Chapter 3

Author: Nine Maples
"See?" Daryl looked at me with an expression that all but said I told you so. "Sometimes cutting your losses early is the smarter choice."

I nodded in agreement. "Yeah. I guess it was time to cut my losses."

He seemed pleased with my response and, for once, praised me. "You'd be so much easier to deal with if you were always this well-behaved."

We paid the bill and stepped outside. Snow drifted down under the streetlights in thick, feathery flakes.

Brooke and I stood side by side while Daryl positioned himself in front of her, shielding her from the wind. The cold cut across my face like a blade, and I couldn't stop shivering.

Daryl fastened the last button on Brooke's coat, then stepped over to me. He unwound his own scarf and wrapped it around my neck.

"It's late. It's not safe for Bee to walk home alone this late. I'll see her back. Go home, get some rest, don't wait up for me."

Brooke lived in the opposite direction, though about the same distance away.

I hesitated, then called out to him. "Daryl."

He was already taking Brooke's hand and heading down the steps. My voice was swallowed up by the howling wind.

The ground had iced over and was treacherously slick. The distance was too short, just over half a mile, so no car would take the fare. After weighing my options, I decided to walk.

Half a mile wasn't far. But with snow falling, wind cutting at me, and ice underfoot, it turned into something brutal.

Snow soaked my hair, and the wind scraped my face raw. I fell, got up, fell again, got up again. I lost count of how many times it happened. My hands and my backside were both bruised from hitting the pavement.

I finally stumbled through the gate of my apartment complex. The second I stepped inside, my foot slipped, and I went down again.

I was still catching my breath, about to push myself up, when my phone rang. Daryl.

"Elizabeth, the roads are icy and wet out here. If I weren't with her, there's no telling how many times Bee would've fallen by now."

My eyes stung.

"Bee decided she'd rather just stay at a hotel tonight instead of heading back. It's not safe for a girl to stay at a hotel alone, so I'm staying with her. Just letting you know. Don't wait up."

"Daryl, come dry my hair for me."

Brooke's voice drifted through the phone.

"Daryl." My voice cracked before I could stop it.

I finally asked the question I hadn't been able to get out back at the fondue place.

"Have you ever once considered that I'm a girl too? That I'm your girlfriend? Is it safe for me to walk home alone on roads this wet and icy? Did it cross your mind that I might fall?"

All that answered me was the howling wind.

Brooke wanted him to dry her hair, so he hung up without waiting for me to finish.

I braced my hands against the snow. My tears fell into it, melting small pits into the surface.

My phone rang again. It was my mother.

"Lizzie, aren't you bringing Daryl home for dinner tomorrow? I wanted to ask what he likes to eat so I can go shopping first thing in the morning."

I clamped my hand over my mouth, holding back a sob.

"Lizzie?"

It took me a while to steady my voice. "Mom, he's not coming."

At the dinner table, I told my parents about the three-year overseas assignment to Zwinterland. They both froze for a moment before it registered.

"So sudden?"

It wasn't sudden at all, really. When the project had first been greenlit, I'd been the top candidate for the assignment. I just hadn't said yes, because of Daryl.

"How long?"

"Three years."

The room went quiet for a couple of seconds. My mother looked at me, worry in her eyes. "Lizzie, did the two of you fight because Daryl doesn't want you to go?"

"That has to be it," my father said, frowning, letting out a soft sigh. "It's understandable if he doesn't want you to. A young woman, all alone in a foreign country for three whole years, of course he'd be worried."

Daryl worried about Brooke walking home alone at night. He worried about her staying at a hotel by herself. But it had never once occurred to him that I might need the same concern.

My phone rang. It was Daryl.

I let it ring for a moment before I answered.

"Where are you?"

"At my parents'."

There were two seconds of silence on the other end.

"Weren't we supposed to go together?"

I checked the time. We'd agreed on eight in the morning. It was almost eleven, and he was only just now remembering he was supposed to come with me.

"Bee caught a cold. I took her to the hospital, and after her IV, I made her ginger soup. I lost track of time. Apologize to your parents for me. I'll go see them with you over the holidays."

"Sure."

The call ended. Brooke's social media post popped up right after, no caption, just a photo. Her parents sat close together on a sofa, with Daryl and Brooke leaning in from behind, their shoulders pressed against her parents'. It looked exactly like a family portrait.

Within minutes, the comments rolled in.

[Family photo?]

[Are you two back together?]

[Elizabeth must be crying her eyes out right now.]

I wasn't crying. I pressed a hand to my chest and felt no pain there at all.

My phone buzzed. Vincent had sent over the flight details for my departure, two days from now, first thing in the morning.

Daryl lowered his head, his voice catching. "I was wrong. I'm sorry. Come back with me. I'll change, I promise."He reached for my hand again, and I pulled away, cold."Daryl, not every mistake gets a second chance. We're done. Completely.""No. We're not done." His voice rose sharply, trembling. "Elizabeth, I know I was wrong, and I've promised to change. I flew all the way to Zwinterland to find you. Can't you give me one more chance?"My refusal was firm. "No."He looked at me, and after a moment, his eyes went red."Elizabeth, I know I was wrong. Badly wrong. I understand if you don't want to forgive me easily. But I'm not giving up. I'll show you I can change."That night, after a long day of work, I made myself a cup of coffee. My phone rang. It was Brooke.I hesitated for a while before answering."Lizzie, we're best friends. Can't you just let me have Daryl?"Brooke called us best friends, and in the same breath used that friendship to guilt me into handing over my ow

The car pulled into the underground garage and the engine cut off. Daryl didn't get out. He glanced at his phone. Eight at night. Only three hours had passed since five that afternoon.Just three hours? Daryl had never known three hours could feel this long.He thought back to the fondue place two days ago. Elizabeth had taken the day off and stood in line for six hours for that meal. How had she gotten through six hours that dull? He'd never once asked if she was thirsty, hungry, or cold the whole time. When she'd pushed back on his demand to switch to Cajun food instead, he'd even accused her of throwing a tantrum. How had he been such an ass?Daryl lit a cigarette. Then another, and another. Cigarette butts piled up around him, and still he didn't want to get out of the car. He didn't want to go up. Or maybe the truth was, he didn't dare to.Unease built up inside him. Some part of him sensed that this time, whatever this was with Elizabeth, it wasn't just another tantr

Yesterday's fondue platters still sat on the table. Daryl went to clear them away. He gathered the leftovers together, then stopped short. His eyes landed on the glass of plain water still sitting on the table, the one he'd poured for Elizabeth to cut through the richness. Aside from the temperature, it looked exactly the same as when he'd first pushed it toward her. Not a single trace of grease on it.That was when it hit him. Elizabeth hadn't eaten a single bite. The sight of that untouched glass cut at him. How had he been so careless, not to order even a few platters that weren't smothered in heavy cheese?Once he'd cleared the table, he went into the kitchen and started pulling out ingredients one by one. Rich cheese fondue, a creamy cheese omelet, a baked brie with truffle oil. All of it Brooke's favorites. What did Elizabeth like? She couldn't handle heavy cheese. What else? Beyond that, what else was there?Daryl searched his memory carefully. Two words surfaced. Medite

  • My Love, Your Afterthought   Chapter 6

Third-person POV:Daryl walked in carrying a large bag of groceries and stopped in the entryway to change his shoes."Elizabeth, Bee said she wants a big meal before we leave, something that'll really satisfy our cravings for home cooking. Come help me out."All that answered him was the rustle of him changing his shoes."Elizabeth?"He slipped into his house slippers, carried the groceries into the kitchen, and headed straight for the guest room. The first thing he saw was the cot, empty. Then he noticed the suitcase that had been sitting by the closet was gone too.Daryl froze for a moment.'She'd left?' he wondered. That didn't make sense. Wasn't her flight supposed to be tomorrow morning? He stepped out of the guest room and checked the master bedroom, the bathroom, even the storage room. No sign of Elizabeth anywhere. He walked quickly to the entryway and caught sight of the slippers in the trash can. His face fell, and a flicker of panic crossed his eyes.He muttered

At dinner, Daryl ordered takeout. He'd gotten eight or nine fondue platters, more than the table could really hold.Brooke's eyes lit up. "Daryl, you really know how to order. I'm obsessed with every single one of these."I scanned the spread over and over. In the end, I just picked at a few bites of plain bread and vegetables. Every platter was smothered in a thick layer of melted cheese — the rich, heavy kind that I could barely stomach.A moment later, Daryl slid a glass of water toward me. "Elizabeth, you should try building up a tolerance for rich food. It'd make things a lot less complicated when the three of us eat together."My fork froze halfway to my mouth. Something tightened in my chest, a dull, suffocating weight. There it was again. He remembered every single platter Brooke loved, but somehow could never remember that I couldn't handle heavy cheese at all. He even seemed to think I was the inconvenient one. It was almost funny.I pushed the glass further away. "It w

I got home, pushed open the bedroom door, and froze in place.Daryl and Brooke were lying on their sides on the bed, pressed close together. He heard the door and turned to look at me. "Why are you back? I thought you'd be staying the night."My throat closed up. I couldn't get a single sound out.A moment later, Daryl seemed to realize something. He pulled his hand back from Brooke's stomach, a flash of obvious panic crossing his face."Don't get the wrong idea. Bee's on her period and caught a cold, and the cramps were unbearable. I was just rubbing her stomach to help."I pulled the corners of my mouth into a silent, hollow smile. When my own cramps had once left me curled up on the floor, I'd pressed his hand to my stomach and asked him to do the same for me. He'd pulled his hand back, handed me a cup of hot water instead, and told me I'd feel better if I just drank more of it.My legs felt like they'd been filled with lead. I couldn't make myself move. Daryl pulled me out
