Chapter 7: The Dinner

Aurelia's POV

The dress was midnight blue, backless, chosen because Vivienne had specifically told me to wear something that "wouldn't embarrass the family in front of the board." I zipped it myself. Cassian hadn't come home in time to help, and some petty, wounded part of me hadn't texted him to remind him.

The private dining room at Blackthorne Global had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan, the city lit up gold and white below us like something out of a postcard nobody in this family actually stopped to look at.

Board members clustered near the bar, waiters moved through with trays of champagne no one was drinking fast enough.

Cassian found me the second I walked in, his hand landing at the small of my back like a claim staked in front of witnesses.

"You look beautiful," he said, close to my ear.

"You're late," I said back, not unkindly. Just true.

"I know, I'm sorry. The Henderson account...."

"It's fine, Cassian."

It wasn't, but saying so at a table full of board members felt like handing them a weapon.

That's when the room shifted.

I felt it before I saw it.....the way conversations dipped half a register, the way three separate women near the bar turned at once like they'd been magnetized. I didn't have to look to know who'd walked in.

I looked anyway.

Kael wore black tonight instead of the charcoal suit from the lobby, and somehow that made it worse......sharper, more deliberate, like he'd dressed for a war he hadn't told anyone he was fighting. He said something to a board member, easy, unbothered, and then his eyes found mine across the room like they'd been aimed there the whole time.

Cassian's hand tightened, just slightly, against my back.

"Behave," he murmured, and I couldn't tell if he meant it as a joke.

*****

Dinner was seated, which was worse. Cassian at the head of the table, Vivienne to his right, me to his left.....and Kael directly across from me, close enough that our knees could have brushed under the table if either of us had been careless enough to move an inch.

We were not careless. We were, in fact, unbearably careful, which somehow made it worse.

"Kael tells me the Singapore office finally signed off," Cassian said, cutting into his steak. "Took them long enough."

"They wanted concessions we couldn't give," Kael said. "I told them no twice before they believed I meant it."

"That's one way to run a negotiation."

"It's the only way that works." Kael's eyes flicked to me for half a second before returning to his brother, so brief I might have imagined it if my whole body hadn't tensed.. "You learn that fast, working overseas. People respect the word 'no' a lot more than they respect a maybe."

"Is that so." Vivienne's voice cut in, smooth as poured cream. "How fortunate for you. Some of us find *maybe* has its uses."

"Only if you intend to change your answer eventually, Mrs. Blackthorne." Kael's tone didn't shift at all. "Otherwise it's just a slower way of saying no."

Something tightened around Vivienne’s mouth. She didn’t like being spoken to that way, she didn’t like it from anyone, especially from a man she had never been able to control.

Under the table, my knee moved without my permission, an inch closer to where he sat.

I stopped myself before contact. Barely.

"Aurelia's been wonderful with the gala planning," Cassian said, oblivious, reaching for his wine. "You two should coordinate. Kael's division is sponsoring half the guest list."

The table went very still, in the specific way a room goes still when four people are pretending something isn't happening in front of a fifth who has no idea.

"I'd be glad to," Kael said, perfectly professional and perfectly composed.

I made myself say, "That would be helpful," in a voice that came out steadier than I felt.

Under the table, his knee brushed mine. Deliberate this time....just once then gone, like it had never happened at all.

I nearly dropped my fork.

*****

After dinner, the room broke into smaller clusters....

board members drifting toward Cassian with questions about quarterly numbers, Vivienne holding court near the windows with two women I didn't recognize.

I stepped out onto the small private terrace off the dining room, needing air, needing distance from a table where my own knee had betrayed me in front of God and everyone.

I wasn't alone for long.

"You looked like you needed rescuing in there," Kael said, closing the terrace door behind him.

"I looked fine."

"You looked like a woman who'd rather be anywhere else." He walked over and stood beside me at the railing, close enough that I could smell the clean, subtle scent of his cologne, close enough that I was suddenly very aware of the small space between us.

"I'd know. I spent four years perfecting the same expression in board meetings I didn't want to be in."

"Is that supposed to be funny?"

"It's supposed to be honest." He looked out at the skyline instead of at me, which somehow made it easier to breathe. "I shouldn't have done that. Under the table."

"No," I agreed. "You shouldn't have."

"I'm not going to apologize for it."

I turned to look at him, and he was already looking at me, the city lights behind him seemed to fade away, and for a moment, nothing else mattered.

"You should," I said, "before someone in that room notices what you just admitted to me."

"Someone already did."

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

"Vivienne," he said quietly, nodding toward the glass door behind us. "She's been watching this terrace for the last ninety seconds."

I didn't turn around, I didn't need to. I could feel her eyes on the back of my neck like a hand pressed flat against my spine, patient, cold, already calculating exactly what she thought she'd just seen.

Aurelia's POVCassian came back to us just as Robert Ellison walked away to join another conversation, his laughter still echoing behind him."There you are." Cassian said it to Kael, not to me, his eyes barely touching mine before moving on. "Robert mention the Q3 numbers? He's been cornering half the room about international all night.""He did." Kael's voice stayed even. "Also mentioned he hadn't met Aurelia yet. Took care of that for you."Something flickered across Cassian's face, quick and hard to name. "Should've done that myself.""You usually remember."It wasn't sharp, the way Kael said it....just plain, but plain landed harder than sharp would have, and I watched it land."I've had a lot on my plate this week," Cassian said, jaw tightening slightly."I know. I didn't say otherwise.""Didn't have to." Cassian reached for a glass of wine off a passing tray, took a slow sip, his eyes flicking toward the cluster of investors near the bar before coming back to his brother. "Robe

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 18: The Introduction He Forgot

Aurelia's POVThe final walkthrough went well, and even Vivienne didn't have much to complain about, Diane confirmed that all the vendors were on schedule, and the venue coordinator went over the layout with us twice. By the time we left, I finally felt a little calmer than I had in days, that steadiness didn't survive the evening.Cassian had a reception that night.....a smaller affair than the gala itself, thrown by one of the firm's longtime investors to celebrate some milestone I hadn't fully followed the details of. He had asked me to come with him almost as an afterthought, his invitation felt less like a request and more like an instruction on his schedule.Wear the navy dress. Investors like it when the wives attend.I wore the navy one anyway.....some habits took longer to unlearn than others. The event was held in a private room at one of the city's older hotels, all dark wood and low lighting, the kind of room built to make important men feel even more important than they

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 17: What Shrinking Costs

Aurelia's POVI didn't sleep well after the dinner. I lay awake replaying Vivienne's voice at the table.....*these things happen, some women simply take longer than others*.....and Cassian's silence sitting right beside it, just as loud in its own way.By the time I gave up trying to sleep, it was almost eleven. I sat up against the headboard, phone in hand, and called Rosa without really deciding to, she picked up on the second ring, her voice thick with sleep she hadn't bothered pretending she wasn't in."Aurelia? It's nearly eleven. What's wrong?"And that was all it took, the dam I'd been holding up all evening simply gave out."She did it again," I said, my voice breaking halfway through the sentence. "In front of guests this time.....Bianca's mother, the garden committee women....all of them, sitting there while Vivienne asked the whole table why I still haven't given Cassian a child, like it's a factual question anyone's entitled to an answer to.""Oh, sweetheart.""And Cassian

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 16: Going Home

Aurelia's POVI stayed at Rosa's longer than I meant to, long enough that the soup went cold twice and she reheated it once, refusing to let me leave on an empty stomach even after everything I'd just handed her to carry."You'll tell me if it gets worse," she said at the door, holding both my hands in hers. "Whatever worse looks like. You won't try to carry it alone just to spare me.""I promise.""You say that so easily, I taught you better than that." She squeezed my hands once, hard, then let go. "Go on. Before it gets dark."The drive back to the estate felt longer than usual, the kind of quiet that gave a person too much room to think. I kept turning over the look on her face when I'd said his name.....Cassian's brother.Rosa had repeated, like the words themselves didn't fit together properly in her mouth, she'd known Kael....she'd loved him, in the careful, protective way she loved anyone I brought into her house. And now she knew exactly how impossible the whole thing had bec

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 15: The One Who Knew

Aurelia's POVI went to Rosa's the next afternoon, mostly because I needed somewhere that didn't feel like it was watching me.I sat at her small kitchen table, the same table where I used to do my homework as a child. In front of me was the same chipped blue mug that had always been mine. She poured soup into two bowls and sat across from me then she waited, just as she always did, she never asked questions directly. Instead, she let the silence encourage me to open up on my own."There's my girl," she said, wiping her hands on her apron and pulling me into a hug that smelled like flour and lavender. "You look like you haven't eaten a proper meal in a week.""I've eaten.""Standing up, alone, at a kitchen counter doesn't count as a proper meal, Aurelia." She pulled back and studied my face the way she always did, like she was reading something written just beneath the skin. "Sit. I made soup."I sat at her small kitchen table, the same one I'd done homework at as a girl, the same chi

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 14: The Laugh That Gave Us Away

Aurelia's POVI said yes to Thursday. I told myself it was only because the florist's price would lock in otherwise, and that was true enough to let me believe it, even if it wasn't the whole truth. The meeting was at Blackthorne Global, a small room on the thirty-second floor with sample centerpieces spread across the table.....white roses, deep green foliage, tall glass vases that caught the overhead light and scattered it across the walls. Priya had already gone through half the options with the florist by the time I arrived, and Kael was standing near the window, sleeves rolled, looking like a man who had absolutely nowhere else he'd rather be."You made it," he said."I told you I would.""You also told me you'd think about it for two days before deciding. That was one email.""I'm efficient when the price is about to lock in."He almost smiled at that, and something in my chest eased at the sight of it, the tightness Vivienne had left behind in the gazebo finally starting to lo
