Chapter 2

Penulis: Shelley
I ran with Emma in my arms until I could flag down a car, talking to her the whole way to keep her awake.

By the time we got to the hospital, my legs had given out. Someone had to help me through the doors. I started shouting the second we were inside. Someone took Emma from me and ran. I ran after them, and got stopped at the ER door.

The red light was on.

Mom had followed me. She stood next to me, talking nonstop. About how Emma was sickly. About how if I'd listened to her years ago and tried for a son instead, everything would be different.

I knew the method she meant. When Serena and I were both trying to conceive at the same time, Mom had laid out chicken soup and imported fruit for Serena. What she gave me was the rotting fruit she'd left in the back of her fridge for weeks, told me it was the same folk remedy, good for conceiving a boy.

Just thinking about the smell, my throat still goes tight.

"Enough."

I grabbed her shoulders, hard. "You handed Tyler Emma's medicine. You watched him stomp on it. And now you're standing here telling me Emma is fragile. I don't care if you love Serena. Just stop hurting my kid."

Tears were running down my face. I didn't notice.

Mom hesitated, then said, well, she'd already given the things away, she couldn't ask for them back, and besides we were at the hospital now, weren't we, nothing serious, why was I making a scene over nothing.

The ER doors swung open. The doctor's face was grim. He said Emma was in critical condition. She needed surgery immediately. Family needed to sign and pay.

"Okay, okay." I was grateful, in that moment, that I had savings set aside. I went to pay.

I pulled out my cracked phone with shaking hands.

Balance: zero.

I stared at the number for a few seconds. It didn't register. I'd been putting money in that account for two years. The day Emma was diagnosed, I opened it. Every payday, I moved money in first. Last year my coworkers planned a trip to Hawaii; I skipped it and the airfare went in there. I'd never touched that account. It was for Emma. For an emergency.

I looked up at my mother.

She said Serena had mentioned this morning that her car insurance was due. She'd felt bad. She'd transferred it from my account. Then she paused. "Mia, what's wrong with that account? Even I can't authorize a transfer from it. That's not right, sweetheart. Family shouldn't have walls like that."

I didn't say anything.

She'd already given away one Tesla. Now she'd cleaned out the emergency fund.

I stood there. I didn't move.

That was when Serena walked in. Smiling. "Sorry, drove slow, didn't want to scratch the new car. You good?"

Emma had just been wheeled out of the ER.

That car had been bought with the surgery fund I'd been building for two years.

Emma had almost died today, because her medicine wasn't there.

Her medicine wasn't there because my mother handed it to Tyler.

My mother thought that was fine, because Tyler said he was curious.

And here was Serena, in my car, asking me if I was okay.

"Family, please sign and pay. We don't have time to wait."

I called someone and asked to borrow money. I said the number. My voice was shaking. They said yes. I paid the deposit, signed the papers. My hands still weren't steady.

I looked up and saw my mother holding Serena's hand, fussing over her.

I took two steps forward, lowered my voice. "Give back the money you took from my mother."

Mom got there first. "Mia, Emma just got out of surgery. Why aren't you with her? What are you doing?"

Serena's eyes welled up. In front of Mom, she sobbed about how she'd never really fit into this family, how she still made the effort to come see Carol anyway. I slapped her. The whole hall went quiet. A security guard grabbed me, but I was still screaming at her to give the money back.

My mother stood there for a moment before she walked over. She touched Serena's red cheek. She looked at me with that disappointed expression and said the money was hers to give. Said Serena had done so much for her, she'd earned it. Said God would remember Serena's kindness.

Dad died young. The whole neighborhood had been waiting to see how my mother treated Serena. So she used my things to shut them up. To herself, she was a merciful servant in God's eyes. But for the smallest scraps of kindness from Serena, she would sacrifice me again. And again. And again.

Everything in my ears went to a low ringing. My mother's mouth was opening and closing in slow motion. Serena's face had that smug look. She'd won.

Then Serena reached into her bag and pulled out the appointment slip. The one from the apartment. She'd been holding onto it the whole time. "Mia, you left this at home. The specialist appointment, give it to me, won't you?"

Blood was hitting my face, drop by drop. My mother had one arm shielding me and Emma, and her other hand was wrapped around the knife, refusing to let Serena get an inch. Serena's eyes were bloodshot, frantic to drag someone down with her, pressing down on the blade. The cut got wider. The dark red on the floor was spreading.Security took Serena down. My mother let go. The wound was on her arm, not fatal. The police came. Serena was pinned to the ground, still staring wildly at Emma. "I'll drag all of you down with me."I walked up to her with shaking hands and slapped her. The sound rang through the whole hall. She froze. Looked at me. Tyler was crying for her in the corner. Serena's eyes locked onto her son. Her lips trembled. She tried to twist free and was held down. "No, no, I have a son to raise, I can't go in."The livestream crashed to the floor when she did. But the screen recordings were already everywhere. I handed everything the bystanders had filmed over to the police, al

Serena's eyes flashed with hatred. She shoved me back, grabbed Emma with one hand, and pulled out a small knife with the other. The whole room screamed.I lunged. Serena's voice cut me off, sharp: "Don't come any closer or she dies." Her grip on Emma's throat tightened. The blade slid across Emma's cheek and a thin line of red welled up. Emma was shaking head to toe.My throat seized. I had to breathe a few times before I could speak. "Serena. You'll go to prison for this. Don't you care about Tyler?"Her voice came out hoarse, desperate. "It's all because of you. I've got nothing left now. If I'm going down, I'm taking someone with me." Her eyes had that strange light in them, fixed on Emma like she was the only solid thing in the room."Serena, what are you doing? You said you were just here to get back what was yours." My mother's voice came from behind me, panicked."You're no better. Putting on the loving mother act this whole time, you never treated me like family. If it wasn't f

The title to the Tesla. Transaction records on the emergency fund. Every transfer made without my consent. I was going to get all of it back.Serena dug in. Said Carol gave her all of it. The lawyer said, evenly, "The Tesla is registered to Mia. Carol had no authority to transfer it. Serena's use of a spare key to drive the vehicle constitutes theft. The savings account: Carol initiated transfers without Mia's authorization. Also unlawful."My mother's and Serena's faces cracked at the same time. Serena's voice went up an octave. Don't listen to her, Mia is jealous, Carol loves her too much, this is a frame job. My mother's tears slid down her face. She said I couldn't lie like this. She'd raised me better than this. God would punish a daughter who didn't honor her mother.I exhaled. Then, completely unexpectedly, I crouched down and beckoned toward the doorway. Tyler darted out from behind the door and grabbed Serena's leg."You stomped on Emma's medicine that day. You were proud of i

After the livestream from the hospital went around, the whole neighborhood was talking. Every time Serena set foot in the complex, she could hear it behind her."Oh, Serena, coming back to visit her stepmom every day. We all thought she was so devoted. Turns out she was just here for the goods.""And she let her son crush a sick kid's medicine? My God, that whole family."Serena hated being shamed in public. She'd duck her head and walk faster. Her in-laws saw the videos. They packed up Tyler's and her things and threw them out the door. "How did my son end up married to a piece of work like you? You bled that side dry, now you're coming for ours? When my son's back from his trip, you're getting a divorce." They kicked her on her way out."Mommy, why won't anyone play with me? They said I'm a murderer." Tyler was sobbing, snot everywhere, gripping Serena's coat and pointing at the kids who'd been laughing at him.Behind her, the neighbors stood watching, smirking.I had my Tesla towed

The doctor was a little taken aback. "Cancel it? These appointments are incredibly hard to get."I nodded. Said it again. The appointment had been for my mother. It was made for her condition specifically. If she didn't want it, there was no reason for me to rush it to anyone else.My mother grabbed my arm. Her voice was unsteady. "Mia, I was wrong, I really didn't know."I looked down at her hand clinging to me. "Mom. The Tesla was mine. The emergency fund was mine. The appointment slip, I spent three months getting it. Emma's medicine, I had alerts for it. Every time you said your conscience couldn't bear it, the price came out of me."I pried her fingers off, one by one, finished the cancellation, and walked back to Emma's room. Behind me, she was murmuring my name. I heard her. I didn't stop. She showed up again the next day with a peeled mandarin, smiling, said it was for Emma. Bright orange, glistening. Emma's face stiffened.I took the mandarin out of her hand before she could p

My mother froze. Then she stepped up, picked up the file with shaking hands. Flipped to the name field. Stared at it. Didn't move. Everyone around her had registered what was happening before she did. After a long second, her lips trembled. "Mia, this isn't my appointment. I'm not sick."Serena's smile died. Her voice came out dry. "Mia, there's no need to put a curse on Carol. If you didn't want to give it to me, fine, you didn't have to make something up."I turned, calm. I looked at my mother."You told me your heart had been bothering you. I took you in for that check-up. The results said you have a heart condition and need surgery as soon as possible. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry. I found this specialist myself. It took almost three months. This is him. He retires at the end of the year. Once that window closes, there's no getting him. Emma's condition is different from yours. She has other options.""But, Mom, you just said you wanted to give this appointm

I turned to look at Serena. She was still standing in the same spot, the slip clutched in her hand, watching me like she was waiting.I walked up to her and stopped."What gives you the right to take my appointment?"Serena sighed. "My heart isn't well either, and I'm older. Treatment's harder at my
