Chapter 5

Author: Helen
I stared at the international posting contract on my phone, checking every detail.

Geneva Neutral Zone.

International Pack Council, Geneva Neutral Zone Field Office.

Project Lead for Cross-Border Territory Agreements.

From now on, I was no longer just the Grey Ridge Alpha's mate.

No longer the always-understanding Erin in someone else's household.

My phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

I hesitated for two seconds, then answered.

"Erin, where are you right now?"

Gavin's voice was low and taut.

I could tell he was reining in his emotions.

"Leah said you left with your suitcase. You don't dissolve a mate bond on a whim. Come back so we can talk this through."

"You got the agreement?"

I didn't answer his question.

Silence on the other end for a few seconds.

"Erin, don't threaten me with divorce. You're not impulsive. Come back to the hotel."

"It's not a threat."

My voice was flat.

Even I was surprised by how calm I sounded.

"I meant every word. Sign the papers, or we'll meet in court and before the Elder Council."

A boarding call echoed through the terminal.

I switched off my phone and wheeled my suitcase toward the jet bridge.

Then I heard shouting behind me.

"Erin!"

Gavin was drenched in sweat.

He wasn't wearing a coat, and his shirt was rumpled.

Mia and Leah hurried behind him.

"You're really leaving?"

He grabbed my wrist, his voice low and taut.

"Erin, you don't dissolve a mate bond in the middle of a tantrum. Come back with me. We'll talk this out."

I looked down at his hand gripping my wrist.

"Let go."

"Erin, don't take this too far."

I raised my head and looked him dead in the eye.

"Gavin, don't you owe me an explanation for that bowl of bone broth three months ago?"

His fingers went rigid.

"...Who told you?"

"Does it matter?"

He released my wrist and stepped back.

"It was an accident. She didn't do it on purpose. She didn't know what the broth was for..."

"She didn't know?"

I cut him off.

"She lived in Grey Ridge for six months. She knew I was on bed rest. She knew the healer had made that broth for my pregnancy. And she knew wolfsbane would make a pregnant wolf miscarry."

He fell silent.

Mia spoke from behind him, her voice thick with tears.

"Erin, this is my fault. But I really didn't mean to. That day I just thought the broth was too bland and wanted to add some herbs. I didn't know it was..."

"Mia."

I didn't look at her. My eyes stayed fixed on Gavin.

"You once told me you trained in herbal medicine under the pack healer for three years. Didn't you?"

Her voice cut off.

Gavin's face drained of color.

I pulled up an Instagram post Mia had shared three years earlier and held the phone out to him.

The photo showed her certificate from an herbal-medicine program.

The caption read:

"Three years of study, and I can finally take care of myself."

"See for yourself."

Gavin took the phone, staring at the screen. His hand was shaking.

The boarding announcement sounded again.

Final call.

I took my phone back and turned away.

"Erin!"

"The divorce agreement and the mate-bond dissolution petition are both in your inbox."

I pulled my suitcase forward.

"Sign them and send them to my assistant."

"I won't sign!"

He shouted behind me.

I didn't stop.

The instant I stepped onto the jet bridge, the mate bond crashed into me again and again.

Like a wolf that had finally realized its den was empty.

I didn't look back.

I raised my hand and pressed against the burning spot over my heart.

I stripped his scent out of my wolf, inch by agonizing inch.

Behind me came Leah's crying.

"Mama Erin!"

"Mama Erin, don't go!"

I kept walking.

The boarding bridge door closed behind me.

Every sound vanished behind it.

In autumn, Mrs. Hayes's condition deteriorated. The doctor said three months, at most.I brought Leah to stay at my place for the time being. She'd matured so much more than a year before. No crying, no fussing.Every day she carried her backpack to school on her own and came home to do her homework by herself.Only occasionally would she jolt awake from a nightmare, calling for her mother. One afternoon in late October, my assistant pushed open the door."Erin, Mrs. Hayes passed away."I stood up, grabbed my coat, and headed out.By the time I reached the hospital, her body had already been covered with a white sheet.Leah sat on the bench outside the room. She hugged her knees without making a sound.I walked over and sat beside her.She leaned into me, burying her face in my arm.She didn't cry out loud. But her whole body was shaking.I held her and patted her back gently."Leah, Grandma isn't in pain anymore."She asked, her voice muffled."Mama Erin, is it just going to be me fro

Six months later, the verdict came down.Guilty of contract fraud. Seven years in prison. The day of the sentencing, I saw the news notification in my office. He wore a prison uniform, and most of his hair had gone white.Only thirty-four, but he looked like he was in his fifties. My assistant came in with a stack of documents."Erin, the court has ruled on Leah's guardianship.""Gavin can't serve as her guardian from prison. Mia is wanted internationally for conspiracy and fraudulent asset transfers. The court has named Gavin's mother as Leah's temporary guardian.""But Mrs. Hayes was diagnosed with stomach cancer last week. She's in the hospital receiving chemotherapy.""The court contacted you because you were Leah's primary caregiver for five years. They want to know whether you'd be willing to..."I was willing to look after her.To give her whatever care I could. But I wouldn't tie myself back into that relationship. That evening, I went to the hospital to see Gavin's mother. She

After the Grey Ridge work review, I met up with former colleagues for dinner.Someone brought up Gavin."Did you hear? Prosecutors charged Gavin, and a judge ordered him held pending trial.""What about Mia?""Gone. She took the money her brother had moved and fled the country. Every asset in her name has been liquidated or transferred.""So Gavin lost everything?""Worse. He can't even afford private counsel. His house and car are frozen, and Grey Ridge won't cover his legal bills. I heard he called every friend he has. Nobody would help.""Serves him right. Erin treated him so well, and he just had to put his ex-mate on a pedestal.""Exactly. Look at Erin now. She went from project lead in Geneva to an appointment overseeing the entire Eastern District."On the way back to the hotel after dinner, my assistant handed me an envelope."Erin, someone came to the front desk looking for you today. Couldn't find you, so they left this."I opened the envelope.Inside was a handwritten letter

The divorce proceedings went more smoothly than I'd expected.Gavin hired the best lawyer and tried to stall. But my lawyer presented a comprehensive trail of evidence. The timeline of Mia's residency in Grey Ridge territory.Text messages documenting Gavin's months of neglect. My medical report after losing the pup.The screenshot of Mia's herbal-medicine certificate. And the testimony Leah had unwittingly given. The court granted the divorce. Gavin's refusal to sign had only delayed the inevitable. The Elder Council found that Gavin had gravely breached his duty to protect his mate and approved my unilateral dissolution of the bond.As for assets, I didn't ask for anything. The house was his from before the marriage.Grey Ridge territory belonged to his pack.None of it was something I needed. The day the ruling came down, my assistant called."Erin, Gavin didn't appeal. But he asked his lawyer to pass along a message.""He said... he'll wait for you."And so the days went on.The pa

Geneva was colder than I'd imagined. My first week on the job, I worked until two in the morning almost every night. Not because I was busy.Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw that bowl of broth.I remembered that night. The pain so bad I rolled off the bed, blood soaking through my nightgown.Gavin drove me to the pack healer, gripping my hand the entire way and telling me over and over that I would be okay. And he had already known. He knew Mia had done it.He chose to keep it from me.For three months, every time I blamed myself.Every time I thought I was the one who hadn't protected the baby.Every time I lay in the dark with a hand over my empty belly, crying until my whole body shook. He saw all of it.And didn't say a single word.In the second week, my lawyer sent a message."Ms. Bennett, Gavin Hayes has refused to sign. His attorney filed a formal response contesting the divorce, and Grey Ridge has refused to submit the mate-bond release to the Elder Council.""File t
