My daughter, Amy Straker, had just turned five. To teach her about finances, I bought her a piggy bank. I told her, “You can put all the money you get on Christmas in here. We won’t touch any of it.” Amy smiled and nodded. Then, she put the money into the piggy bank one bill at a time. When I came home from work another day, Amy cried and threw a fit. She whined, “Daddy, you lied! You said you wouldn’t take my money, but my piggy bank is totally empty!” My wife, Portia Arden, and I looked at each other in dismay. We stared at our crying daughter and then at the empty piggy bank. Did someone break into our house?

Chapter 1

Portia and I rushed into the bedroom to check our valuables.

The valuable jewelry is still in the cabinet, and the laptop was still on the desk.

The doors and windows were intact. There had been no signs of forced entry.

Only Amy’s little pink piggy bank had been smashed open.

The two hundred-plus dollars inside had vanished.

Portia frowned. Her expression was grim.

I took a deep breath. Then, I checked the living room surveillance feed on my phone.

We always kept cameras at home to keep an eye on Amy.

I wanted to see which thief had stooped so low as to steal a child’s money.

Once the footage loaded, I hit replay.

At 3 p.m., an intruder entered our home. However, it was not a thief.

It was my mother-in-law, Heather Arden. She had entered with our spare key.

Behind her was my eight-year-old nephew, Reuben Arden.

Chills ran down my spine as I watched Heather walk into the living room like she owned the place.

Reuben spotted the piggy bank on the coffee table. He started yelling and pointing at it.

Without hesitation, Heather grabbed the ashtray off the table. She slammed it down hard.

The piggy bank shattered instantly.

Reuben cheered and lunged forward to grab a handful of the bills inside.

Heather was smiling from ear to ear. She helped him stuff the bills into his pockets.

Then, she pointed at Amy’s room and said sharply, “What does that little brat even need to save money for?! She’s nothing but a waste of space!

“All the money in this house belongs to my precious Reuben. Who does she think she is?”

Reuben filled his pockets with money. He bounced triumphantly on the couch. He even deliberately spat on the floor.

My hands trembled with rage as I watched the surveillance footage.

It had been our first time teaching Amy how to manage money. Heather had ruined it just like that.

Portia’s face flushed red with anger too when she saw it.

She pulled out her phone and dialed Heather’s number with trembling fingers.

The phone rang for a long time before it connected.

On the other end came the noisy background sound of a shopping mall, along with Reuben’s excited shrieks.

Portia asked through gritted teeth, “Mom, did you bring Reuben over to my house? Where’s the money from Amy’s piggy bank?”

Heather did not show any remorse. She said impatiently, “Yeah, I took it. So what?

“Reuben wanted a table but was still short a few dollars. So, I gave him the money so he could buy it.

“You’re his aunt. Isn’t it only natural to help out your nephew with a little money?”

Portia was so furious that her voice cracked. “That was Amy’s money! She saved that up for a whole year! Did you even ask us? That’s theft!”

Heather sneered, “Theft? I’m your mother! Taking money from my own daughter’s family is not theft!

“Besides, what does that little brat, Amy, even need that much money for?”

Unable to stand it any longer, I snatched the phone from Portia and yelled into the receiver, “Give the money back right now!

“We were teaching Amy to be responsible with money. You basically taught Reuben how to steal!”
