The hunt began. The pack circled a lone vampire, closing in slowly.

The howling drove the vampire into a frenzy. It bared its fangs, searching for a way out.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Daisy behind me, and a flicker of unease ran through me.

Then, all at once, a powerful force shoved me forward.

“Ah…” Daisy's startled cry went up right along with it.

I saw Julian lunge over and shield Daisy beneath him, while I rolled, out of control, straight to the vampire's feet.

A bone-deep cold wound quickly around my limbs, and the vampire's pale, bluish hand clamped hard onto the back of my neck.

Its fingertips broke through my flesh. The pain made me shake, and bright red blood dripped onto the snow.

“Seraphina!” Julian swept Daisy behind him with one broad hand.

The worry in his eyes as he looked at me couldn't have been faked.

But somewhere along the way, when danger came, I was no longer the one he moved to protect.

In the beginning, on hunts he would tuck me carefully behind him and treat every kill he made as mine, all so I could find my footing in a pack of strangers.

“Seraphina, it was hard enough for you to be willing to come here with me.”

“I can't let a single thing touch you.”

“In all this world, you are the person who matters most to me.”

Until Daisy's engagement fell through and she came back to the pack.

Julian skipped a hunt to comfort Daisy all night long and left me alone, exposed to danger, until the wolfsbane took hold of me.

Time and again, one word from Daisy and he could abandon me without so much as a backward glance.

From then on, a huge gap lay between us. We stared at one another from far away and drifted further apart by the day.

Watching him shield Daisy now, my heart went cold to its very core. If that was how it was, then there was nothing here left for me to hold on to.

“Let go of Seraphina!”

Julian tried to rush forward and fight the vampire, but Daisy grabbed his hand.

“Julian! This is a high-blood vampire. I can't just stand here and watch you throw your life away.”

“But Seraphina is still in its hands.”

Daisy looked over at me.

“Seraphina always has fortune on her side. She'll be fine.”

“And if anything should happen to her, I'll take good care of you in her place.”

The look she gave me was full of smugness. So it was her. She was the one who wanted me dead.

But she was wrong. I wasn't going to die today.

The vampire gripped my throat and backed away.

“Don't let it get away!”

Someone shouted, though I couldn't tell who. The vampire's hand tightened, its fingertips pressing in deeper.

My vision began to whiten until I could barely see.

Howls rose and fell all around.

Then, all at once, the grip on my throat vanished. The vampire collapsed to the ground, and I was caught up in someone's arms.

“Sera, I'm sorry I'm late.”

I gave him a weak smile.

“Lucian, you finally came.”

The wolves all dropped low to the ground, not one of them daring to lift its head.

“All hail the Alpha King, Lucian Kane!”
