Chapter 2

Author: Everwind
I put my arm out to stop McCoy.

“Can this wait until tonight? I want it to be a surprise.”

Unsuspecting, McCoy slipped the list of wishes into his pocket with a smile.

“Sure thing. You’re the boss.

“Hungry? I take it that you haven’t eaten since your discharge. I’ll whip something up for you.

“We’ll head out later to celebrate Teddy’s birthday.”

Raleigh hurried right behind him.

“I’ll make a little sauce to go together with the snack. Moira has to try my cooking.”

Teddy skipped his way into the kitchen.

“I’ll get the plates!”

The trio stepped into the kitchen, brimming with laughter.

Left behind, I watched them look blissfully whole.

They were like one big family.

I let out a wry chuckle.

Ah, well. I supposed I could spend one last birthday with Teddy.

Then, they could be a real family.

The burning pain in my belly intensified.

I retreated to my bedroom and sorted through my belongings.

Ever since I caught McCoy cheating on me, I became very paranoid.

As he wore blue the day he went astray, I burned everything in that shade in our home.

If anything was moved by even an inch in the house, I’d break down and demand to know whether McCoy brought someone home.

Yet now, the once white walls were plastered with blue wallpaper.

The women’s nightgowns hanging on the rack were tailored to Raleigh’s size.

Everything that was mine had been replaced with Raleigh’s preference.

Raleigh’s voice drifted down the hallway outside the door.

“Moira, my lease was up a couple of days ago, so McCoy put me up in your room.

“Your stuff is in the top cabinet. Have a look there.”

Not responding to her, I shifted my gaze to the kitty toothbrush sitting on the bathroom vanity.

It was a matching pair of toothbrushes McCoy and I shared.

Raleigh was lying.

If she was just a guest, the bristles on that toothbrush wouldn’t be frayed and worn down.

The toothbrush certainly wouldn’t be sitting in the same mug, tilted at the same angle as his.

My mind flew back to the day I was admitted to the psychiatric ward.

Raleigh had promised me through her tears.

“Just focus on getting better, Moira.

“I’ll watch over McCoy and Teddy and take good care of them for you.”

It was true that she kept her word.

Raleigh was never once absent in those thousand-odd days.

She took care of their needs.

More than that, she filled their lives in my place.

Shoving the bitterness down my throat, I pulled open the closet to pack my stuff.

The laptop chimed relentlessly with notifications.

I was about to turn it off when my gaze fell on the texts on screen. I stopped dead in my tracks.

“Mr. Evans, I’ve generated today’s love letter using AI and sent it to your missus.”

When I was first admitted, I couldn’t stand to be trapped in the cold, lifeless ward every day.

I begged and cried to be let out.

To calm me down, McCoy promised to write me every day.

The pages were filled with remorse, longing, and all the love he claimed he still felt for me.

Through countless sleepless nights, I read those letters until the words healed me inside.

1,000 letters bore witness to 1,000 tearful moments.

Everything turned out to be a cruel joke played at my expense.

The searing pain burned through my stomach lining.

That familiar feeling of suffocation came crashing over me, as though an invisible hand was closing around my throat.

Without thinking, I grabbed the knife on the table and cut myself.

Blood trickled down my arm as the pain eased the tightening around my throat.

Then, Teddy’s cries burst in my ears.

The knife in my hand was snatched away.

McCoy shoved me onto the bed roughly.

He wrapped the bandage around my wrist as he had done so many times before.

I snapped out of my trance.

Gripping my chin, McCoy pressed my head against the headboard.

His red-rimmed eyes allowed a stray tear to track across my cheek.

“Moira, I’ve put up with your illness for three years. Isn’t that enough?

“Do you hate me that much that you’d rather die?”

Stuck in a daze, I reached up to brush the tear away.

My knuckles grazed across his chest, catching the rough line of a scar.

That was the worst I’d ever injured myself. McCoy, his eyes bloodshot, stabbed himself in the chest.

“I’m the one who failed you, Moira. If you go, I’m coming with you.”

A ripple stirred in the heart that had long since gone still.

I softened my voice.

“McCoy, I just—”

Then came Raleigh’s shriek outside the door.

“Oh, no! McCoy, Teddy’s passed out from seeing all the blood!”

McCoy retrieved a photo album. Its pages were filled with the magazine covers I had graced back in the day. I was stunned for a moment, as I had spent ages looking for it without success. Here I thought the album was long gone. As it turned out, McCoy had it secretly tucked away. Teddy flipped through the album, tracing his fingers across my face in each picture. A teardrop fell on the photo, spreading out like a blossom. Panicked, Teddy scrambled to rub the wet spot off the picture. “No… I can’t mess up Mommy’s face.” McCoy’s eyes welled up. I simply watched the scene callously. A helpless sigh escaped my lips. The next day, Raleigh stood trial in the courtroom. The charges against her were medical fraud and manslaughter in connection with my death. Raleigh knew she had no way out. That was when she decided to spill everything she and McCoy had been up to for the past three years in front of the press. “McCoy, don’t act like you’re some sort of saint.

Not long after, McCoy filed a lawsuit against Raleigh. Later that day, there was a loud knock on the door. McCoy opened the door. Raleigh threw herself at McCoy. Judging by the hospital gown she was wearing, Raleigh likely bolted from the hospital. Her face was white, and her cries were heart-wrenching. “I messed up, McCoy. I was wrong. “After everything we shared over four years, can you please forgive me?”Raleigh pulled out a ring, and the object stung me. The ring was identical to the one McCoy had given to me. Back then, McCoy told me with a smile that it was called the “Forgiveness Ring.”If we were to fight and I got him upset, I would just show him the ring. It would be his cue to let everything go. Delighted, I was on board with the idea. Little did I know, the ring wasn’t exclusive to me. Raleigh owned one too. McCoy shuddered. Picking up on his hesitation, Raleigh pleaded hysterically, “McCoy, Moira was my best friend. Her death isn’t entirely

“Why should I do that? The baby’s mine too! I’m not getting an abortion!” McCoy didn’t even look at Raleigh, his tone flat. “You don’t have a choice. “If you hadn’t pulled this stunt, I would’ve bought you a mansion, so you could’ve focused on the pregnancy. “Our child would have had a chance to grow up happy and healthy.” McCoy paused. With Moira gone, his heart had died alongside her. Sure enough, humans were strange creatures. When he had her, he took her love for granted. Now that he lost her, the only thing on his mind was to make things right. Seeing that McCoy was dead serious, Raleigh panicked. She pulled the quiet Teddy to her side and pleaded tearfully, “Aren’t I your favorite person, Teddy?“I’ll buy you lots of candy and toys. Just tell your Daddy to stop. “My life will be ruined if I were to go to prison!” Teddy didn’t give in to her pleading like before. His tear-streaked face darkened as Teddy pried her fingers off him one by one. “Daddy t

Raleigh’s heart sank. In fact, there was something off about Moira’s lab work. However, she had the numbers altered without taking a good look. Either way, Raleigh only wanted to see if McCoy’s trust remained unconditional. It was about time to put Moira in her place as well. Better yet, Moira should step aside as Mrs. Evans. It was never her intention to push Moira to her grave. Raleigh squeezed a smile. “McCoy, this isn’t funny. Moira was fine a minute ago. Why would she be dead?” McCoy peeled back his jacket, showing the box of my belongings and the death certificate. The official certification on the death certificate hit Raleigh like a blade. Dread washed over Raleigh, and her hands trembled violently. She fought desperately to swallow the panic down. “McCoy, we can talk about this at home. “I left something at the hospital. You can take Teddy home while I go ahead and grab it.”Raleigh scrambled her way to the hospital. She grabbed hold of a nurse.

The cake in McCoy’s hand dropped to the floor with a splat. Before he could squeeze out a word, the call was cut off. A text with an address arrived promptly. Hearing the commotion, Raleigh and Teddy rushed over. They noticed the cake lying on the ground, smashed. Teddy teased him. “You’re so silly, Daddy. You can’t even hold a cake right.” McCoy lost his balance. Flustered, Raleigh went up and helped him to his feet. “McCoy, are you alright? Press the call bell, Teddy!” Teddy scrambled onto the bed and hit the emergency buzzer frantically. The voices around him sounded distant and muffled. McCoy barely managed to steady himself and pull himself back to reality. He stumbled out the door. Raleigh cried out to him in the back. Not once did he look back, for his mind was consumed by Moira. Out of the hospital, McCoy put the pedal to the metal and sped toward the funeral home. He didn’t care about the red lights he ran through along the way. His palms on

McCoy stuck by me at the hospital, his eyes holding no concern. All that remained was disappointment. “Moira, your lab results came back fine. What are you trying to pull now? “So I yelled at you. It’s Teddy’s birthday today. Did you have to pass out in front of him to traumatize him? “Had I known you’d turn out like this, I wouldn’t have married you in the first place!” The medical report slapped against my face, leaving a stinging burn behind. The numbers on the sheet were as fake as could be. However, upon catching McCoy’s revulsion in his eyes, I lost the will to explain myself. Forget it. Maybe it was better this way. At least he wouldn’t have to feel bad and pity me. I should congratulate McCoy as he was about to get what he wanted. Probably noticing his harsh tone, McCoy toned it down a little. “Anyway, you should take some time to yourself. “I’m going back to cut the cake with Teddy. I’ll come back for you later.” McCoy then left the ward without loo
