Chapter 4

Author: Bald No Shampoo
As I was led out of the death-row dungeon, the first light of dawn was just beginning to break on the horizon.

A crowd of commoners packed the area outside the execution grounds. Some hurled rotten vegetable leaves at the prisoner cart. Others cursed Mabel, accusing her of relying on the backing of the Vice Minister of the Court of Judicial Review to escape the consequences of killing the young Prince.

A stinky, rotten egg struck me on the temple. The yolk and white trickled down my cheek, mixed with my blood, but I made no move to wipe it away.

They were right to curse at me. Mabel had intended to escape punishment. It was just that I—not her—ended up bearing the insults and facing execution.

At the entrance to the execution grounds, an imperial envoy verified the documents signed by Arthur. My identification papers, fingerprints, and prisoner identification tag were laid out on a table.

He asked me, "Do you have any objections, Mabel Sinclair?"

I opened my mouth, but only a hoarse, wheezing sound escaped. A jailer pressed my head down and said, "Sir, she'd been making such a racket in the dungeon that she damaged her voice."

I shook my head frantically. I used my fingers, raw and chafed from iron chains, to scratch my last name, "Montgomery", into the ground.

But before I could even finish spelling it out, the Princess Consort of Prince Ezra stepped onto the viewing platform.

She was dressed in black mourning clothes, clutching her son's amulet close to her chest. When her gaze fell on me, there was no warmth in her eyes.

"When Mabel struck and killed my son, did she ever give him a chance to explain?" she asked in a cold voice. "Proceed with the execution immediately."

The command was given out, and the jailers dragged me onto the execution platform.

I cast a final glance toward the pavilion next to where the execution was being overseen. It was draped in festive colors and wedding flowers, and I could even hear faint music as the wind carried it to my ears.

In the end, Arthur didn't come to save me. He had promised to come for me as soon as the wedding ceremony was over. But then again, he had said the same thing every single time before.

"Wait until Mabel is done crying."

"Wait until Mabel recovers from her illness."

"Wait until Mabel is no longer afraid."

"Just wait a little longer, Victoria," he would always say.

I had waited for seven years. But what awaited me in the end, however, was a guillotine.

Seeing my wrists slick with blood, the old jailer quietly loosened my chains by half an inch. He then asked me, "Is there anything else you wish to leave for your family?"

I reached toward my hair.

Mabel had already taken most of my accessories from me. All I had that remained was a single silver hairpin from Mother.

I handed the hairpin and the shattered jade locket to the old jailer. Then, dipping my fingers into the blood pooling in my palm, I scrawled a few lines on the hem of my robe.

"Marriage voided. Send hairpin home. Not bury with Pembertons."

The old jailer's eyes reddened as he read the words.

"Is Lord Pemberton your husband?"

I shook my head.

From the moment he pressed his official seal onto that document, he was no longer my husband.

The executioner gave the blade one last sharpening, and I was soon removed from my shackles before being locked into place at the bottom of the guillotine.

I bowed my head, letting the weight of my body lean against the cold wooden block.

…

At that very moment, the wedding ceremony reached its final stage in the courtyard next door. At the end of the ceremony, Mabel's eyes turned red as she asked Arthur, "Do you think that Victoria is still angry with me?"

Arthur wiped a speck of dust away from her cheek.

"Don't worry. Victoria is just struggling to come to terms with things for now. Just try to be a bit more patient with her when I bring her back later, okay?"

Mabel leaned into his embrace. "Will you ever regret marrying me today?"

Arthur was silent for a long moment.

"No, I won't."

The final beat of the execution drum echoed across the grounds.

The guillotine blade flashed in the morning light.

I closed my eyes.

This time, I wouldn't have to wait for Arthur any longer.

…

Third-Person POV

Just as Arthur set down his glass of red wine, an official from the Court of Judicial Review stumbled into the wedding hall. He had been running so frantically that he nearly collided with the altar before dropping to his knees.

Arthur frowned. "Why are you so panicked?"

The official, his face drained of all color, held out the execution order—stamped with the official seal—in his trembling hands.

"Lord Pemberton! The imperial envoy has carried out the execution, following the identity you verified!"

Arthur's hand froze against the wine glass.

"Didn't I tell you to stall them until I arrived?"

The subordinate looked up, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

"But the imperial decree forbade any delay, Lord Pemberton! Lady Montgomery was executed at dawn. Her body remains at the execution ground, awaiting collection by her family."

The wine glass slipped from Arthur's grasp. Crystal shards scattered across the floor.

"Who did you say has been executed?"

A month later, the imperial decree was issued.Mabel was sentenced to beheading, as originally ruled. Before her execution, she wept and begged to see Arthur, but he didn't go to see her.Apparently, she kept protesting her innocence, but she was indeed the one who struck and killed Prince Ezra's heir, suppressed the news, and wore my wedding gown to the wedding ceremony. There was no one left to take the blame for her.Meanwhile, Arthur was punished with 60 strokes of the whip, exiled three thousand miles away, and barred from ever holding official office again. It was drizzling on the day he left the city.Bertha returned from the market and told me the convoy of prisoners would pass by East Street just outside the Montgomery family estate later today. She stood at the kitchen doorway, watching me for a moment."Are you truly not going to take a look, my lady?"I sat by the window, repairing the vanity case Mother left me. The brass lock had rusted, jamming whenever I tried t

After leaving the Ministry of Justice, I returned to the Pemberton family estate. The wedding decorations on the gate hadn't been fully taken down yet, and as the wind stirred, a torn fragment of flower garland—made from bright, jarringly red roses—fluttered in the breeze.Bertha reached up and tore it away."How could they continue to hold a wedding at the cost of a young lady's life? Weren't they the least bit scared of getting nightmares in the dead of the night?"The government officers went through my list of missing items, one by one, helping me to recover them. As it turned out, the missing pearl was in Mabel's vanity case, and the brocade had already been cut into a new dress for her, so they could only offer monetary compensation for its value.I touched the gold bangle Father left me, turning it around my wrist, which now fit. I also placed Mother's pearl tiara back in its wooden box, which I entrusted to Bertha to carry.Arthur's mother, Flora Sterling, stood under th

The Ministry of Justice reopened the case just two weeks later. My throat still ached quite badly. Whenever I spoke too quickly, it would feel as though I had swallowed a mouthful of broken glass.Bertha helped me sit in the courtroom and placed a cup of warm water within reach, while Mabel kneeled on the other side. She had taken off my wedding gown and was now clad in a drab, grey prisoner's uniform instead. The apothecary owner was brought in first. He said, "The mute-inducing potion was purchased by the butler from the Pemberton household, my lord. The dosage was quite potent. I even warned them that consuming it could damage the vocal cords."The butler subsequently confessed that Arthur had ordered him to swap out my identification documents and place Mabel's prisoner identification tag on me. The servant who delivered the message also recounted the events that took place before dawn.Faced with all the testimonies, Mabel continued to weep and say, "I only stopped him from

Arthur took a step forward toward me, but I immediately retreated. In my haste, I knocked over a medicine bowl beside the physician, and shards of porcelain scattered across the floor. He stopped short. "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."Those words were truly laughable coming from his lips.I lowered my gaze to the deep red welts around my wrists. He saw them too. He said, "Victoria, I really thought that I could hold them off. I thought I could stall them. I never intended for you to die.I opened my mouth, but only a fractured, broken sound escaped my throat."The drums…"He froze.I pointed toward the execution grounds and repeated myself. "The drums."I knew he had heard them when he affixed the seal onto the verification documents. He just didn't care or think much about it.Arthur's shoulders slowly slumped."I heard them," he admitted quietly. "But I thought that they wouldn't dare lay a hand on you if I managed to rush there in time."I looked at him. It wasn

Victoria's POVI woke to a searing pain in the back of my neck, as if my head were splitting apart. The chains on my wrists had been removed. Next to me, a matron, who was most likely a prison physician, helped me sit up and brought a spoonful of warm water to my lips."Drink slowly," she said. "The blade didn't touch you. It got caught halfway through. But you were so terrified and already lost so much blood that you just lost consciousness after that."I reached up to touch my neck. There was nothing there but a red welt, left by the shackles of the guillotine board holding me in place.Just as the final execution order was about to be carried out, the old jailer had delivered my blood-written plea to the presiding official.Upon seeing the words "Marriage voided" and recalling that I had once traced the Montgomery name on the ground, the imperial envoy immediately ordered a halt to the execution.Luckily, the blade had been able to be stopped in time, but I lost consciousnes

Arthur stared at his subordinate, forcing his voice through gritted teeth. The subordinate remained kneeling on the ground, not daring to look up as he replied, "I-It's Lady Montgomery… "The imperial envoy ordered me to return with a message, saying that she left a final wish before her execution that her remains must never be interred in the Pemberton family ancestral grave."Arthur seized him by the collar."Impossible," he growled. "I gave explicit orders to stall the execution until I arrived. Who authorized the executioner to strike?"The subordinate gasped, struggling for air."It was an imperial decree, Lord Pemberton! Nobody dared to stall a decree from the King himself! And the official review document bore your own seal."Arthur's hand froze.A terrifying silence descended upon the wedding hall. The flush drained from Mabel's face, bit by bit. She stepped forward to pull at him and said, "Arthur… Perhaps Victoria is merely injured. Why not send someone to verify the
