Special Chapter (1)

Dr. Johnson died a few months ago. Just moments before succumbing to age and the stress he’s been under, Isabella remembered seeing a small smile on his lips as his slightly milky eyes were fixated on the empty space by the foot of his bed. She heard him mumble a woman’s name before closing his lids and letting out one last exhale.

She should’ve been sad, except she wasn’t. Staring at his face that, ever since their close escape from Amelia Crawford’s men roughly a year ago, had been contorted with pain and anguish but was now relaxed and at peace, she felt like it would’ve been unfair to Dr. Johnson if she had grieved over his death.

The memories ran through her brain as she lit the candle on the tiny altar they made for him at one corner of their home. She had harvested some fresh flowers earlier that morning to change out the wilted ones in the vase by the candle. After mumbling a brief prayer for the peace of his soul, she carried on with her chores.
