Chapter 1

Penulis: Rice Noodles
I yanked the Moon Goddess pendant he'd given me off my neck.

“I told you I want to sever the mate bond. Today.”

Julian just took the pendant from my hand, careless about the whole thing.

“Seraphina, nothing happened last night.”

“We're bound to each other. Your own body would know better than anyone, wouldn't it?”

“Why let some made-up accusation drive a wedge between us.”

But he knew perfectly well that last night had been the full moon.

Without him, the pain would have had me rolling on the floor.

And I hadn't had the strength left to work out whether he'd actually cheated.

“I'm not joking.”

His face darkened for an instant. He leaned in, brought the chain around my neck, and tried to fasten the pendant back on, but no matter how he tried, the clasp wouldn't close.

I pushed him away, yet my hands were already starting to lose their strength.

Was the wolfsbane flaring up again?

Julian threw the pendant to the ground in a rage. The little moon split clean into two halves, just like the bond between us, beyond all mending now.

His voice was full of anger.

“I don't get why you're always losing your temper out of nowhere.”

“Why can't you be gentle and sweet, like Daisy. Would that really be so hard.”

When I first met him, he didn't even have his wolf yet, fleeing for his life from a vampire.

I was a rare prodigy, a werewolf who came into her wolf at fourteen.

My wolf howled and drove the vampire off.

He'd looked at me then with pure worship in his eyes. “Seraphina, this fire in you is exactly what I love.”

Now here he was, telling me I wasn't gentle enough, that I couldn't measure up to Daisy. It never once crossed his mind that Daisy could afford to be gentle only because he was always there to catch her.

Last night, the clouds parted and the moonlight poured over me.

I was shaking with pain, and Julian had just closed his teeth on my neck when Daisy's scream came from outside the door.

“Julian, I knocked the witch's potion over. Save me.”

He let go of me without a second thought.

“Seraphina, I can't let Daisy get struck by the wolfsbane too. She's weak. She'd never survive it.”

But no witch could ever fight their way into my estate. Daisy was perfectly safe, and he knew it.

I reached out, but I couldn't hold on to the man set on leaving, and at that thought the tears spilled over all at once.

Julian faltered, a little flustered, and reached out to wipe my tears away.

“Seraphina, don't be angry. Fine, I won't go on tonight's hunt. I'll stay home with you.”

I looked at him coldly. “I don't need you to.”

“You don't want this, you don't want that. What do you actually want from me? Do you feel satisfied only after making everyone miserable?”

“Julian, this is all my fault.”

Daisy had drifted in at some point I hadn't noticed, and she caught his hand in hers.

“It's my fault for being so clumsy. I set the witch off, and now I've made the two of you fight over me.”

Julian closed his hand around hers, the motion as natural as if he'd done it a thousand times.

And my heart clenched for a moment right along with it.

“Daisy, you're just too kind for your own good. Seraphina's the one with the temper. It isn't your fault.”

Daisy's face flushed. She looked up, ran into my cold stare, and shrank timidly behind him.

“Seraphina, I didn't do it on purpose. You won't hold it against me, will you?”

I stared at their joined hands and let out a cold laugh.

“You didn't do it on purpose?”

“You always use that one line, I didn't mean to, to wedge yourself between me and Julian.”

“On our wedding anniversary, you said you didn't spill red wine all over Julian on purpose, yet the two of you just happened to end up in matching outfits.”

“At the ball, you claimed didn't knock Julian to the floor and kiss him for a solid minute on purpose.”

“And I suppose you're about to tell me the hands you're holding right now aren't on purpose either.”

“Since you love clinging to Julian this much, then I'll hand him over to you.”

Another full moon. Lucian had his teeth at my neck, his weight pressing me down.“Sera, have you really made up your mind?”“I could use my own heart's blood to ease your pain instead.”“I'm afraid you'll regret it.”I was trembling all over with the pain, yet inside I had never been so certain. This past month he had stayed at my side every waking moment, treating me like something precious. The mighty Alpha King himself was even willing to roll up his sleeves and cook for me, and no matter how much tangled business the pack piled on him, he was back at the estate before sundown every single day, without fail. The old Julian had always wanted to break off my claws, to make me learn from Daisy how to be a meek, timid little accessory. But Lucian was nothing like that. He hunted at my side himself, and when I bared my fangs and tore into the kill, he would proudly heap the spoils at my feet.Wrapped in a love that deep, how could I ever regret it?I tipped my head back and, with trembli

Julian went back to his own pack in defeat. The moment he stepped into the estate, a soft, affected voice rang out.“Julian, what's wrong? Why do you look so awful?”Daisy stood outside the door holding a bowl of hot soup, the very picture of fragile sweetness.“I couldn't sleep all night. I was so worried you'd be hurting over Seraphina, so I made this soup just for you…”“It's still warm. Drink it, quickly.”She'd heard that the bond between Julian and Seraphina was already broken, and decided she finally had her chance to be with him.Her eyes lit up, and she moved to throw herself into his arms.Julian threw out an arm and shoved Daisy away without a shred of mercy.“Get away from me!”Daisy screamed and hit the floor. The hot soup in her hands spilled all over her, scalding her until the tears streamed down.“Julian…”A large patch of her forearm had gone red and swollen. She lifted her head and ran straight into the fury in Julian's eyes.“I was only worried about you. Seraphina

“The Alpha King has held her long enough. It's time you handed my wife back to me!”By the time Julian arrived, Lucian was steadying me at the edge of a steep drop.Lucian and I had shifted into wolves, running across the blinding white of the snow.As we leapt up the snowy mountain, the snow on a sheer slope suddenly gave way.My foot met nothing, and I dropped toward the fall below.Lucian caught me around the waist and locked me firmly into his arms. His pleasant, warm scent filled me all at once, and I could hear his heartbeat, clear as anything.Julian stared hard at Lucian's hand clamped around my waist, his eyes so jealous they looked ready to bleed. The pack wolves who had come with him were murmuring too.“Did Seraphina seduce the Alpha King? Why else would he hold her so tightly?”“That's Julian's woman!”“Haven't you heard? They already severed the bond.”“But even so, the Alpha King has never had eyes for a woman in his life. Why would he treasure some she-wolf like this?”

I slept a deep, dreamless sleep. When I woke, Lucian was sitting propped at my bedside with a vampire clan's silver goblet in his hand, exhaustion all over his face.“Sera, you're awake.”It looked as though he'd wiped out an entire vampire clan overnight.“Lucian, you're insane.”“You went and destroyed a high-blood vampire clan's nest single-handed?”I looked at the dried, dark-red blood on his face, and my voice trembled before I could help it.For some reason, I couldn't bear to imagine what he'd walked into last night. If anything had happened to him, I think I would have lost my mind.Lucian tossed the goblet carelessly onto the table and pressed my palm to his cheek.“Sera, this is what happens to anyone who dares hurt you.”His eyes turned savage. “If I had gotten there any later last night…”“I don't dare think about what I would have done.”“The only way to end it for good is to kill every last one of them.”“I will not let you come to the slightest harm.”I braced myself and

“Seraphina, you're home.”“You've gotten so thin. All these years, how much have you had to swallow?”The moment my mother saw me, she came flying across the room and pulled me into her arms. She squeezed my wrist, overcome with heartache and bursting into tears. My father stood behind her, starting to say something and holding it back.I hadn't come home once since the day he'd said those cruel things to me.“Father.” I was the one to speak first. To my surprise, his eyes reddened too.“You're home. That's all that matters. You're home.”The table was covered end to end, not a bit of seafood among it, every single dish one of my favorites.I stared blankly at the spread laid out just for me, my nose stinging, and without any warning the tears dropped onto the back of my hand.At the Vance dinner table, as long as Daisy was there, her favorite seafood was always laid out.Even though Julian knew I had a severe seafood allergy.“Seraphina, Daisy loves it. Be the bigger person.”“She's a

Julian bowed his head too, but his hands were clenched into tight fists. He didn't understand why his heart ached so bitterly at the sight of the Alpha King Lucian Kane holding Seraphina.Especially the raw tenderness brimming over in the Alpha King's eyes drove him half mad with jealousy.Lucian swept out one hand, and the vampire still thrashing on the ground slammed into the far wall.“Damn it. How dare it lay a hand on you.”“I'll make every last one of them pay for this.”His gaze cut across the crowd, cold enough to frighten anyone.“So many high-ranking wolves, and not one of you could protect a single Omega. Useless, every last one of you!”Julian, the pack's Alpha, bowed his head nearly to the ground, his legs trembling beneath him.I lay in Lucian's arms, so weak I felt close to death.“Lucian, don't be angry.”“At least today, they've all seen what you're capable of.”Lucian drew out the Alpha King's one and only vial of elixir. He brought it to my lips, but I pressed them s
