Chapter 7

Amy watered the medicinal plants and pruned the unnecessary branches and leaves meticulously.

The whole thing took her over an hour to complete. It was completely dark by the time she allowed herself to take a break.

These medicinal plants were incredibly precious. They were far more expensive than the ones she had provided to Mr. Hamlin during the day. Even those could already be sold at over twenty thousand dollars. If these seedlings were cultivated to maturity, they would be priceless.

Wiping the sweat from her brow, Amy felt a bit more relaxed. She felt even better when she thought of the two little ones waiting for her at home. A gentle smile soon formed on her face. After packing up her tools and locking the garden gate, she headed home.

Once she arrived home and pushed open the door, she found Night and Star wrapped in towels. They were playing chess with Mrs. Harper, while their two kittens—Rice Ball and Dumpling—were frolicking around excitedly. The scene was filled with warmth and joy.

“You lost again, great-grandmother,” Night declared. He was trying to contain his smile by appearing serious, which made one want to ruffle his hair.

“You’re getting more and more impressive, Night!” Mrs. Harper’s eyes crinkled with laughter. She was proud of her great-grandchildren’s intelligence and logical thinking that were far beyond their years.

Seeing Amy enter, Star called out in her sweet, soft voice, “Mommy’s back!” She then rushed toward Amy.

Night went up to her as well and sensibly offered her a glass of water. “Are you tired, Mommy? Thirsty?”

Amy’s heart melted as she hugged both children. She felt a surge of love fill her heart; she would do anything for them.

The next morning, Amy took Night and Star to kindergarten. Then, she took a cab straight to the Hamlin family’s pharmacy.

The receptionist, Linda, was registering information on the computer. When she saw Amy, she stopped and looked at her in surprise. “Miss Green, do you have new medicinal herbs to deliver today?”

Amy nodded. “Sort of. I have a batch of special medicinal herbs at home that I plan to sell. I’d like to make an appointment with Mr. Hamlin to discuss the matter. Is he available?”

“I’m sorry, Miss Green. Mr. Hamlin has a meeting this morning and is not in the pharmacy. He won’t be back until the afternoon. You might have to come back then,” Linda replied with some regret.

“Is that so?” Amy was a bit disappointed, but she did not let it show too much. “Alright. I’ll come back in the afternoon.” She smiled politely.

There was a door that led to a side lounge in the pharmacy. As she turned to leave, someone suddenly pushed it open with a forceful bang and startled everyone.

Amy stopped in her tracks and turned to look. A tall man with gold-rimmed glasses hurried to the front desk, and his voice was filled with urgency. “Linda, has Mr. Hamlin arrived? Something’s wrong with Mr. Lewis. We need his help immediately!”

Linda was taken aback, but she responded, “What happened to Mr. Lewis? Mr. Hamlin has an appointment today and isn’t in the pharmacy. He won’t be back until noon.”

The man’s expression changed immediately. He did not know what to do.

“Notify Mr. Hamlin immediately. The situation here is urgent. Please ask him to come back as soon as possible!”

“Okay!” Linda immediately took out her phone. She dared not delay the call.

Aiden Lewis was a regular there and a distinguished man. Besides, Mr. Hamlin and Aiden’s father were close friends who had faced life-and-death situations together. They could not let anything happen to him.

Unfortunately, her call did not go through. She could only hear a beeping tone on the phone.

“Mr. Hamlin’s phone is unreachable! What should we do?” she asked in a panic.

Nolan wore a grim look. At this point, they had no choice but to go to the hospital.

He was about to respond when a crashing sound came from the lounge. It sounded like a cup hitting the floor.

Nolan and Linda exchanged glances in shock. Then, they hurried into the lounge to check.
