000 dollars that Brody gave her and is planning to run away with it. If you don't come now, you'll lose both your woman and the money."After sending the message, I sat at home and quietly waited for the show to begin.Sure enough, I received a call from one of the neighborhood committee ladies that afternoon. She said anxiously, "Roxanne, hurry back and take a look! Isabelle is being cornered in the hallway by some thug she owes money to. He's beating her up and says she owes him 50,000 dollars!"I immediately took a cab home.By the time I arrived at the residential area, the building was surrounded by neighbors watching the commotion.F

What I disclosed took flight like it had wings. In less than half an hour, the news had spread throughout the entire surgical department.By the time I found Brody, several of his colleagues were staring at him with strange, probing looks.Carrying the thermos, I walked in and announced loudly in front of everyone, "Honey, Isabelle is pregnant! We're going to have a new addition to the family! Come on, take some time off. You need to get her registered at the obstetrics and gynecology department for her checkups."A loud clatter rang out as the pen in Brody's hand fell onto the desk, splattering ink all over his hand. His face flushed and paled. Then, it took on a sickly green shade. The veins on his forehead throbbed violently. He stared fixedly at me, his eyes filled with disbelief and terror. He shot to his feet, his voice cracking. "You… What did you say?"One of his colleagues beside him patted him on the shoulder with a knowing smile. "Congratulations, Dr. Singer! Your wido

At that critical moment, I quickly turned off my phone screen and slipped it into my pocket. Then, I pulled a pair of Bluetooth earbuds from my other pocket and put them in my ears. I bent down and picked up a cardboard delivery box that had been left in a corner by the door, letting out a heavy gasp.I kicked the doorframe irritably. As I raised my head, there was a fine sheen of sweat covering my forehead. Surprise flashed through my eyes before giving way to weary annoyance."Honey? Didn't you go to work? Come give me a hand. That damn delivery guy insisted on leaving the package by the elevator even though it was supposed to be delivered to the door. It's full of medicinal food I bought for Isabelle. It's so damn heavy!" I complained.Brody had been tense and apprehensive. But when he saw me drenched in sweat, wearing earbuds and struggling with the box, the murderous intent in his eyes faded and gave way to scrutiny. He stared into my eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing with diff
