Chapter 3

Author: Raw Fish
Everyone at the table froze. Joshua was holding back his anger. "What does that mean, Robin?"

Mom set down her cutlery and looked at him without a flicker of emotion. "What I mean is that Mom and Dad left me the company. It has nothing to do with the Finches."

With that, she carried me straight back to the bedroom, leaving the others looking alternately pale and furious. It was almost comical.

Back in the room, Mom pulled a thick photo album from the cabinet. Inside were pictures of Grandpa Philip and Grandma Eloise when they were young and a smiling Mom.

I knew she had once been the daughter of a wealthy tycoon, living in glory. However, ever since a car accident took Grandpa Philip away and caused Grandma Eloise to be in a vegetative state, Mom's world collapsed.

"Don't be sad, Mom. That wasn't an accident, actually. It was Joshua, that bastard, who orchestrated it! He wanted to wipe out your family!

"You spent all these years taking care of his family and those six brats, working as a housewife for him. Now, he controls the company. It'll be too hard to fight back at this point."

I watched her tears fall, drop by drop, onto the photo album. My heart ached. She closed the album and wiped her eyes dry.

The next day, Mom appeared like a completely different person. She slipped into a sharp, professional suit and carried me in her arms.

Looking straight at Joshua while he was eating breakfast, she said, "I've been stuck at home for years, and I'm bored. I'm going back to the office."

He nearly choked on his milk. "You're going back? You haven't worked in years. What can you even do there?"

She rebuked, "The company is, after all, Mom and Dad's life's work. Isn't it only fair for me to check in?"

Joshua's face twisted. He tried to come up with a reason to stop her, but none of them stuck. "But I've been managing the company, haven't I? You should just stay home and look after the kids."

Mom smiled. "What, do I need your permission to return to my own company?"

He was left speechless.

From the side, the vile hag sneered. "A woman should stay home, raising children. What would people say if they saw you strutting around outside?"

Mom didn't even spare her a glance. When she arrived at the company, everyone was shocked.

Joshua's secretary, a young, beautiful woman, rushed over to greet Mom, clearly startled. "M-Ms. Chapman, you're here…"

"Oh, look. Isn't this the mistress' niece? Planted at Joshua's side—a secretary on paper but actually a spy. No wonder the company's accounts are a mess. Who knows how much they've embezzled already?"

Mom gave the secretary a cool glance and walked straight toward the CEO's office. Along the way, several veteran employees recognized her and rushed over excitedly.

"Ms. Chapman, you're finally back!"

"Pete Nicholson, Finance Director, Grandpa Philip's loyal subordinate. He's been sidelined by Joshua all these years… Leroy Hills, Marketing Manager—also one of us—has been elbowed out badly…

"And that guy in the floral shirt? Joshua's lapdog, HR Manager. Who knows how many of their people he's planted in the company?"

Mom greeted the veteran employees with a smile.

During the meeting, Joshua subtly signaled to a few of his cronies. They launched into a long-winded report, painting a picture of perfect profits and growth.

"That doesn't add up. If the past few quarters were that good, why is the profit margin for the third phase so low?" Mom asked, tapping the table.

"Ms. Chapman, that's because… Well…"

The group stammered, unable to give a coherent answer. Mom turned to Joshua. "You'd better have an explanation, Mr. Finch."

His face darkened. The pen in his grip was almost about to break. Without bothering with his tantrum, she simply turned and walked out of the meeting room.

Back at home, the first thing Mom did was pull up the company's accounts from the past five years. She held me in her arms, flipping through page after page.

"Why is Mom suddenly so focused on the company? The trajectory is so different from my previous life…"

I let out a big yawn. I couldn't stay awake any longer and drifted into a deep sleep. By the time I came to, Mom was looking at me with eyes that sparkled like they held a secret.

"Whoa! What's with Mom's look? Can she… hear my thoughts?"

She gave me a playful wink. In that moment, my heart leapt with joy.

"No way! She can actually hear me! This is amazing! Together, we'll be unstoppable! This time, we're going to make those scumbags regret everything they've ever done!"

A week later, Mom took me for a routine checkup. On the way back, a van suddenly swerved in front of our car, forcing us to stop. The doors swung open, and several masked teenagers jumped out, holding sticks. It was the six ungrateful brats. They quickly overpowered our driver and tried to get Mom and me into their van.I froze in fear. "Mom, it's them! What are they doing?"Mom held me tightly. Though her face was pale, her eyes were strangely calm. "It's okay, Meadow. I'm right here."The van rattled along rough roads and finally stopped at an abandoned warehouse. Inside, Joshua and the vile hag were already waiting. When she saw us, she broke into a grin, showing her yellowed teeth."Well, Robin, didn't expect to see us again, did you?"Joshua's glare was full of anger and frustration. He held out a document, then flung it in Mom's way. "Sign the agreement to transfer the shares, and we'll set you free."I looked at their sneering faces and felt a wave of disgust. "A bunch of

"He did it! He signed it! That idiot just sold himself and is even celebrating!" I rolled around on the bed, laughing so hard. After signing, Joshua received his first task—steal the core data from Project New West. The next day, he couldn't wait to get started.Using the pretext of following up on the project, he swaggered into the finance department. "Pull the financial reports for the past three years and all the cash flow going to ongoing projects," he demanded righteously, as if he were the company's owner.Pete, the finance director, was one of Grandpa Philip's subordinates, so naturally, he knew exactly what was going on. He stalled while secretly texting Mom."Mr. Finch, this is confidential information. I can't hand them over without Ms. Chapman's approval."Joshua's face darkened. "How dare you question my authority! Am I your boss, or is she? The company is under my control. Whatever I say is an order!"He was about to grab the laptop himself when the office door swung

The next day, Mom met with a private investigator recommended by Pete. He was a sharp-looking middle-aged man. She got straight to the point."I need you to go undercover and get close to Joshua Finch," she said, sliding a prepared file across the table."This is the role you'll be playing—Andrew Watson, a wealthy overseas investor with a mysterious background and a direct rival of Chapman Group. Your task is to make him believe you want to use him to bring my company down."The investigator flipped through the file, his eyes gradually lighting up. "And the payment?"Mom held up five fingers. His breathing grew heavier. "Don't worry, Ms. Chapman. I'll get the job done."She took out a tiny camera and placed it on the table. "I want a live feed of every meeting you have with him."Everything was arranged down to the last detail."Mom's plan to draw him out is brilliant! I bet that idiot is definitely going to take the bait!"Sure enough, things went smoothly. Before long, "An

Joshua fulfilled his promise. With that swollen, bruised face, he stayed away for several days. Of course, he didn't entirely fade out of me and Mom's lives.Starting on the third day after he left, gifts began pouring into the house nonstop. Flowers, jewelry, and limited-edition bags were piled high in the living room.He also sent long, romantic messages every day, right on time, going on and on about his regret and how much he missed Mom. The scent of those flowers made me sneeze endlessly."He's really going all out, trying to sugarcoat his way back into Mom's good graces."Mom didn't even spare the gifts a glance. She had the bodyguards pack everything up and dump it all at the trash station outside. Then, she made a call."Cancel all of Joshua's supplementary credit cards," she ordered. "And for Project Eastwood, which he's in charge of, review the accounts. Freeze every irregular transaction.""Hooray, Mom! Straight to the root of it, cutting off their lifeline!"That mov

As soon as the six ungrateful brats and the vile hag left, Joshua fell to his knees before Mom and me. He raised his hand and slapped himself hard a few times, the sound echoing through the quiet room."This is all my fault, Robin! I really didn't know they would be this wicked at heart!" he cried out."But don't worry. I'll definitely make this a lesson for them! Mom probably just had a lapse. I'm sure she didn't mean anything bad. Maybe she just wanted to scare Meadow a little!"Wow! Was he serious?"Scare me for what? I almost died from that! Even now, he's still trying to make excuses for them! Mom, get rid of him now!"Joshua crawled toward us, trying to grab Mom's hand. "Robin, let's not get mad about this, alright? From now on, I'll listen to everything you say. Please?""Mom, tell him you want to divorce him! Who needs a man like him?"Mom looked at him from above, then pulled out a document from her bag before flinging it onto the coffee table in front of him. "In that

Just as the wet towel was about to cover my mouth and nose, the bedroom door slammed open.Mom stood in the doorway, her eyes red. Behind her were a few men in suits—Pete and the other veteran employees. She fixed a deadly gaze on me, dangling upside down, and the towel in Alex's hand."What on earth do you think you're doing?" she roared, her voice trembling slightly. The six ungrateful brats froze in terror. Alex let go, and I tumbled onto the carpet."Ouch, my butt! Mom, they almost smothered me!"Mom rushed over and scooped me up, hugging me tight with a mix of relief and worry. The vile hag reacted the fastest, plopping down onto the floor and slapping her thighs. "This is atrocious! We were just trying to play with the baby! What are you trying to insinuate here?"Alex hurried to defend himself. "Mom, it's not what it looks like! We were just trying to reposition her because she looked uncomfortable!"Caleb Finch, the third child, nodded frantically. "T-That's right! The
