Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
“Seriously? A corpse whisperer? That sounds ridiculous.”

“Who knows. Maybe she just made it up.”

My colleagues eyed Yvette suspiciously, whispering among themselves.

Just then, my boyfriend, Gene Lyons, took the autopsy report from my hands. After flipping through it, he nodded approvingly at her.

“Yvette’s right. What she said matches everything Wynn wrote!”

Immediately, the surrounding crowd buzzed with reactions. Some gasped while others murmured in admiration.

The same people who doubted Yvette moments ago all turned strange looks toward me.

Someone muttered under their breath,

“Dr. Jaffe, you are always so slow. Honestly, it looks like Yvette’s better than you.”

“Exactly. She sums it up in a few sentences, while you craft entire essays. It gives me a headache just reading them!”

Their mocking words sent a cold shiver through me.

I forced myself to stay calm. This new life had only just begun. I still had a chance to change things.

I was certain of one thing. There was no way Yvette knew the autopsy conclusions in advance because of some corpse whisperer ability.

She had to be getting that information some other way. Someone must have leaked the results to her.

The next day, I insisted on examining the body alone and barred anyone from entering before the autopsy.

Yvette stood at the doorway, looking wronged.

“Wynn, I don’t understand. What did I do to make you treat me this way?”

My colleagues gave me disapproving looks when they saw this.

I ignored them. After thinking it through last night, I suspected someone had been sneaking a look at my autopsy reports and feeding the information to Yvette. That was how she was able to get ahead and say the same things.

Therefore, I would conduct the autopsy alone today. I wanted to see what tricks she would try this time!

Once the autopsy room door shut, I finally felt able to work in peace.

An hour later, I walked out with the freshly written report and presented it.

However, as soon as everyone saw it, their expressions twisted strangely.

A wave of unease rose in my chest.

Right then, Yvette spoke,

“Dr. Jaffe, I already went over all of this earlier. Coming over now seems unnecessary, don’t you think?”

I stared at the group in shock. Even a few colleagues I was close to nodded in agreement.

I froze on the spot, completely dumbstruck.

I had done the entire autopsy alone. No one else touched the report.

So how on earth did she still know everything beforehand?

I replayed every detail of every autopsy, searching for the slightest clue.

Then suddenly, there was a flash of insight. I remembered something I had completely overlooked.

Before every autopsy, Yvette always went to the morgue early and stayed for a long time.

My heart skipped. Perhaps that was where I could start.

That night, I swapped the body scheduled for the next day’s autopsy with a different one and hid a small camera in the morgue.

Sure enough, not long after work hours, Yvette appeared on the footage.

She carefully examined the body, then restored everything to its original state before leaving.

A thrill ran through me as I realized my plan had succeeded.

The next morning, I set up for the autopsy. After what happened yesterday, I decided to perform it in front of everyone.

That way, I could deliver the conclusions immediately.

Yvette noticed and smiled.

“No solo autopsy today, Dr. Jaffe?

“I get it. You are afraid I will steal your thunder again, but the corpse‑whisperer ability is something with which I was born. Being jealous will not change that.”

I ignored her. All I wanted was to expose her lies.

Once the team gathered, I began the autopsy and announced my findings.

However, no matter what I said, she always managed to say it first every single time.

A chill shot down my spine. She examined a different body yesterday. There was no way she should know any of this.

So how was she still getting everything right?!

I stared at her, searching her confident expression for even the slightest crack. She only gave me a smile.

My mind spiraled into chaos. The more I tried to make sense of it, the more anxious I became. Finally, I had no choice but to stop.

Gene frowned at me.

“Wynn, what is wrong with you? Your efficiency is terrible. You can’t even keep up with Yvette!”

My heart sank. I tried to explain,

“I…”

Still, he cut me off immediately. “Enough. With your condition right now, you should take a break. Yvette’s abilities speak for themselves. She’ll take over the rest!”

My colleagues dispersed one by one, leaving me standing alone.

No matter how hard I tried to think it through, I still could not understand how Yvette did it.

No matter how many times I went over it, I came up empty.

The crowd erupted in confusion, trying to figure out what I meant.[What is she saying? Does this mean all of Yvette’s conclusions came from hearing Dr. Jaffe’s thoughts?][No wonder! She kept claiming she could speak to the dead, but the moment Dr. Jaffe got transferred out, she never did another autopsy!]I took a deep breath. I faced the camera and everyone, then I began speaking slowly and clearly.“I have always felt something was off about Yvette’s so‑called ability. She could always blurt out conclusions before I did, and they were exactly what I was thinking.“Until one day, I discovered she had placed a charm on me. That is why she could hear my thoughts.”Yvette’s face instantly drained of color. She tried to argue,“You are lying! I never did that!”I let out a cold laugh. Then I pulled a small vial of charm water from my pocket and sprinkled it on both our hands. The moment it touched our skin, a white mark appeared on my arm, while a black spell mark burned onto h

Yvette stared blankly, totally confused about what was happening. She nervously glanced at the comments flooding in beneath the livestream. Her voice trembled.“Everything I said is true, please believe me! I was born with the ability to speak to the dead. I can sense what happened to them right before they died!”However, the viewers were not buying it.[Hold on, did I hear that right? She is calling this an accident?][I mean, is she trying to help the killer get away with it? Who makes up something that ridiculous?][Corpse whisperer? Give me a break.][Since when did becoming a forensic doctor require zero qualifications? Just say whatever and you are hired?]Yvette’s eyes widened as she froze in place.Soon, it was like something finally clicked. She snapped her head toward me and glared at me.“Wynn, did you set me up?”I looked completely innocent.“What are you talking about? I didn’t even say anything. How exactly did I set you up?”While she was losing her mind,

On my first day back at the forensics department, Yvette seemed unusually happy. She wore a radiant smile and went out of her way to fuss over me.“Wynn, you are finally back! We have all missed you so much.“Don’t worry about what happened before. It was all a misunderstanding. In my eyes, you’re still the best forensic pathologist in the city!”I ignored her and asked only about the case. Yvette quickly responded,“This time, the victim is a young celebrity. An idol with lots of fans. The agency is taking it very seriously and has been pressuring us to solve it quickly.”I looked at her ingratiating act and could not help but secretly let out a cold laugh. She wanted to keep her fame as the city’s celebrated corpse whisperer. Tricking me to come back was clearly part of her plan.I nodded.“Got it. It’s late now. We will start the autopsy first thing tomorrow morning.”When I got home that evening, my father leaned close with a mysterious look, whispered a few words, and ha

Things went smoothly in my administrative position for quite a while.I clocked in and out on time every day. There were no more all-nighters, no more complex cases, and no more endless stress.Freed from the heavy workload, my complexion even started to brighten. When my mother noticed I had so much free time, she introduced me to a string of handsome, wealthy young men, claiming that I should meet some good ones so I would not have to suffer like I had before.I gradually started to enjoy life again, feeling like I had found myself once more. One day, I was out having dinner with one of the new guys, laughing and talking, when I saw Gene approaching. His face was gloomy. There was a hint of sarcasm in his voice.“Wynn, you’re fast. Just a few days and you’ve moved on to another guy?”I rolled my eyes and replied bluntly, “It’s none of your business. We’ve broken up.”Gene noticed my cold attitude and adjusted his tone accordingly.“Forget the past. How about this, if you re

The victim’s family members at the scene seemed to find an outlet the moment they heard about my transfer. They sneered and taunted,“So now you’re transferring? Where were you before?“After all the fuss you caused, you still couldn’t give the victims peace. What were you even thinking?“Good, finally some sense. Get out of here, and don’t let me see you in the forensics department again!“From now on, we’ll rely entirely on Dr. Hans. I believe she can speak for more victims!”My colleagues chimed in too. Their voices dripped with disdain,“About time. With Yvette, the corpse whisperer, here, what do we even need her for?“If your skills aren’t up to it, don’t push it. Save yourself from embarrassing the police bureau.”Their sharp words hit me like arrows, but I did not bother responding.Gene watched everyone fawn over Yvette while looking at me with nothing but contempt. He felt embarrassed having me as his girlfriend and immediately announced he was breaking up with me.

The victim’s parents snatched the autopsy report right out of my hand and started comparing it line by line.A moment later, their faces twisted with rage. They exploded at me,“Are you kidding me?! What is the point of you hacking up bodies every day? Dr. Hans doesn’t even need to look, and she already knows the results!“The conclusions are the same, but you turned my daughter into pieces! She couldn’t even keep her body intact. Aren’t you afraid of karma?!“Get the hell out of here! Don’t make us have to look at you!”Before I could react, they lunged at me like wild animals, yanking my hair and slamming my head against the wall.If a colleague had not rushed in and stopped them, I might have been seriously hurt.Someone in the crowd, who could not stand to watch anymore, tried to calm them down,“Everyone, please, take it easy. Dr. Jaffe is just trying to find the truth…”Yet a furious parent cut him off instantly,“Easy? Our daughter is dead and can’t even rest in peace,
