Chapter 3

TP
However, Simon never did.

Cynthia even sent me a video message on the day of Noah's first birthday, showing them entangled within each other's arms. Simon was possessively gripping the back of her head as he drove himself into her core. The crazed, desperate look on his face completely shattered my heart.

She immediately sent a follow-up text message.

"Simon didn't break up with me after your last outburst. We even tried so many positions that you'd probably never even think of… Oh my, Simon's such a wonderful beast in bed!

"You know what, Layla? You're such a failure of a mate for him."

Anger consumed me whole.

I immediately exposed the video and screenshot of Cynthia's text messages online to the pack's public forum, revealing Simon's infidelity to his mate.

The Elder's Council's support for him wavered, and many members of the pack also held grievances against him.

Simon was soon exhausted by all of this.

So, when he faced a challenger who was coveting the position of Alpha of the pack, Simon was decisively defeated and severely injured from the fight.

Even so, he still held me in his arms, weeping in remorse as he said, "This is all my fault, Layla. I deserve it! I don't have anything anymore. You and Noah are the only ones left!

"Please don't leave me. Please just give me another chance. I promise that I'll change my ways."

The guilt and heartache I felt for him overrode my anger toward him, and so, I succumbed to his pleas once more.

After that, we moved into a tiny hut at the border of the pack's territory.

I would take on every task available in the pack every day after that, including patrolling the territory, escorting important figures, running errands, and everything else.

Meanwhile, Simon was oppressed by the new Alpha and could only do hard labor during the day and deliver supplies to risky, dangerous areas at night.

Life was tough, but at the very least, the rift between us was healing.

He would often squeeze in time despite his exhaustion to prepare a heartfelt dinner for Noah and me. He even taught himself basic first-aid and helped treat my wounds and injuries after I completed my missions.

Every night before bed, he would hold me in his arms and solemnly promise me, saying, 'I promise that I'll give you and Noah a better life, Layla."

I believed him then.

As he worked hard, his efforts didn't go unseen, and his reputation gradually recovered. His past mistakes seemed to be easily forgiven after the pack witnessed his reformation.

Then, devastating news struck again.

Simon had taken Noah with him while out patrolling one day, and Noah was accidentally injured by a silver weapon, making him contract silver rot.

The exorbitant treatment costs instantly crushed us.

The healer had told us that long-term medication was necessary for Noah, along with regular checkups. Each visit to the healer was always more expensive than the last.

I relentlessly took on more and more dangerous missions to earn more money to pay for Noah's treatment. So, over the past few years, I'd completely turned into a money-making machine, totally unaware and oblivious to the intricate lies that Simon had woven for me.

My phone buzzed just then, reminding me that it was time for my shift at the bar.

I squeezed Dad's hand one more time before leaving the healing center.

Then, I changed into my uniform and walked toward my assigned area in the bar.

I'd only just reached the entrance when I vaguely heard Cynthia's voice.

"You're only going to listen to everything I say today, Simon. Then, I promise that I won't cause Layla any more trouble after that."

Simon's voice sounded unusually calm as he replied, "Layla has suffered enough over the past few years. Don't bother her anymore after today's Hunting Festival.

"I've already defeated the current Alpha, and the Elder's Council will be announcing it in a few days. You can return to your pack after that. Next, I'm going to make everything up to Layla.

"When that time comes, I will quickly fulfill my promise to your pack."

I stood outside the door, silently wiping my tears away.

It was impossible for Simon and I to get back together now.

I took a deep breath, forcing back the tears in my eyes as I picked up my tray, plastered a professional smile on my face, and pushed the door open.

"Good evening. The drinks that you ordered are here."

I then placed the bottles of beer and whisky on the table before turning to leave.

Cynthia seemed surprised to see me. It was more of a delighted surprise than a nasty shock.

She immediately came after me and got in my way, stopping me from leaving their private room.

"Since you're already here, Layla, there's no reason for you to leave after just delivering the drinks! Let's have some fun together today, shall we?"

Layla's POVDad woke up one sunny afternoon. The nurse ran out looking for me at once, and I quickly rushed into the room. He was staring blankly at the ceiling with his eyes wide open."Dad…"He turned around. When he saw me, his lips moved slightly as he asked, "Layla… How long have I been asleep?""Two years, Dad," I said, holding his hands in mine. I was unable to stop my tears from falling. His fingers tightened slightly as he looked at my face. "Are you crying?""I'm just too happy, Dad."Something flickered in his eyes, as if it were some insight that only a father could ever possess. "Where's Simon?""We separated a long time ago."Dad didn't press any further. Instead, he held my hand and quietly looked at the sunlight streaming in through the window. After a long time, he finally asked, "Have you been well?""I have, Dad. I'm doing very well. A lot better than before."It was the truth now. When Caelum came in to pick me up, Dad was in the midst of eating with t

Third-Person POVThings began going awry after Simon returned to the pack.At first, Cynthia thought that he was just very occupied with pack affairs as he'd just regained his position as the pack Alpha. She clung to him as usual and even continued badmouthing Layla to him. However, Simon began ignoring her and staying silent whenever she spoke. His gaze always wandered elsewhere. He also began sitting alone by the window at night, staring blankly at the moon. The Elders noticed his change and thought that Simon was now worse off than before, especially after regaining his position as the Alpha.Cynthia began to panic. She approached him and said, "Everyone is saying that you've become like this because of Layla—""Tell me the truth, Cynthia," Simon said, interrupting her as he stared directly into her eyes. "What was the intelligence that you gave me during that ambush years ago?"Cynthia's heart thumped in her chest. "I don't know what you're talking about.""You do know," Si

Noah found me while I was buying some fresh produce at the farmer's market in the Neutral Territory. He stood in the crowd, dressed in a clean jacket, and rushed toward me with red eyes as soon as he caught sight of me. He threw his arms around my waist and cried out, "Mommy!"I crouched down and hugged him back. He was a little skinnier than I remembered, but his complexion looked a lot healthier now than before. He was not as pale as he used to be."Noah? What are you doing here?""Daddy told me to come here," he answered. His voice was muffled as he buried his face in my neck. "Daddy said that Mommy was out alone, and he said that I should come and keep you company."I looked up and saw Simon standing at the entrance to the farmer's market, looking at us through the bustling crowd. He didn't come over to us and just stood there with a complex expression on his face."Is your silver rot better now, Noah?"Noah looked up at me. Then, his eyes darted away in guilt. "Mommy… I'm s

The hallway in the healing center was just how I'd remembered it. There were white walls, the pungent smell of disinfectant everywhere, and the occasional low voices here and there.I gently pushed open the door to Dad's ward. He was still there, lying still in bed. His face was pale, and his breathing was even.I sat down beside the bed and held his hand gently."Dad, I'm here now."The nurse happened to come in to change Dad's dressing at that moment, and she casually placed an envelope on the bedside table for me."Somebody dropped this off yesterday, saying that it was for you."There was a single note inside the envelope with only a single line of words on it."I need to see you, Layla. From Simon."I folded up the note again and put it back inside the envelope before pocketing it. Then, I grabbed Dad's hand again without saying another word. After the nurse left, I heard footsteps in the hallway that kept getting closer. They stopped at the door to the ward."Layla."I

When I opened my eyes again, I realized that I was staring at an unfamiliar ceiling with wooden beams. There was an unfamiliar scent of pine and herbs in the air.My wounds had been tightly bandaged up, but my abdomen still ached dully.I tried sitting up, but as soon as I used the strength in my arm, I immediately felt a tearing sensation in my wounds, which forced me back down."Don't move."A deep voice came from the corner.A werewolf was sitting in a chair by the window, holding an open book in his hands while his gaze was fixed on me.I'd never seen him anywhere before. He was tall and burly with a head of dark hair, calm, quiet eyes, and an inexplicably oppressive presence.I instinctively tried to identify his scent, but to no avail. I could only sense his extraordinary power reverberating in the room."Who are you?""Caelum Vilkas."He closed his book and stood up, walking over to me on the bed. He set a glass of water next to my hand. "You lost too much blood last

I was then forcibly dragged into a knife-throwing game. There was a huge wooden roulette wheel in the center of the room, and the chosen werewolves would be tied to the wheel, serving as the live targets. The wheel would be spun, and when it stopped, the others would throw knives from about three steps away. If the knife landed near the target, it would count as a pass, and if the knife missed, it would mean a penalty for the thrower. There were several other werewolves in the room aside from Simon and Cynthia, and I recognized them all. They were Cynthia's friends. The first round ended, and the pointer landed on me, picking me as the next live target. So, I was forced to stand before the huge spinning wheel, and my arms were tightly secured in place by shackles. Before I could even snap out of it, the first knife came whizzing at me, grazing past my ear and embedding itself in the wooden board, severing a few strands of my hair. Then, the roulette wheel was spun again. I was ma
