Chapter 6

작가: Shirley
The instant the scalding soup flew through the air, I moved on pure instinct, throwing myself over Luca to shield him.

"Ahhh!"

Luca's scream tore through the restaurant's elegant atmosphere.

Although I blocked most of it, the hot liquid still splashed onto his pale forearms and chest.

His skin instantly turned a raw, angry red, and blisters began to form.

And the one who did it, Finn, immediately burst into a theatrical wail, playing the victim.

"Mommy! That woman tried to hit me!"

He was completely unharmed, yet he cried more pitifully than Luca. "I was so scared, my hand slipped and I dropped the soup...."

His pathetic lie instantly drew the attention of Santino and Riley as they walked over.

"Finn! My baby!" Riley snatched Finn into her arms, her eyes flashing as she accused me, "Erin, how could you be so cruel? Finn was only trying to share his soup with Luca. Why would you push him?"

I held Luca, who was trembling in pain, my eyes burning with rage.

"Riley, drop the act!" I pointed to Finn's perfectly clean hands. "He did it on purpose! Look! Luca is the one who's burned!"

Santino strode over. When his gaze landed on Luca's angry red blisters, a sharp intake of breath escaped him and he instinctively reached out a hand.

But then his eyes met Riley's.

He stopped, withdrew his hand, and swept the "frightened" Finn into his arms, soothing him gently. "It's okay, Finn. Don't be afraid."

"Erin," he said, turning to me, his voice cold as ice. "When did you become so hysterical? Accusing a child who was only trying to be kind?"

I was so furious I couldn't speak. I pointed at the angry red welts on Luca's arm. "You call this sharing? Santino, are you blind? That soup was boiling!"

"Enough!"

Santino cut me off impatiently. "All I see is you screaming, and Finn terrified of you."

Luca was covered in a cold sweat from the pain, his small hand gripping my clothes, unable to even cry out anymore.

"Mommy, it hurts. It hurts so much."

My heart was bleeding. Santino, that's your son moaning in pain. Can't you hear him?

I didn't have time to argue with them. I scooped Luca up and tried to rush out. "I need to get Luca to a hospital. His burns need to be treated."

Santino glanced at the blisters on Luca's arm, his brow furrowing as if the sight was an ugly inconvenience.

"Leaving so soon?"

"No one is leaving after upsetting my guest."

Black-suited bodyguards immediately blocked the exit.

I held Luca, turning back in despair. "What are you doing? He could be permanently scarred!"

Santino, while gently patting Finn's back, said casually, "You can go. But first, you apologize to Finn."

"What did you say?"

"Your outburst scared Finn. Apologize. And keep apologizing until he forgives you."

Luca began to tremble violently in my arms, his breathing growing shallow. "Mommy, it hurts so bad. Am I going to die?"

His was the injury, but the pain was all mine.

On one side was my dignity. On the other was my son's pain.

Looking at Santino's cold profile, I finally understood. In this man's heart, Luca and I were worth less than stray dogs.

To appease Riley's son, he would let his own flesh and blood suffer.

"Hurry up. My patience is wearing thin," Santino urged.

Finn peeked out from Santino's arms, waiting for my humiliation.

I closed my eyes, a single tear tracing a path down my cheek.

For Luca, I would walk through hell.

I turned, faced the boy who had burned my son, and said,

"I'm sorry."

Santino watched me coldly. "Is that how you apologize?"

Luca's breathing grew more ragged.

Finally, I bowed my head. "I was wrong. Please, I beg you, let me take him to the hospital."

Santino looked surprised that I would go that far, hesitating for the first time, his jaw tight. "I didn't tell you to..."

I didn't wait for him to finish. The moment the bodyguards were distracted, I bolted.

At the nearest emergency room, doctors treated Luca's burns.

Second-degree burns, deep enough to threaten nerve damage.

After his wounds were treated, Luca finally fell into an exhausted sleep.

Watching my son, wrapped in bandages, I leaned against the cold hallway wall, completely drained.

I dragged myself to the end of the hall to pay the bill. As I passed the smoking area, I overheard two familiar voices.

"Santino, wasn't that a bit much back there?" Riley's voice was probing. "What if Erin gets really angry and tries to run away with Luca? He is your biological son, after all."

The air was silent for a few seconds.

Then came Santino's mocking laugh.

"Run? Where could she run?"

Through the glass, I saw him leaning against the railing. "She cut all ties with her family to marry me. She endured five years in the slums for me. Just now, she was willing to bow to Finn for that kid."

"She and that worthless kid would do anything for me. This is just a little tantrum."

"She'll never leave me."

Two years later, Philadelphia.A simple, warm wedding was being held on a sun-drenched lawn.Luca, dapper in a sharp little suit with a pink rose pinned to his chest, was so much taller. At seven, he already had the handsome beginnings of the man he was growing into."Mommy, Daddy, congratulations!"He ran toward us, a basket of flowers in his hand, a joyful little angel surrounded by guests.I wore a simple white wedding gown, the veil dotted with tiny diamonds that sparkled in the sunlight.Declan, in a tailored suit, looked even more mature and steady than he had two years ago, but the look he gave me was still filled with a tenderness that could bring tears to your eyes."Thank you, my son."Declan took the basket, retrieved the rings from inside, and knelt on one knee. His eyes were so full of devotion that my own began to well up."Erin, thank you for agreeing to marry me, for making me the happiest man in the world.""And thank you for giving me a family.""Papa, I'm giving you

"Erin, don't go," Santino's voice was a hoarse plea, stopping me."If I bleed for you, the way Luca bled, will you feel even a shred of pity?"There was a flash of cold light as he unhesitatingly dragged the dagger across his own wrist. His jaw twitched. The blade bit into his skin, and blood welled up, dripping onto the pristine marble floor."Just tell me. Is there truly nothing left for me in your heart?""So many people used to flock around me, flattering me, telling me they loved me. But I knew they only loved the Don, the power, the money.""Do you know why I believed Riley? Because she staged a so-called 'rescue.' I thought that in this world of fakes, I had finally found one person who was willing to die for Santino the man, not for Santino the Don.""Pathetic, isn't it? Fooled by such a clumsy lie for all those years.""But now I know. It was fake! All of it was fake!"He cut himself again, the wound deep enough to show bone."Only you were real. Those five years, that rundown

The car sped through the city, finally stopping in front of the largest cathedral in Manhattan."Santino! Let go of me!"I was forcibly dragged from the car by two bodyguards, struggling with all my might, but it was useless."Don't fight it, Erin," he murmured against my hair. "You'll like it. This is where we're getting married."The cathedral was empty, save for the white roses that covered the altar.A team of stylists was already waiting. They ignored my protests and forced me into the dressing room."Get away from me! I'm not wearing it!"I grabbed the expensive, diamond-encrusted wedding gown and threw it to the floor. "Santino! This is kidnapping! This is illegal imprisonment!"The curtain was pulled back.Santino stood there in a pure white tuxedo, looking like an angel but acting like a devil. He knelt, picked up the gown I had soiled with my shoe, and gently brushed it off. "Erin, I had this gown custom-made to your measurements. I picked out every single diamond myself.""I

"Don Connor, this..."Watching Santino's manic display, the doctors exchanged fearful glances, their hands hovering over the machine's off-switch, but no one dared to press it.I stood to the side, watching his desperate act, my heart feeling as though it were being squeezed by an invisible hand."Stop! Santino! Stop it!"I lunged forward, but Santino grabbed my wrist. His palm was burning hot, slick with sweat."Don't stop it."He gasped, his voice broken. "Erin, watch me. I owe you this."The numbers on the heart-rate monitor jumped wildly: 160, 180, 200...Santino's body was shaking violently, each stride pushing him further past his physical limits."It's... not... enough..."He stared at me, his eyes filled with a dying, crazed obsession. "Luca was... in more pain... wasn't he?""As long as you're happy..."In a state of extreme oxygen deprivation, a weak smile touched his lips. "You can have my life...""Don't!" I screamed. "Santino, stop! You're going to die!"His weak smile rem

I was back in the familiar Connor estate.Staring at the opulent crystal chandeliers and the fresh flowers flown in from France, I felt nothing but a bone-deep chill. This place was a world away from the warmth of that small, loving house in Pennsylvania.I walked into a guest room without a word and slammed the door. A moment later, Santino was knocking."Erin, come out for a minute."Santino held a black paper bag with the Chanel logo on it, his smile gentle and pleading."I had this gown pressed for you," he said, his voice gentle. "Please, try it on. I've booked the best French restaurant in the city. For our date."I looked at the dress and felt my stomach turn."Isn't this Riley's favorite brand? And this restaurant... isn't this where you used to take her?"Santino's smile froze. He tried to explain, his voice flustered. "Erin, let's not talk about her, okay?""I'm not wearing it." I sat on the sofa in my faded sweatsuit, not moving an inch. "I'll go like this. What, is the Don

The salty wind whipped around me, making me shiver. The Connor family's East Coast shipping routes were the lifeblood of a billion-dollar black-market empire. And Santino was willing to give up half of it just to get me back?I instinctively took a step back, putting distance between myself and Declan.Even though the Falcone family had gone legitimate, no one could refuse a fortune large enough to shake the entire North American underworld. For the good of his family, Declan..."The Connor family's profits?" Declan scoffed. "Santino, you're pathetic."He didn't even glance at the black card, only pulled me closer behind him, his eyes filled with disdain for Santino."My feelings for Erin are genuine. I love her, and I intend to make her my wife. I care for Luca, and I intend to be his father."Declan turned, and in front of Santino, he gently took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine."You're a sad man, Santino. You think everything in this world has a price?""I have no interest
