Chapter 2

Author: JOJO
Wrapped in a blanket, I sat in a wicker chair on the terrace, running my fingers again and again over the faint mark the wedding ring had left on my left ring finger.

At two in the morning, I heard the lock turn.

Lucius’s footsteps drifted up from the stairwell, slow and slightly unsteady from the alcohol.

He walked over and wrapped his arms around me from behind, blanket and all, resting his chin in the curve between my neck and shoulder.

A cloying floral perfume drifted through the alcohol on his breath, clinging to me like overly sweet gum.

My stomach immediately turned.

It was Liz’s scent.

“Still angry?”

His voice was low and husky.

“I get it. You’ve been upset all night. You even left without having any cake.”

His arms tightened around me, locking me firmly against his chest.

I instinctively tried to pull away, but I couldn’t break free.

“Merope, the angrier you get, the more I know how much you care about me.”

His lips brushed my ear, his voice carrying the patronizing assurance of someone granting me a favor.

“Don’t worry. You’ll always be the one I love most.”

Then he brought his left hand around in front of me and opened his palm.

Our wedding ring lay quietly there, gleaming with a cold white light beneath the moon.

“Look.”

I could almost picture the smug smile on his face behind me.

“Stop being angry. Here, let me put it back on you.”

The moment the cool metal touched my fingertip, I jerked my hand away and knocked it aside.

The ring flew through the air, struck the railing once, and disappeared into the darkness below.

Lucius froze with his hand suspended in midair.

A second later, he released me.

I stood up and turned to face him, only to find that his expression had gone frighteningly cold.

“Merope.”

“That was our wedding ring. How could you...”

“I don’t want something that another woman has worn. It feels dirty.”

I cut him off, forcing a bitter curve onto my lips.

For a moment, he had nothing to say.

Then he frowned and let out a helpless sigh.

“Do you really have to make such a big deal out of this? It was only a penalty in a party game, and now you’re actually jealous of a girl like Liz.”

“Haven’t you noticed? Liz looks almost exactly like you used to—bold, radiant, afraid of nothing. That’s the only reason I paid a little more attention to her. But you…”

His gaze swept over me from head to toe, irritation creeping into his expression.

“Look at what you’ve become. You’ve turned into a bitter, resentful wife who does nothing but make things difficult for me.”

I stared at him without saying a word.

Under the moonlight, his face was just as handsome as it had been for the past three years, yet every word that came from his mouth cut into my heart like a knife.

Just then, his phone rang.

The moment he looked at the screen, the impatience between his brows disappeared.

He turned slightly away from me to answer and lowered his voice. With his back to me, even his shoulders seemed to relax.

After ending the call, he straightened the collar of his coat and looked down at me.

“I have some Family business to take care of. Stay home and think about what you did.”

The entire estate fell silent after he left.

My legs suddenly gave out, and I collapsed back into the wicker chair as the last of the strength holding me together drained away.

My phone vibrated beneath the blanket.

It was a friend request.

After accepting it, I opened the woman’s profile—and froze at her latest post.

The photo showed an enormous pink diamond ring, intricately cut and glowing with a soft, luxurious brilliance.

The caption read, “My love said anything too modest would never be worthy of me.”

The hand in the photo had a small red mole on the back.

It was Liz.

So Lucius hadn’t come home in the middle of the night to return our wedding ring because he had suddenly developed a conscience.

He had simply decided that the old one was no longer good enough for his new sweetheart.

Before I could even lower my phone, another post appeared.

In the picture, a man’s hand was gently rubbing a slender ankle, and on his ring finger was the matching band from our wedding set.

The caption read, “I told him I twisted my ankle, and he immediately left that boring woman behind to come take care of me.”

I smiled faintly and sent Liz a message.

“How about we make a deal?”

Lucius collapsed in the pouring rain and was eventually carried back by his men.His fever raged for three days and nights, at one point becoming so severe that he went into convulsions. His private physician treated him around the clock with medication and IV fluids before finally managing to pull him through. The moment Lucius opened his eyes, the first thing he did was order the butler to summon every one of his trusted men to the study.“Gather everyone we have. We’re attacking the Moretti estate.”He leaned against the headboard, his face as pale as paper while manic obsession burned in his eyes.“I’ll destroy everything she relies on until she has no choice but to come back to me.”His lieutenants exchanged uneasy looks before one of them finally forced himself to step forward.“Don, the Morettis are the most powerful Mafia family. Their influence runs too deep, and we… we’re no match for them.”“I don’t care!”Lucius threw back the covers, staggered to his feet, and seized the m

Gunshots echoed across the training grounds of the Moretti estate.Wearing noise-canceling earmuffs, I raised my pistol and pulled the trigger, sending every bullet straight through the center of the target.Three years spent living like a caged bird had done nothing to dull my marksmanship, and I was still the finest heir the Moretti Family had ever trained.Meanwhile, at the Camorra estate, Lucius had locked himself inside his study, where empty liquor bottles littered the floor and the heavy stench of alcohol filled the room. One of his men stood nervously outside the door to make his report.“Don, we found something. The last location Donna shared before she left, as well as the helicopter that picked her up, both belonged to the Moretti Family. They were the ones who took her away.”“We didn’t dare investigate any further because we were afraid of provoking the Morettis. They’re simply too powerful for us to risk making an enemy of them.”“The Moretti Family?”A manic gleam of joy

The roar of the helicopter gradually faded as it descended onto the broad lawn of the Moretti estate. The moment the cabin door opened, I caught the long-forgotten scent of cedar mingled with cool, damp air.It smelled like home. Not far away stood a middle-aged couple supporting each other as they waited. They were my parents, the Don and Donna of the Moretti Family. After three years apart, silver had crept into my father’s temples, while my mother, who had always carried herself with perfect posture, now seemed slightly stooped. The moment I stepped out of the helicopter, my mother rushed toward me without hesitation and pulled me tightly into her arms.“My Merope… my daughter…”She held me so fiercely that her tears soaked through the fabric at my shoulder, and my own tears finally spilled over.I wrapped my arms around her and gently patted her back as my voice broke.“Mother, I’m home. I’m all right now.”My father stepped forward and gathered both of us into his arms. His callou

It wasn’t long before Lucius and Liz were pulled from the river by his men.Liz’s wet hair clung to her face as she pressed a hand to her chest and coughed weakly.“Lucius…”She called his name in a hoarse voice, bracing herself on one arm as she tried to move closer to him, but Lucius didn’t seem to hear her at all.He lifted his head, swept his gaze over the empty surroundings, and stared blankly in the direction where the helicopter had disappeared. Then he suddenly got to his feet, seized one of his men by the collar, and began trembling all over.“Where is she?”The man was so frightened by the look on Lucius’s face that he couldn’t speak.“Where is Merope? Who took her away just now? Why didn’t any of you stop her?”His voice cracked as he shouted. The man shook his head, trembling.“Don, I-I didn’t see clearly. It all happened too fast. By the time we realized what was happening, Donna had already left in the helicopter.”Lucius released him.He staggered back several steps, str

The moment the door closed, the gentle expression vanished from Liz’s face. She walked over to my vanity, pulled several sheets of paper from her handbag, and slapped them onto the table.“He signed them.”She lifted her chin smugly.I picked up the papers and turned to the signature page. It was unmistakably Lucius’s handwriting.“I told him I wanted to buy a few commercial properties, then slipped the divorce papers in with the contracts. He didn’t even bother reading them before signing everything.”Liz folded her arms across her chest, unable to hide the pride in her voice.Tilting her head, she looked at me and asked, “You’ve never had him indulge you like that, have you?”I let out a quiet scoff.Three years ago, as the sole heiress of the Moretti Family, the most powerful Mafia family, I had gone out into the world under an assumed identity to gain experience on my own.I first met Lucius while I was working as a waitress in a café, when he accidentally spilled coffee on my clot

Liz didn’t reply until the next morning.“What do you mean?”“Help me trick Lucius into signing the divorce papers. Once he does, the position of Donna will be yours.”There was a long silence before another message finally came through. Her reply was dripping with smug contempt.“Merope, have you finally realized that you’re past your prime? That you’re no longer good enough for Lucius?”“I heard he went to great lengths to win you over back then, but I think that was only because he hadn’t met me first. Now that I’m here, you should have stepped aside a long time ago.”I wasn’t angry. I only found it ridiculous. She thought she had won, but a man whose attention wandered so easily would never be short of another woman to replace the last.“Beg me.”“If you ask nicely enough, maybe I’ll help you.”I had no intention of indulging her.“You’re the one in a hurry, not me. If you don’t want to do it, I don’t mind staying in the position you’ve been dreaming of.”She fell silent for a mome
