Chapter 4

Author: Yearning 11
The next morning, I was woken by the sound of furniture being moved around in the living room.

By the time I stepped out of the bedroom, the entire house had been rearranged.

Several pairs of high heels sat by the entrance, unfamiliar cushions were piled on the couch, and even our family photo had been pushed into a corner.

Annette's suitcases were scattered all over the place.

She sat at the dining table, still wearing the vintage bracelet my mother had left me.

"Annette's old place is no longer available," Xavier said. "So she's going to stay with us for a while."

"Did I agree to that?"

"It's only for a few days."

"Give me back my bracelet first," I said, staring at the bracelet around Annette's wrist.

Annette immediately clutched her wrist, her face paling.

"You never wear it anyway," Xavier countered, frowning. "I'll buy you something better another time."

Just then, I noticed the prenatal checkup booklet on the table. The name on it was Annette Borden, and she was already eight weeks pregnant.

The moment Xavier noticed my gaze, he snatched it up and clenched it in his fist.

A long silence settled over the living room as I stared at him.

"Is the baby yours?"

He said nothing, but he didn't deny it either.

"Tania, I never intended to let Annette take your place," he finally said, reaching out to touch me. "The baby was an accident. Annette has no family to turn to, so I can't just abandon her. But you and Evan are my family."

I took a step back.

"Let's get a divorce."

"Don't say things you don't mean," he replied, his expression shifting. "We can't just throw away all these years together because of this."

The certainty in his voice almost made me laugh.

As I turned and pulled out the suitcase I'd packed the night before, Xavier finally reached out to stop me.

The commotion woke Evan, who appeared in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe for support. His face was pale, and before he could say a word, he suddenly bent over and vomited.

I immediately scooped him up and prepared to take him to the hospital.

"He's just frightened," Xavier said dismissively. "You don't have to make a big deal out of everything."

I ignored him and called an ambulance.

At the hospital, the doctor suspected bleeding inside Evan's skull following his recent fall.

"We need to run some tests immediately. Get ready to sign the consent forms."

I sent Xavier a text.

"Evan keeps vomiting, and he's barely conscious. The doctor said his life might be in danger. Come to the hospital now."

Ten minutes later, his reply came through.

"Tania, have you had enough? Using Evan to get sympathy from me is one thing, but now you're making up life-threatening emergencies?"

I stared at the screen, my hands beginning to tremble. When I tried calling him again, I couldn't get through.

By the time the test results came back, the doctor's expression was grim.

"There's a hematoma inside his skull. He needs surgery immediately."

I signed the surgical consent form, followed by the notice acknowledging the risk to his life.

Just before Evan was wheeled into the operating room, he briefly regained consciousness.

"Mommy, I'm okay. Don't worry…"

Tears streamed down my face as I clutched his hand.

Before following Evan inside, the doctor turned to me.

"Where's the other parent?"

I contacted Xavier's friends, but they knew he was with Annette and tried to talk me out of making a fuss.

"Tania, why put yourself through all this? If you keep using the child to manipulate Xavier, he'll only get more fed up with you."

Urgent footsteps and hurried voices echoed from inside the operating room.

I waited outside the operating room, my hands shaking so badly that I could barely hold my phone.

When the operation was finally over, the doctor emerged.

"We've managed to stabilize him for now, but given his condition, we'd recommend transferring him to a larger hospital."

I didn't dare waste a second. I immediately contacted a pediatric neurosurgery center in another city.

Before dawn, I'd completed the transfer arrangements and boarded the medical transport with Evan and our luggage.

This time, I didn't tell Xavier where we were going.

…

Later that morning, Xavier arrived at the hospital with breakfast.

He hadn't slept well the night before, but he still believed I was simply throwing another tantrum. Once he showed up, he assumed I'd come to my senses and return home with him.

But when he opened the hospital room door, he found a different patient occupying the bed.

"Evan Jepsen was transferred to another hospital before dawn," the nurse said, checking the records. "His mother left with him and took their belongings, too."

Xavier's grip tightened around the breakfast bag.

He immediately called my number, only to hear the cold automated message telling him that my phone was switched off.

For the first time, an unfamiliar sense of panic began to surge within him.

Just then, his phone vibrated.

My lawyer had sent him a divorce agreement. My signature was already at the bottom.

After the divorce, Evan and I finally found some peace. He still had to attend rehabilitation sessions and adjust to life at kindergarten, but he slept more soundly than before. He no longer woke up in the middle of the night, asking if Daddy had left again. And whenever a phone rang, he no longer covered his ears in fear.I continued working at the children's bookstore. Every day, I took him to and from kindergarten, helped him with his hearing exercises, and sat beside him as he carefully worked through his homework.Whenever he felt ready to talk, I listened until he had finished. …One day, his kindergarten held another parent-child drawing activity. The teacher asked the children to draw what they most wanted to become. This time, Evan drew a tree. Beneath it was a cottage with its lights on, and he and I stood at the entrance."Why do you want to become a tree?" Beatrice asked. "Because trees don't have to run after anyone," Evan replied. "They can just stand the

Xavier asked to spend a day with Evan before our marriage officially ended.I didn't make the decision for Evan. After dinner, I asked him what he thought. "Do you want to go?"Evan held his cup and thought about it for a long time. "Mommy, are you coming too?""If you want me there, I'll go."He lowered his head, absently rubbing the rim of the cup. "Can Daddy leave his phone behind?"I told Xavier about Evan's condition for going, and he agreed. …That weekend, we went to the zoo. Xavier left his phone in the car and locked the doors in front of Evan. "I'm not answering any calls today."Evan didn't immediately believe him. He held my hand, keeping his distance from Xavier. Xavier didn't force him. He simply stayed nearby, carrying Evan's water bottle and jacket and standing in line to buy tickets. When Evan stopped to look at the giraffes, Xavier crouched beside him and told him about the animals. Evan listened without turning to look at him. When we passed a

Xavier didn't give up easily. He sent me message after message, telling me that our old home had been put back in order and that no one would touch Evan's room again. He promised that from then on, he'd focus on his family and make appropriate arrangements for Annette."So you still think taking care of her is your responsibility," I replied. He didn't respond for a long time. The next day, he showed up outside the children's bookstore and waited across the street. He didn't come inside. Even when it rained, he stayed there.Evan noticed him a few times, but paid him no attention and continued drawing. It wasn't long before Annette came looking for me. Wearing a long dress, she stopped beside one of the bookshelves. "Tania, what exactly do you want?"I put away the storybooks the children had returned. "Please leave.""Every time Xavier left, it was his own choice," she said, lowering her voice. "I never forced him to go anywhere.""But you knew Evan was injured," I s

I'd moved with Evan into the old house Grandma had left me. It wasn't big, but it was close to the hospital.Evan's bed was pushed against the wall, with storybooks and a box of medicine on the bedside table.I'd also returned to the children's bookstore where I'd worked before I got married. I spent my mornings organizing books and my afternoons reading stories to children.Once Evan was well enough, he started attending a local kindergarten. After school, he would sit in a corner of the bookstore and draw. He drew a dining table set for two, a little cottage, and flowerpots on a balcony. He rarely drew phones anymore.Evan froze as soon as Xavier appeared. He clutched my shirt tightly, refusing to look up. Xavier placed a bag of blocks on the table. "Evan, I bought you some new ones."Then he took out a children's phone. "You can call me directly with this."The moment Evan saw the phone, the color drained from his face. I immediately held out a hand to stop Xavier. "

After I left with Evan, Xavier returned home. Most of our belongings were gone, leaving the house feeling empty and lifeless. He sent me a message."Tania, enough is enough. Evan needs a stable environment."I deleted it as soon as I read it. When my lawyer, Andrew Birkin, contacted Xavier to discuss the separation arrangements, Xavier simply replied, "She's just upset." Later, Xavier contacted Evan's kindergarten, only to learn that he'd taken a leave of absence. "Evan used to wait by the window for his dad every day," Beatrice told him as she handed him a booklet. "But when you never showed up, he eventually stopped waiting."Xavier took the booklet home and sat in the living room, flipping through its pages for a long time. The lights stayed on all night.…The following day, Annette began making herself at home, claiming that she'd been feeling emotionally overwhelmed lately and needed someone to keep her company. She moved her clothes into the master bedroom and sp

Xavier froze as he stared at the divorce agreement. His lips moved, but no words came out. He hurriedly contacted his assistant and finally found out where Evan was hospitalized. But when he finally rushed over, a nurse stopped him. The doctor said Evan was still in critical condition. Xavier tried to enter the intensive care unit, but the nurse blocked his way, saying it wasn't visiting hours yet. "I'm his father!" Xavier cried, his voice trembling with anxiety. The nurse glanced at the registration records. "I'm not so sure about that," she replied bluntly. "The hospital tried to reach Evan's father all night, but no one answered. You still can't go in outside visiting hours. Then we'll need to verify your identity."Xavier stilled in the hallway, clenching his fists as he looked at me. "I didn't know it was this serious," he said, his voice hoarse. I kept my eyes on Evan through the glass. "By the time you found out, it was already too late."The color drained from
