Chapter 3

Sun Keeper
I bolted out of the house and slumped onto a street bench, tears rolling down my cheeks.

It didn’t take long for pressed footsteps and a familiar scent to follow.

It was Ulric.

His large, warm hand caressed my cheek to brush away my tears.

“Don’t be sad, Isobel.”

In the past, whenever Maeve set me up and my parents blindly tore into me, I would run away and sob all alone.

Back then, Ulric would always be the first to come to me.

He would dry my tears and hold me close in his arms.

Ulric once promised me solemnly.

“Don’t be scared. I will forever be by your side. My undivided attention goes to you.”

Yet, look where we were now.

My gaze locked onto Ulric.

I couldn’t wrap my head around why even he had changed.

“How could you do this to me?”

I demanded an answer, my voice choked with sobs.

“Why must you share the love that was meant for me with another?”

Ulric was taken aback.

He crouched to my eye level, his voice softening as he calmed me.

“Don’t read too much into it. You’re the one I love the most. I’m only looking out for Maeve a little more because she’s your sister.”

As composure overtook me, I chuckled sarcastically.

“Is that really all there to it?”

Guilt-ridden, Ulric shied away from my gaze.

“Maeve has feelings for me. With a heart as whole as hers, I couldn’t bear to let her down or hurt her.

“She claimed the ceremony was merely her way of putting an end to her love for me, so I went along with it.”

His tone reflected certainty.

“Don’t you worry. You are the only mate for me.”

The whole thing was just absurd to me.

“You’re so concerned about hurting her. What about my pain?”

Ulric fell silent.

I rolled up my sleeve.

The deep wounds on my arm, burned down to the bone by silver, lay fully exposed to his eyes.

Ulric gasped sharply, his eyes etched with shock and heartache.

“Who did this to you? Tell me. I’ll avenge you!”

I met his eyes without so much as a blink.

“I was knocked out after drinking a glass of milk brought by my mother yesterday. Meave locked me in the basement, secured with a silver lock.

“I sustained these injuries just trying to break free.”

The expression on Ulric’s face froze.

His face betrayed a mixture of resignation and rising anger.

“Isobel, I know you’re upset about what happened yesterday.

“But that doesn’t give you any reason to paint Maeve in a bad way! She had a rough pup-hood on the street. She’s vulnerable. She would never do such a thing!”

I smirked in rage.

Before I could say anything, his phone rang.

Once the call connected, Ivy’s shrill, panicked voice came through.

“Ulric, come quickly! Maeve is going to jump into the river and kill herself.

“She’s in tears, blaming herself for coming between you and Isobel. She wants to pay with her life to make up for it!”

Color drained from Ulric’s face.

Jolting to his feet, Ulric threw an anxious look my way.

“Isobel, I—”

“Just go.”

I cut him off indifferently.

He paused for one second, caught off guard by my prompt consent.

Ulric tried to justify himself to cover his guilt.

“We’re talking about a life here. I can’t just look away.”

“Do you honestly think she’ll die?”

I pressed him.

“You know how well she used to set me up. Do you think a selfish wolf like her would actually put her life at risk?”

Ulric frowned, his voice expressing his disapproval.

“She’s your sister. Besides, I find her to be sweet and innocent after getting to know her. She’s not as mean as you put her to be.

“I believe you might have gotten the wrong idea about her.”

On the other end of the line, Ivy hysterically urged Ulric.

“What’s the big hold-up? Maeve’s about to jump!

“Forget about that heartless she-wolf! She can go rot for all I care!”

Ulric closed his eyes in agony.

Steeling his heart, he took a step back.

“I need to get going. Once I’m back, we can have a proper talk about this.”

“Save it.”

I kept a straight face, my tone grave.

“There is no us anymore. I won’t mate with you.”

Ulric’s eyes went red.

“Don’t say things you don’t mean because you’re mad. I promise I’ll be back soon enough!”

I offered no response.

Turning on his heel, Ulric dashed in the direction of the river without looking back.

I stared at his receding back before closing my eyes. A tear slipped down.

This would be the last tear I would shed for him.

Lifting my arm, I wiped away the tear stain.

By the time I opened my eyes again, nothing but an unyielding coldness remained.

Another month passed. Ulric, Ivy, and Gerald turned the northern territories upside down, searching for me. They never got the slightest bit of news about me. Regret, concern, and despair came down on them. They started to fear the worst—that I was dead. One day, Ivy sat on the couch, shedding tears. Ulric burst through the door and handed his phone to Ivy and Gerald. It was a press feature straight from a business news outlet in the capital of the Werewolf Kingdom. It reported how I took charge of finances, built a thriving herb trade, doubled the treasury's income in no time, and created plenty of jobs. The entire piece sang praises of my sharp business acumen and bold vision.A photo of me was featured in the report. In the picture, I looked polished, professional, and utterly radiant. They were overjoyed to see the photo, yet a strange, indescribable sadness tugged at their hearts. It hit them that I was no longer the she-wolf I used to be. With them out of

Confronted with Ulric’s stony eyes, Maeve panicked. Nevertheless, she was quick to pull herself together and put on a delighted grin. “You’re back, Ulric.” She approached him eagerly and reached out to hold Ulric’s arm. Ulric stepped aside from her grasp. “Drop the act.” His expression was callous. “I’ve looked into everything.” Maeve’s smile froze on her face. Still, she played dumb. “W-What did you look into? Is there some sort of mistake? “Did those senior members of the pack talk trash about me to you?” She shrugged in feigned nonchalance. “Ulric, you’re the Alpha. You should know that those dumb subordinates can’t relate to their leaders’ grand vision.” Ivy and Gerald picked up on something. Furrowing his brows, Gerald turned to Ulric. “What did you find out?” Ulric passed a testimony to Gerald before meeting Maeve’s gaze again. “On the day of the mating ceremony, Isobel passed out after drinking the spiked milk. “You had her dragged into the

Meanwhile, I crossed thousands of miles and settled down in the capital of the Werewolf Kingdom. The Alpha King met with me personally. His gaze held undisguised respect for me. “I sent you an offer long ago, hoping you would come and take over the entire kingdom's financial affairs, but you refused each time for the sake of your family and mate-to-be.”His tone took a softer turn. “I’ve caught wind of what happened back there. “Just forget all the unpleasant things. No one will ever betray or hurt you here.” I stared into his earnest eyes before nodding solemnly, “Thank you. I’ll prove worthy of your trust.” Not wasting a single day, I dove straight into work. I set about expanding the trade of medicinal herbs.Every day, I was kept busy surveying the terrain, identifying the herbs, and negotiating with merchants from all over. Swamped in endless tasks, I worked around the clock with no time to spare a thought for Ulric or my parents. They belonged to a world

Ulric took off. Maeve slumped against the floor, her shoulders shaking from sobbing. She turned to look at Ivy and Gerald on the couch, her eyes speaking of helpless pleas. Ivy pursed her lips with a mix of emotions. “Maeve, it was… wrong of you to speak of Isobel that way earlier.” Still, Maeve’s tear-streaked face was enough to melt Ivy’s heart.Ivy sighed and went over to pick Maeve up from the ground. Maeve buried herself in Ivy’s arms, whimpering sadly. “I’m sorry, Mom. I won’t do it again.“I don’t know what has gotten into me to say something so horrible… When Isobel returns, I’ll apologize to her and ask for her forgiveness.” The tension along Ivy’s and Gerald’s facial lines eased after Maeve uttered those soft, earnest words. Observing her docile behavior, they nodded and convinced themselves to put their doubts to rest. Maeve had always been sweet and sensible. Surely, her outburst occurred in the heat of the moment. Meanwhile, Ulric wandered aimlessly

“Seriously, Isobel is old enough to know better than to pull childish stunts to upset you.” Maeve pursed her lips dismissively. She approached and held Ivy’s arm to offer comfort. “Don’t get worked up, Mom. Give her a few more days. Once things get rough out there, she’ll know how good she has it here. “When the time comes, she’ll be back with her tail between her legs.” However, no one echoed Maeve’s sentiment. The air was eerily still. Ivy stared into blank space on the couch, her eyes vacant. She was haunted by my desperate shrieks, asking why they didn’t care about me, and the shock in my eyes when she smacked the contract right in my face. Her chest tightened as she kicked herself for the harsh things she had said to me. Gerald spaced out in the direction of the front entrance. He recalled whipping me with the thorny branch the moment I stepped through the door. The horrific image of my skin tearing open as the whip landed remained crystal clear in his mind

  • My Mate and Family’s Choice   Chapter 5

Nobody thought about my absence on the day I left. On the contrary, Ivy and Gerald happily brought Maeve along to officially move into the home Ulric and I had shared. Acting like the she-wolf of the house, Maeve filled the living space with her favorite trinkets, erasing traces of my presence bit by bit. During dinner, Ivy took a sip of soup and let out a comfortable sigh. “Even the house feels so much lighter without Isobel around. Without anyone pulling a face and picking a fight all the time, we can be one big, happy family.” Gerald chimed in with a scoff. “Had I known this earlier, I would’ve kicked the ungrateful brat out a long time ago.” Ulric sat at the table, not saying a word. Taking in the blissful picture before him, he must admit that he enjoyed some peace and quiet for a change. Maeve kept her head down, hiding the glee in her eyes. By the time she looked up, she was back to her meek and hurt self. “Mom, Dad, don’t say that about Isobel. She doesn’t
