By the time we reached the hotel at the base of the mountain, it was evening.

When Gavin checked in, he only booked one family suite.

"Peak season. Nothing else available."

When we opened the door, the suite already smelled like Mia.

Her coat was draped over the foot of the bed.

Her medicine bottles lined Gavin's side of the nightstand.

That was when it hit me.

This room didn't need me.

This family didn't need me.

I walked to the sofa in the living area and started packing.

Gavin followed me in.

He came to my side and pulled a small wooden box from his pocket.

"Come on, don't be upset. I bought this moonstone pendant downstairs. The jeweler said it could help guide the pup's spirit, too."

I stopped what I was doing and looked at the box.

"Take it."

He pressed the box into my hands.

"I picked it out just for you."

Just then, Mia came out of the bedroom.

She had changed into a loose dress, and an identical moonstone pendant hung around her neck.

Only hers was bigger.

The stone was brighter.

Gavin's scent clung to the edges. He had polished it himself.

"Gavin, does this pendant look good with this dress?"

She smiled and twirled in front of him.

Gavin's eyes softened.

"Beautiful. You look beautiful in anything."

He turned to me.

"The shop only had two left. You've always said big pendants get in the way, right? The smaller one suits you better."

I looked at the moonstone in the box.

I thought of the Instagram story Mia had posted from the car.

"Thank you to a certain someone for always saving the best for me."

"No, thank you."

I set the box on the coffee table.

"I'm allergic to moonstone."

Gavin blinked.

"Since when have you been allergic to moonstone? Why didn't I know?"

"Always have been."

My voice was calm.

"You didn't know because you've never bought me jewelry."

Gavin's face darkened.

"Erin, I bought this to make you happy. If you don't like it, just say so. Why do you have to put it like that?"

Before he could finish, Leah came running out of the bedroom.

She held up a Polaroid, beaming with pride.

"Mama Erin, look at the picture I took. It's so pretty!"

I glanced at it.

In the photo, Gavin carried Mia on his back, walking along a cobblestone street in the town below the mountain.

They were both beaming.

Leah leaned close to my ear and whispered.

"Mommy said she came on this trip to finish the pilgrimage she and Daddy never got to finish."

I looked into her innocent eyes.

"Mommy told you that?"

She thought about it.

"Uh-huh. Mommy also said she and Daddy never got a honeymoon when they were mates, so this trip is supposed to make up for it."

Gavin's expression froze for an instant.

He bent down and picked Leah up.

"Leah, don't repeat grown-up conversations. Go play inside."

I looked at him.

Then, without a flicker of emotion, I handed the photo back to him.

"You three were always a family. How nice."

I turned and went back to packing my suitcase.

My indifference seemed to infuriate Gavin.

He stepped forward, his fingertips closing around my wrist.

"Erin, say what you actually mean."

I pulled my hand free.

I looked him in the eye and enunciated every word.

"Gavin, being around you is exhausting."

He paused.

As if holding something back.

In the end, he only gave me a humorless half-smile.

"Fine. Suit yourself."

He turned, carrying Leah, and walked out.

The room fell completely silent.

I stared at the moonstone pendant on the coffee table.

I immediately emailed my signed acceptance letter for the Geneva posting to my assistant.
